Posted: 08 Nov 2011 02:50 AM PST

 Chess Battle Chess Battle2

I missed his when it launched last month but Polarbit has brought their slick Chess: Battle of the Elements game to the BlackBerry PlayBook. This game offers up the classic Chess experience with 3D graphics thrown in for a nice experience. It has an adjustable difficultly level along with letting you play the computer or a friend. They also have some chess puzzles thrown in for fun. This is by far the best chess game I have seen for the PlayBook so far and really shines on the device.

You can pick up Chess: Battle of the Elements for your PlayBook for $1.99 in App World. They do have a cross platform trailer that you can check out below:

Picasa Sync Lets You Auto Download Your Albums to your PlayBook

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:31 PM PST

PicasaSync 3 PicasaSync 5

One of our tipsters let us know about a relatively new PlayBook app called Picasa Sync. The app simply lets you bring the pictures from your online Picasa web albums to your PlayBook. The developer, Daniel Bigham, always wanted to show of his pictures from his PlayBook but never remembered to load them on the device. He created Picasa Sync to keep his PlayBook pics up to date. Sadly it does not have the ability to upload your PlayBook photos back to Picasa but hopefully he is working on that! :)

PicasaSync 1 PicasaSync 2

The app lets you get the apps that you have on Picasa onto your PlayBook wirelessly or simply only get the pictures you have starred in Picasa so its not downloading the gigabytes of Picasa pictures you have. In other words you can star the nice pictures you want on your PlayBook and have them sync.

Check out Picasa Sync in App World for a very reasonable $0.99

Bold 9900 and 9790

The latest leaked flyer from Rogers scored by MobileSyrup has the Canadian carrier working on two new BlackBerry launches. Rogers released the Curve 9360 last and now we have a flyer showing them working on releasing a white version of the Bold 9900 along with the so far unreleased and unannounced Bold 9790. Personally I am hearing good things about the 9790 and want to check it out for myself.

What do you guys think?

RIM Official Statement on Today’s Outage Caused by “Global Internet Issue”

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 11:14 AM PST

Switchyard 4

It looks like those issues many users were experiencing this morning may have nothing to do with RIM's infrastructure or BIS NOCs. From what RIM is saying and other reports the issue seems to stem from ISP's up and down stream from RIM beyond RIM's networks. Here is their official statement:

November 7, 2011 – There was a global Internet issue this morning that impacted a number of Internet Service Providers (ISP) around the world. RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure was not impacted however, some customers may have experienced delays with their ISP. RIM continues to monitor the situation.

So are you still experiencing issues or is all well?

Is Twitter Working on Your BlackBerry? Let Us Know…

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 08:28 AM PST

Twitter out

An issue has been cropping up on quite a few BlackBerrys with Twitter. Dan Levy up in Canada first pointed out to us that Twitter for BlackBerry and UberSocial have not been updating for the last hour or two. I checked on my device and Twitter for BlackBerry also is not updating for me along with a few other members on the BerryReview team around the US and Canada. So I thought I would throw the question out there. Anybody else having issues with Twitter or UberSocial or any other apps?

PS: the @Support account for Twitter does not seem to have any issues outstanding.

A Little Explanation of How LocalBar Works to Locally Install Bar Files

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 06:10 AM PST

LocalBar4

In case you have been playing with LocalBar on your PlayBook all weekend you may be interested in this. Yohan, the developer of LocalBar, posted on his blog offering a bit of insight into how LocalBar works and what it does. In essence he is replicating the sideloading process from a PC by performing it using the PlayBook NDK to load apps from Localhost. This is a hack RIM could probably easily block by blocking sideloading from Localhost but I really hope they DO NOT decide to do that. If anything RIM should be promoting OTA downloads since that is the only way for Beta Testing and even their own Beta Zone concept to work on the PlayBook.

Here is how Yohan describes LocalBar:

  • I am using https://localhost method. To put it simply: it works like other desktop installers that connect via network or USB, it sends commands to an HTTP service in the playbook. The only difference is that it works through the playbook itself.
  • It is possible that in the future RIM may block requests from localhost
  • I don't have time to develop nice GUI for this, so I just use the basic GUI API that is accessible using NDK. For example: in the NDK there is a "login dialog" but no "password dialog", so for the password dialog I use the "login dialog" that shows the "user" field (which I don't need).
  • This works on OS 1.0.7 and on 2.0 (developer beta)
  • With this you can sort of OTA install through the playbook. From your PlayBook Just go to a website that has some bar files (for example this forum) , download it using the built in playbook browser, then run LocalBar to install the downloaded bar files.
