BlackBerry Bridge to Allow Media Card AND Internet Browsing!

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:47 PM PDT

BlackBerry Bridge Description2 BlackBerry Bridge Description

I mentioned in my last article that the BlackBerry Bridge would allow you to browse the internet and now have confirmation of that fact. The BlackBerry Bridge description in App World clearly states that the Bridge will allow you to browse the internet through the app. It will even allow you to access your companies Intranet if you are on a BES and your BES admin has allowed for it. On top of that they have confirmed that it will allow you to access files on your BlackBerry smartphone from your PlayBook but I am not sure about the other way around.

BlackBerry Bridge, you can connect your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to your BlackBerry smartphone to access email, calendars, and more. From your tablet, you can connect to files stored on a media card and browse the Internet using your wireless connection.  If your smartphone uses a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and Intranet browsing is enabled by your IT administrator, you can also browse your organization's intranet.

Still don't believe me that the BlackBerry Bridge is one of the best features of the BlackBerry PlayBook? RIM has some more surprises coming and I cannot wait to get my hands on the BlackBerry Bridge from my Torch!

BlackBerry Bridge IS One of the BEST PlayBook Features! Here is Why!

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 03:37 PM PDT

IMG_00000133

There are a few things that have not been stressed about the BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge that I feel need to be addressed. The BlackBerry Bridge allows you to connect your BlackBerry PlayBook to your BlackBerry Smartphone (with a Bridge app installed) to access information from it. Until now we have known this will give us access to the BlackBerrys Messages, Contacts, Calendar, BlackBerry Messenger, Tasks, and Memos. Keep in mind it does all of this through the connection to the BlackBerry and is NOT considered tethering. The thing is there is one feature missing off that list that I think is a real game changer for RIM.

I have confirmed at the BlackBerry PlayBook launch event yesterday that the BlackBerry Bridge will also allow users to browse the web! Through the BlackBerry Bridge users will be able to browse both Internet (BIS) and Intranet (BES) websites through the connection to their BlackBerry smartphone. This traffic will be piped to the RIM NOC APN directly just like BlackBerry smartphone traffic. That means you will be able to browse the web without a tethering data plan!

Essentially this boils down to the fact that with the BlackBerry Bridge and a BlackBerry Smartphone you will be able to perform all the following functions without tethering:

  1. Read and respond to your email
  2. Place a new calendar entry and have it synched to BES or Gmail/Yahoo
  3. Chat with friends on BBM
  4. And last but not least browse the web

The only thing really missing off the list is the ability to use applications and allow them to connect through that Bridge. I am not sure if that will happen but something tells me it will because RIM needs a way to pipe internal BES protected data to a PlayBook and this would be an easy route for that.

Currently I have not managed to get BlackBerry Bridge on my BlackBerry Torch but a good source confirmed that this is the case. RIM has not been releasing the BlackBerry smartphone app required for the Bridge since it is still a work in progress but this is a HUGE development.

Think about it. Name one tablet or even laptop that can do all 4 of those things without a tethering or tablet data plan?

HOT! WebKit Web Inspector on the BlackBerry PlayBook for Web Developers!!!

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 01:03 PM PDT

IMG_00000130

I have been begging RIM to release some form of WebKits Web Inspector for web developers since they released BlackBerry 6 with the Torch WebKit browser. It looks like they are finally listening with the BlackBerry PlayBook. I was sifting through the options in the browsers menu and ran across an option to "Enable Web Inspector." You need to have a password set on your device to be able to enable this for some reason and it does tell you that your web browsing is no longer secure while having it on.

Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 3.43.52 PM Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 3.44.01 PM

You probably don't know what Web Inspector is if you are not a Web Developer. Web Inspector is similar to FireBug for Firefox and allows users to easily delve into the components that make up a website. For example, in Chrome and Safari it allows you to dig into the HTML, CSS, loading times, resources, JavaScript error console, and more to improve performance and debug website errors. See how that could be useful?

Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 3.44.33 PM Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 3.44.53 PM

RIM implemented this feature on the BlackBerry PlayBook by allowing you to access the Web Inspector console by going to your devices IP address from any other PC on the network on port 1337. For example, http://192.168.0.117:1337. You then select the page you want to inspect that you have opened since turning on Web Inspector. The coolest thing is that the data is live. You can also Audit the performance of an application and it will give you suggestions on how to improve it!

Screen shot 2011-04-15 at 3.21.49 PM

The CRAZY part is so many of the features are there! You have access to the tabs for:

  • Elements
  • Resources
  • Scripts
  • Timeline
  • Profiles,
  • Storage
  • Audits
  • and Console

This is going to be HUGE for web developers on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I am going to dig into it further and report back! I had to wait a long time for it to load the first time but it works!

Tell me this is not the coolest feature ever for Web Developers on the BlackBerry PlayBook! I am loving the BlackBerry Torch team today. (I am guessing our thanks goes to Matthew and his team!)

