More BlackBerry 10 Hands On Photos

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 08:32 PM PDT

CrackBerry plays with BlackBerry 10If you been waiting to see more pictures of BB 10 check out the new pictures the guys over at CrackBerry posted earlier today. Note this is only the UI, not what the final hardware we will see for BlackBerry 10. The pictures give you a nice preview of the notifications and how the new OS flows from one app to the other.  I haven't had the pleasure to play with the BB 10 OS, but I am sure impressed at what I've seen so far.  If RIM has just began to show the main features in the new OS I can't wait to see what other goodies they  have yet to showcase. It is exciting to see how much RIM has been able to do since they acquired QNX, lets just hope they can do a solid launch with BB 10.

PaceMaker Lite Version Only $4.99 – Tutorials Also Available

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 12:07 PM PDT

PaceMaker

We told you earlier today that PaceMaker had launched their awesome DJ Music Mixing app. The only catch was the full version cost you $19.99 which is a bit pricey. Ashley pointed out in the comments that there is a Lite version of PaceMaker that is only $4.99 with a slightly smaller feature set. I am not sure exactly how to differentiate the two but hopefully somebody with more music talent than me can help us out. PaceMaker has also posted a few tutorials on how to use the PaceMaker app on their website which is definitely worth checking out.

Check out PaceMaker Lite in App World for $4.99 or the full version for $19.99

RIM Paying Mike Lazaridis & Jim Balsille $12 Million in Exit Package

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 11:42 AM PDT

Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie Years Ago Thorsten Heins RIM

It was just this past December when Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsille cut their pay to a symbolic $1. Now the Globe & Mail is reporting that both of them are receiving an exit package that is worth a combined $12 million. That is not bad when it comes to golden parachutes. Lazaridis remains as vice chair of the board with a dedicated office, company car and driver, along with $3.9 million in compensation. Balsillie is no longer on the board and is getting entitlements of a combined 7.9 million. They also note that Thorsten Heins had an executive pay of $1.9 million which was raised to $10.2 million for 2012 now that he is CEO. His contract also state that if he is fired "Without cause or good reason" he is entitled to 24 months of pay at his salary.

RIM also stated that one of their directors, Antonio Viana-Baptista, is not standing for reelection when RIM holds them shortly. They have put forth Goldman Sachs managing director Timothy Dattels, who has experience in Asia as their candidate.

Not much of this has anything to do with getting BlackBerry 10 to us sooner but it is interesting.

Verizon To Force You Off Unlimited Plans for Subsidized Phones

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 10:47 AM PDT

Verizon Shared Everything

We told you yesterday about Verizon's new Shared Everything plans. Since then more details have come out and as usual with carriers the details are in the fine print. First of all Verizon is "graciously" allowing customers with unlimited data plans to keep them. The catch is that if they want to buy a new phone with a subsidy they will lose their unlimited data plan. The only option for keeping your unlimited data plan is to buy devices outright with no subsidy (think $650 to $750) but even that is temporary.

The other huge catch for companies is that Verizon still plans on charging a $15 extra per device tax for corporate email access. That means BlackBerry Enterprise Server along with Good Messaging and any other secure email solution though it is no longer required for ActiveSync.

Frank pointed out to me that Verizon has even been kind enough to put out a very descriptive PDF of how exactly these plans break out in addition to their calculator. In short expect to be paying $10-$50 for a gigabyte of data on Verizon if you want to get a subsidized BlackBerry 10 device in the future…

Nokia (Mostly) Acquires Scalado Tech Behind BlackBerry 10 Camera

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 07:23 AM PDT

 Keynote camera BlackBerry 10

While at BlackBerry World 2012 we were very impressed with RIM's demo of one of the features of the BlackBerry 10 Camera. It allows you to rewind certain frames of a picture to get everyone smiling and was based on technology from Scalado. Now Nokia has announced that they have acquired Scalado though not in an outright acquisition. They have acquired their developers, technologies, and IP portfolio according to Engadget but not the whole company. They think this is because Scalado has outstanding obligations to RIM, HTC, and others.

I am not sure how much of a difference this will make since this is just one feature of many in BlackBerry 10 and not a whole key program but still it is a noteworthy development. It also makes me wonder what RIM's agreement with Scalado entitles them to.

Thanks @pb_and_jam for the tip!

BlackBerry 10 Theme Coming for jQuery Mobile Thanks to RIM Devs

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 06:50 AM PDT

Jquery Mobile Github

RIM has seen the light when it comes to web technology and HTML5 and they are chasing after it full force with contributions to projects like PhoneGap, WebKit, and more. They announced on their DevBlog that one of their own developers, Jason Scott (@JsonScott), has been made an official committer to the jQuery Mobile project. His main responsibility will be to ensure the jQuery Mobile experience on BlackBerry is the best possible and other general fixes.

What is even more interesting is a project coming from Jason and his team. They announced that his team will be releasing a theme for jQuery Mobile to give it the BlackBerry 10 look and feel. They do not indicate if this will be based off their work from BBUI.js but if so it should look very nice! Keep up the good work!
