Nobex Radio Engineer Shares Thoughts On Cascades & BlackBerry 10 Posted: 18 Jul 2012 10:12 AM PDT Nobex Radio has long been one of the best streaming radio solutions for BlackBerry and many other platforms. That is why I found it very reassuring to read an editorial by Nobex Radio Chief Software Architect, Jamie Julius, on Cascades development for BlackBerry 10. When compared to traditional BlackBerry Java development it is stunning to hear a developer gushing about Cascades and its capabilities. This is definitely a tide RIM has turned with BlackBerry 10 and it gives me a good feeling about BlackBerry 10's success. If you are a developer thinking of creating native C++ apps for BlackBerry 10 then definitely check out Julius's writeup on the RIM DevBlog. Otherwise you can simply enjoy the screenshot of an early build of Nobex Radio running on BlackBerry 10. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry TK 3.0 Discovery Concept Phone Will Make you Drool Posted: 18 Jul 2012 10:03 AM PDT For some reason concept phones tend to make me have the same reaction as when I used to read popular science back in the day. I remember reading about how we would have flying cars by now but that is neither here or there. With that said the latest BlackBerry 10 design concept (This is not a real design!) by digitalhomeboy really caught my eye. He created a revision of his running line of BlackBerry concept phones. This one he dubs the BlackBerry TK 3.0 Discovery as a full touchscreen device. Definitely worth checking out if you want to drool about a possible future device… Check out all the details here or some more pictures below: Here is his previous concept side by side: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM’s CMO Frank Boulben Shares Sentiment in Another Interview Posted: 18 Jul 2012 09:46 AM PDT RIM's new CMO, Frank Boulben, has been doing a decent job of making the rounds and sharing his vision for BlackBerry 10. His latest interview was with Engadget where he discusses what BlackBerry 10 means to RIM and what he is focusing on now that he is 5 weeks into the job. Also of interest is him agreeing with the sentiment that RIM needs fresh blood on their board along with sharing some of his background and what he brings to the table. Check out the full interview over at Engadget and let us know what you think of his responses! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

esDot PlayBook Photo Editing Apps On Sale Posted: 18 Jul 2012 09:26 AM PDT
esDot make some of the more popular photo editing apps for the PlayBook. Their three offerings (TouchUp Pro, PicShop, and ColorUp Pro) are on sale until tomorrow. These are some pretty solid editors but the differences between them are a bit confusion so I recommend doing some research:
Check out all three deals on this page in App World and let us know if you pick one up! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