Here are screenshots of how you turn it on:

IMG_00000123 IMG_00000124 IMG_00000125 IMG_00000126

AND to top it all off it gets even better. You can actually use Web Inspector from the BlackBerry PlayBook browser in another tab!!!

Jim Balsillie: Native Email For PlayBook Coming in 60 days

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 12:10 PM PDT

I think this CO-CEO tag-team setup is working quite nicely for RIM. Mike Lazardis recently walked out of an interview after being asked about security concerns in India and the Middle East.

Jim Balsillie tagged in, and sat down with WSJ's Julia Angwin to talk about the PlayBook AND coincidentally, to clear up concerns about the questions Lazardis was unwilling to answer.

When asked about the lack of native email client on the PlayBook,  Balsillie replied, "We will have, if you want, a standalone non-web, non-paired email client on it within the next, I believe it was 60 days scheduled." He also said that the Android app player will be coming "sometime this summer."

I'm not sure Angwin was the best choice for an interviewer here as she seemed to have no follow up questions after asking about Walt Mossberg's opinions. On the other hand, she plays the uninformed consumer role quite nicely.

If you have 17 minutes to spare, check out the video below and let us know what you think!

Thanks for the tip LaoWang!

Over the past few months I have seen and played with quite a few builds of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS. Over time RIM has added more options, changed the wording around, and more so I thought I would give you screenshots of every option in the BlackBerry PlayBook settings menu. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Quite a few readers asked me to post up pictures of the demo Mike Lazaridis gave David and I. David had his trusty SLR ready to snap some shots along with pictures of the BlackBerry PlayBook Punch many of us were drinking. (Does that mean we were drinking the Kool-Aid?) Mike was showing off his two favorite features on the BlackBerry PlayBook along with highlighting an awesome 1080p video that he called a "Red Video" which I cannot seem to find… All in all a sweet interview and it was awesome to see him that revved up and excited about the device and its potential.

Screenshot Feature Built Into BlackBerry PlayBook!

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:20 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Music Controls

While at the BlackBerry PlayBook launch event last night I got a nice demo of the BlackBerry PlayBook from Mike Lazaridis. He pointed out a feature to me that is so critical yet I have not found it documented anywhere. It turns out that the BlackBerry PlayBook has a built in feature along with a key combination to take a screenshot of the screen. It truly is such a cool feature to have baked right into the OS and I absolutely LOVE IT! I can easily take screenshots and then use the Wi-Fi file sharing to get them on my PC.

All you have to do to take a screenshot on the BlackBerry PlayBook is follow these very complex steps:

  1. Hold down the "Previous Track" and "Next Track" buttons at the same time

Your screenshot will end up in the BlackBerry PlayBook Camera folder that you can access through the Pictures app. The only downside is there is no easy way to send them out to Twitter or email but hopefully RIM or an enterprising dev will do that for us soon! I have to say its a slick feature and makes reviews much easier!!!

BlackBerry PlayBook: Meebo Browser IM Client, 7Digital Store, YouTube App

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

IMG_00000089 IMG_00000074

Quite a few people have been writing in asking if there is a Google Talk client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. So far I have not found one but I am sure there will be one soon. Until then I tried out the very popular Meebo website which lets you connect to practically every instant messenger network from your browser. It works well but expects you to have a mouse to do things like expand windows. The downside of using the browser is that if you switch to another tab that browser window in the background is frozen (for now). Hopefully we can convince them to create a PlayBook app! Also in this roundup: screenshots of the 7Digital music store that ships with the PlayBook and a YouTube app that gives you faster access to videos you could access through the browser. :)

Mike Lazaridis Two Favorite BlackBerry PlayBook Features

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:13 AM PDT

IMG_00000020 IMG_00000012

While at the BlackBerry PlayBook launch party tonight I was honored to have Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO @ RIM, give me a demo of the BlackBerry PlayBook. (pictures of that coming soon) I happened to ask him what his two favorite BlackBerry PlayBook features were and I thought I would share his response. I personally have a different favorite feature but I will go more into that later.

Mike Lazaridis favorite BlackBerry PlayBook features are:

  • BlackBerry PlayBook HDMI mirroring and splitting mode – This allows users to have one application open on the BlackBerry PlayBook screen and another on an HDMI screen. Mike pointed out to me that this is awesome for PowerPoint slides allowing users to easily present from their BlackBerry PlayBook without a laptop. I have to admit its a pretty slick feature! I just wish RIM gave me a mini-HDMI cable to show it off!
  • Full HD Video Streaming – Mike was showing off an awesome video of 1080p playing on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I wish I could find the video again but it was awesome. Instead I decided to take some screenshots of the Matrix shooting scene to get the same idea. It blows my mind that the PlayBook handles this so well. My 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo desktop chokes on 1080p streaming YouTube videos so this is very impressive!

More to come!
