BlackBerry App World Hits 3 Billion Downloads Posted: 06 Jul 2012 02:13 PM PDT
RIM launched BlackBerry App World a little over 3 years ago and it has grown steadily since. They just announced that they have served over 3 billion downloads from the official BlackBerry storefront. That does not include third party BlackBerry app stores and other sources and averages out to over 2.5 million downloads a day from App World. It took RIM 786 days to hit the first billion downloads and 210 to hit the second with this last billion taking 176 days. RIM also let out that there are now over 90,000 apps from over 28,000 App World vendors. Check out the details over at the BlackBerry DevBlog. I wonder when they will hit their next billion? I think they could get there faster if they added coupon/promo codes. (Pretty please?) If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Poynt files for Bankruptcy In Hopes of Continuing Posted: 06 Jul 2012 01:22 PM PDT
This is some sad news I really did not see coming. The hugely popular cross platform local search company Poynt has filed for bankruptcy in Calgary, Canada. According to the press release put out by Poynt they have filed a Notice of Intention under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency act which lets they stay creditors for 30 days as a judge decides if it should be extended. Poynt said that:
I really hope they find a way to carry on operations or at the very least sell to another company to carry the torch. I with them the best of luck and hope they pull through. via Marketwire via MobileSyrup If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Free Multi Copy – Paste App Combines Multiple Clipboard Items Posted: 06 Jul 2012 12:25 PM PDT
Jason let us know about another awesome free app from Amira Soft called Multi Copy – Paste. The app allows you to easily copy multiple items from different places and paste it all in one go. For people who find themselves copying multiple items into an email this is a godsend. The process has you:
It shows up in the menu as Multi Copy and then when you paste it pastes all the collected items. If you use the normal native Copy function it clears the buffer and starts the process over again. BlackBerry OS 7.1 Supports uPNP and BlackBerry 10 Will be DLNA Certified Posted: 06 Jul 2012 08:43 AM PDT Recent BlackBerry 7.1 OS releases have included a new Wireless Media Server feature that we have covered before. It allows you to share pictures, music, and video from your BlackBerry to other media devices over Wi-Fi. We also know that RIM has confirmed that BlackBerry 10 devices will be DLNA certified. I have tried explaining the difference a few times to readers but I think RIM has done a great job of it in their knowledge base. To boil it all down BlackBerry 7.1 devices make use of the uPNP standards and are not DLNA certified. For a device to be DLNA certified it needs to support both uPNP and DLNA though many of you have discovered that DLNA devices work just fine with the uPNP BlackBerry 7.1 media server. Still it will be nice when RIM adds DLNA support to BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook. I am really hoping they add DLNA control along with streaming. Check out the details on the BlackBerry 7.1 Wireless Media Server and uPNP vs DLNA at BlackBerry.com If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Sponsoring EcoCAR 2 Challenge To Make Greener Car with QNX Posted: 06 Jul 2012 08:09 AM PDT QNX shared on their auto blog that RIM & QNX are sponsoring a program called EcoCAR 2 this year. The EcoCAR 2 program challenges 15 North American Universities to "create a greener car without compromising performance, safety, and consumer acceptibility." This is part of the US Department of Energy and General Motors program to advance vehicle efficiency and RIM is enabling students this year with QNX. They are giving these students and university researchers full access to RIM's top of the line QNX CAR app platform for their systems in this three year program. This year is the first year of the program and I am curious to see what the universities come up with. Check out more details on the QNX Auto blog along with the EcoCAR 2 program website and Facebook page. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Rumored to Be Feeling Pressure from Carriers to Lower Service Fee Posted: 06 Jul 2012 06:54 AM PDT
RIM made it clear during their last earnings report that they are feeling "pressure to reduce RIM’s monthly infrastructure access fees." Now the FinancialPost is reporting that "there's definitely negotiations going on right now to reduce" according to one analyst which is sort of stating the obvious. These fees amount to about a third of RIM's current revenue and that same insightful analyst estimates that the revenue from these service fees could drop 17% to $3.4 billion this year and another 18% to $2.8 billion next year. Carriers and RIM declined to comment on the story which is another obvious move and RIM brilliantly responded that "RIM intends to continue generating a revenue stream from the services we offer." You have to love obvious analyst news… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Galazer Deluxe Arcade Game for BlackBerry Smartphones Posted: 06 Jul 2012 05:41 AM PDT I was surprised when Judah showed me Galazer Deluxe on his BlackBerry 9700. This arcade combat game is actually quite fun and works nicely on BlackBerry smartphones. It reminds me of vertical scrolling arcade shooter games from years ago with meteors, enemy spaceships, and more. Check out Galazer Deluxe for $1.99 in App World for most BlackBerry smartphones If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
