More news on whats ahead for RIM and us….

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 02:23 AM PST

RIM’s CES focus seemed to touch a little bit on BB10 and a lot on PlayBook 2.0.  I know that many of us were expecting a bit more in the way of whats to come for the company we all want to see succeed.  Well N4BB just posted a rumoured roadmap for 2012.  Most of it has already been mentioned or spoken about, but its good for affirmation.

Here are the upcoming highlights of 2012:

  • 7″ PlayBook releasing in April 2012, will be 3G+ (will not be LTE due to chipset)
  • First BlackBerry 10 phone releasing in September 2012
  • PlayBook OS 2.0 releasing end of February 2012
  • Mobile Fusion releasing in April 2012

Dingleberry v3.0 Launches for Windows & Mac With Downgrader & Hulu Enabler

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 02:21 PM PST

Dingleberry

The Dingleberry team has just dropped v3.0 of their PlayBook root exploit tool. This one has a built in downgrader which should downgrade your PlayBook to a Dingleberry rootable version and also has a Hulu enabler to watch Hulu. It is also now available for both Windows and Mac so everybody can get in on it.

As long as RIM does not stop PlayBooks from being downgradeable then it seems like the Dingleberry will persist. Those of you brave of heart can "pick" the latest Dingleberry at www.dingleberry.it

Thanks "S" for the tip!

Latest WTF Survey: iOS Users Optimistic & BlackBerry Users Pessimistic

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 01:09 PM PST

 cats lightning

In this latest round of WTF survey of the month we have another case of Mark Twain's "Lies, Damn Lies, and statistics." Gazelle is a company that offers users money for their old unwanted electronic devices.  In their CES revelry they surveyed an unspecified number of CES attendees in what seems to be an unscientific process based on them being iOS, Android, or BlackBerry users and their outlook on life. iOS users statistically were shown as optimistic, calm, and social. Android users were found to be optimistic and active and BlackBerry users were found to be pessimistic and uneasy about their future.

The results are quite entertaining and can be found below and in their press release:

iPhone and iPad users are optimistic, calm and also social

  • In uncertain times, 29% of iPhone users and 60% of iPad users expect the best
  • 52% of iPhone users and 58% of iPad users are always optimistic about their future
  • 25% of iPhone users and 26% of iPad users don’t get upset too easily
  • 65% of iPhone users and 52% of iPad users enjoy their friends a lot

Android users are generally optimistic and active

  • 28% of Android smartphone users and 36% of Android tablet users are always optimistic about their future
  • 48% of Android smartphone users and 64% of Android tablet users think it’s important to keep busy
  • 31% of Android smartphone users and 55% of Android tablet users often expect more good things to happen than bad
  • 18% of Android smartphone users and 27% of Android tablet users don’t get upset too easily

BlackBerry users are pessimistic and uneasy about their future

  • 33% of BlackBerry users believe if something can go wrong for them, it will
  • 33% of BlackBerry users rarely count on good things happening to them
  • 16% of BlackBerry users hardly ever expect things to go their way
  • 0% of BlackBerry users usually expect the best

As I mentioned above the results are interesting and may lead to some insight into what sort of users use each device. The thing is these surveys are entertaining examples of how statistics can say whatever you want. If you need a refresher course check out this infographic on causation compared to correlation. Or better yet we have the entertaining graph below by Aly Juma correlating highway accidents to the importation of fresh lemons from Mexico:

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 09:11 AM PST

App World Update

Usually we wouldn't mention such a small update but all of you are going to get the notification soon. Terrence let us know that RIM has pushed out BlackBerry App World v3.1.0.60 for BlackBerry smartphones. This issue fixes a "Reinstall bug some users were experiencing." I am hoping that means they fixed the bug where you had issues reinstalling an app after uninstalling it.

Either way now you know and knowing is half… a reboot :) Check it out here

Pakistan Now Asking RIM for “Memogate” Information

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 07:53 AM PST

surveillance-webcam

If you have been following the news you may have heard that RIM has been pulled into the "memogate" scandal in Pakistan. The Pakistani commission investigating a memo that was supposedly sent to the US government requesting "direct intervention from the US in combating the (Pakistani) military, which it claimed was plotting to bring down the civilian apparatus." according to Information-Age. RIM has supposedly refused to offer this information (via HindustanTimes) for some reason though they usually do provide it if there is a lawful request through the court systems. Supposedly RIM is saying that they "do not provide such data to a third party" and "does not store some of the data that was being sought by the commission such as SMS messages and email.

What makes this even more interesting is that some tech companies and Symantec are claiming that a previously leaked memo suggesting the Indian government was given access to BlackBerry, Nokia, and Apple systems was fake. There is no real proof either way but this does all boil back down to what RIM has been saying over and over and repeated to the Guardian:

RIM told the Guardian that it has stuck to its core principles. "RIM maintains a consistent global standard for lawful access requirements that does not include special deals for specific countries," a spokesman said, adding that it makes no changes to the security architecture for BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers.

"Contrary to any rumours, the security architecture is the same around the world and RIM truly has no ability to provide its customers’ encryption keys. Also driving RIM’s position is the fact that strong encryption is a fundamental commercial requirement for any country to attract and maintain international business anyway and similarly strong encryption is currently used pervasively in traditional VPNs on both wired and wireless networks in order to protect corporate and government communications."

EA Director Talks PlayBook Game Development & Another Look at QNX Porsche

 EA Games Plants vs Zombies

EA has been working close with RIM to leak some sweet game development on the BlackBerry PlayBook. They sat down with Eric Wood, Director OEM & New Platforms (EA Interactive) at Electronic Arts, at CES and talked to him about game development on the PlayBook. It is very interesting to hear what he has to say especially with their headlining games still coming like Plants vs. Zombies which is shown off in the video.

A Bit of Explanation of PlayBook Native Email & the BlackBerry NOC

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:30 AM PST

PlayBook Native Email

While down at CES Kevin @CrackBerry got Michael Clewley, from RIM's PlayBook team, to detail a bit more of how exactly native email on the PlayBook works. As we know it mostly uses the ActiveSync technology which does not go through RIM's NOC usually. It is interesting to see how RIM sees the future of RIM's differentiating NOC (Network Operations Center) with QNX, BB10, and the PlayBook. Check out the video explanation below:

@CrackBerry also scored some nice video of the PlayBook Video Chat in v2.0. Nothing crazy different like a PC client but definitely improved with things like presence control:

Zinio Shows Off PlayBook Magazine App on Video – Coming Soon?

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 05:45 AM PST

Zinio PlayBook

Zinio and RIM keep on teasing me with their magazine reader app for the BlackBerry PlayBook. We first saw signs of their Adobe AIR powered magazine app coming to the PlayBook in March of last year then a preview video in June and once again this month in their CES announcement for the PlayBook 2.0 OS. Now we have clear video of the Zinio app running on the PlayBook thanks to Zinio and RIM at CES.

RIM posted up a video of them sitting down with Zinio's Chief Marketing Officer, Jeanniey, during CES. They don't really confirm when the app is coming but they do tell you to sign up to register your interest at www.zinio.com/playbook along with readers getting a $25 credit towards Zinio content when the app is available!