AT&T Announces New Shared Data Plans Starting in August Posted: 18 Jul 2012 07:41 AM PDT
After Verizon rolled out their shared data plans it was a given that AT&T would shortly follow. AT&T confirmed that they were coming and now they have officially announced the details for AT&T Mobile Share plans. The one key difference from Verizon is that AT&T is not replacing their existing data plans which remain available and users are not required to change plans to upgrade their devices. Essentially the new plans start offering data at $40 for 1GB a month plus $45 per smartphone and up along with unlimited voice and text messages. Things go up all the way to $200 for 20GB of data plus $30 per smartphone. The nice part is that additional feature phones can be added for $30 a month along with laptops costing $20 and tablets going for $10 per device. Check out the details in the press release below: AT&T GIVES CUSTOMERS MORE CHOICE WITH NEW SHARED WIRELESS DATA PLANS New Mobile Share Plans Allow Customers to Easily Share Data Across Smartphones, Tablets and Other Devices New and Current Customers Not Required To Choose or Switch to Shared Plans DALLAS, JULY 18, 2012 — AT&T* customers will soon have more options in choosing the plan that's right for them and their mobile devices. With new AT&T Mobile Share plans, available in late August, new and existing customers can share a single bucket of data across smartphones, tablets, and other compatible devices, plus get unlimited talk and text. AT&T Mobile Share plans make it easy for customers to manage their data, voice minutes and texting, without needing to keep track of multiple plans. Customers can select one of the new shared data plans or choose one of AT&T's existing individual or family plans. Current customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. There are no changes to AT&T's device upgrade policy, which means customers eligible to upgrade to AT&T's best device price are not required to switch plans. The new plans will also be available for business customers. With AT&T Mobile Share plans, customers start by choosing how much data they want each month, then choose up to 10 devices to attach to their shared plan, one of which must be a smartphone. Each plan includes tethering and unlimited domestic calls and texts for smartphones and basic or quick messaging phones. The larger the data bucket you choose, the less you pay per gigabyte and the less you pay for each smartphone added to the shared plan.
AT&T Mobile Share allows customers to essentially build a plan to fit their devices and usage. Customers who are more data-centric can choose a larger data bucket. Customers who typically use more voice than data can add multiple smartphones and basic phones and opt for a smaller data bucket. "We offer customers a broad choice and the best lineup of plans, now enhanced by Mobile Share," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility. "With these new plans, the more you share, the more you save. They'll be a good fit for a variety of new and existing customers. But if customers want to stay on their current plan or choose from our existing plans, they can do that, too. It's their choice. "Today we think of people's smartphones and tablets sharing a bucket of data. But in the future we'll see health care monitors, connected cars, security systems and other devices in the home all connected to the mobile Internet," said Christopher. "Our Mobile Share plans are simple, easy and a great value for individuals or families with multiple mobile Internet devices." Mobile Share plans give customers more control over how, where and on what device they use data — which has become more important as people use more data devices. You can choose to use more of your data bucket on your tablet, for example, or tap into your data bucket only when needed for devices you use occassionally. And by consolidating data plans, you can take advantage of any data you currently have unused each month by efficiently sharing it across devices. "The 'more you share, the more you save' concept is one that will resonate well with customers because of the value provided through the Mobile Share data plans themselves and in smartphone connection fees," said Roger Entner, Founder and Lead Analyst of Recon Analytics. "AT&T also is providing its customers with flexibility and choice by keeping its existing data plans and not requiring customers to move to Mobile Share unless they want to. It's a win-win for both AT&T and its customers." To help customers track their data usage, AT&T keeps users informed with courtesy alerts as they near their data allowance for the month. Also, customers can check their usage at anytime online, through the myAT&T mobile app, or by calling *DATA# from their mobile phone. Each data plan also includes access to more than 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots — the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** among wireless carriers — at no additional charge. Wi-Fi usage at public hotspots, home or office does not count toward the monthly wireless data plan usage. Customers can learn more about the new plans and determine which plan is best for them at www.att.com/mobileshare. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Devs: RIM Updates App World Vendor Agreement & Merchant of Record Posted: 18 Jul 2012 07:03 AM PDT RIM has sent out an update to their previously revised App World Vendor agreement that clarifies some of the issues vendors had with the previous addendum and clarifies others. First of all RIM no longer requires all payments inside apps to go through App World's Payment Service for in app payments. On the other hand RIM has clarified their requirement to be paid "Secondary Revenue Fees" of 30% for all transactions that happen outside of App World and don't go through the Payment Service. Here are the highlights RIM pointed out:
If you are a vendor I HIGHLY recommend reading the full documents and checking out all the changes. You can find them below:

Free Minimal HTTP Web Server For Your PlayBook Posted: 18 Jul 2012 06:55 AM PDT Now this is a concept that I can see going places on the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. Jason Ernst has released a very minimalist HTTP Web Server app for the PlayBook that lets you serve HTML pages or files from your PlayBook. For now it serves out the files in your Share/Documents folder on port 8080 and does not allow you to change the port or put any security on the page. For now this may be useful for quickly sharing a file with a friend on the local network or doing some quick HTML design. Once you fire up the app the documents can be access from another pc by going to http://your.playbooks.ip.address:8080. Check out Web Server free in App World. Hopefully Jason keeps on updating this one! (ImgCredit) If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Launches BlackBerry Jam Developer Rewards & Badges Posted: 18 Jul 2012 05:43 AM PDT This week RIM sent me an email saying that I unlocked the BlackBerry 10 Jam badge for attending the first annual BlackBerry 10 Jam event in Orlando. I logged into the new BlackBerry Developer Zone and there in the top right corner I redeemed my badge and noticed a bunch of new badges that I had achieved or could achieve (I have 5 of the 17). Better yet RIM had awarded me 610 BlackBerry Developer Zone Rewards Points that I could redeem for BlackBerry swag. I immediately ordered a BlackBerry Jam hoodie for 500 points with many more goodies to win. You can redeem the points for everything from a messenger bag to a free pass to BlackBerry World or other events. If you are a developer I highly recommend checking out the new Developer Zone rewards area and seeing what you can achieve. Kudos to the RIM team for following up on their promise to reward developers for their engagement in the community! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
