More (Limited) Hands On Impressions of BlackBerry 10 Devices

Our friends over at CrackBerry have gotten some time with RIM's upcoming BlackBerry 10 QWERTY and touchscreen devices and posted the limited details they could. Obviously there is more they were not allowed to say but it does give us a few more details to pine over. They confirmed MicroUSB, MicroHDMI, MicroSIM, and hinted towards possibly having a MicroSD slot but there is no confirmation on that. They are also loving the BlackBerry 10 software though they could not say much new about it.

I highly recommend checking out their impressions that Kevin wrote up. Let us know what you think in the comments!

How to Take a Screenshot of your BlackBerry from Mac OSX Terminal

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 03:07 PM PDT

Desktop Manager Mac

You have been able to take screenshots from your BlackBerry Smartphone using your PC for ages now with the help of JavaLoader. I knew it was possible to do the same with the Desktop Manager for Mac but I never did find good documentation for it. Turns out RIM has provided just that to make it easy to take screenshots from your Apple Mac if you have Desktop Manager installed. Here are the instructions

To take a screenshot of the active display on a BlackBerry® smartphone, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the Macintosh computer using a USB cable
  2. Open Terminal
  3. Type: cd /Applications/BlackBerry\ Desktop\ Software.app/Contents/MacOS/
  4. Type: ./bbdm screenshot active ~/Desktop/screenshot.png

Note: If the BlackBerry smartphone has a password, type ./bbdm -password <password>, where<password> is the password which is set on the BlackBerry smartphone.
By default, the screenshot is saved on the desktop named screenshot.png

MessagesToCalendar Saves Incoming and Outgoing Email to Your Calendar

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 12:58 PM PDT

MessagesToCalendar MessagesToCalendar2

ToySoft let us know about one of their newer creations called MessagesToCalendar. The app performs the interesting function of logging your incoming and outgoing email and PIN messages to the calendar sort of like a journal. While I don't know why you would want to log all email the app does allow you to set it up to only log specific contacts or senders. For example, you can use it to log all email from and to your boss or clients on the calendar. The To and From fields are saved along with the body of the email in the notes field though not the attachments.

Features include:

  • Supports BIS and BES email accounts
  • Save both incoming and outgoing email and PIN messages
  • Setup Contact Category filtering
  • Setup email and PIN filtering
  • Disable and Enable MessagesToCalendar
  • Runs in the background and do not need any user intervention
  • Quick and easy to setup
  • When you sync with the Desktop all your messages will be synced too
  • A better way to backup your email and PIN messages
  • A better way to view your daily activity from the Calendar in Agenda view

Check out MessagesToCalendar for $1.99 in App World

BlackBerry PlayBook Travel & Rapid Charger Drop in Price @Amazon

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 08:08 AM PDT

Travel Charger Rapid Charger

After I picked up the J-M1 dual battery charger yesterday I was looking for a second charger for my PlayBook for the office. Turns out those accessories have also dropped in price with the original folding blade travel charger that ships with the PlayBook selling for about $16 shipped on Amazon. For those of you who need the absolute fastest charge they have also dropped the price of the rapid travel charger from the retail $69.99 to only $36. For another $27 you can also marry that to a rapid charging stand for your desk. I also picked up an OEM leather sleeve for my PlayBook for another $13.

Let me know if you spot any other solid deals or price drops on BlackBerry accessories!

BlackBerry ID Login Coming to Developer JamZone, Forums, & Issue Tracker

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 05:43 AM PDT

BlackBerry ID Login

RIM is moving closer towards my dream of one login to rule them all. Earlier this week we told you that RIM was making the BlackBerry Beta Zone use your BlackBerry ID as a login instead of a separate login. Now they are taking that message to the BlackBerry JamZone for developers. That also includes the JamZone Rewards system, Issue Tracker, and Lithium developer forums. As far as I can tell that will also mean the forum logins on the official BlackBerry forums will also use the BlackBerry ID system.

This change is planned to happen in the next few weeks. I am really liking that RIM is finally taking action on this one but it makes me wonder what took so long. :) Check out the details on the BlackBerry DevBlog.
