Best Buy Sold Out of BlackBerry PlayBooks – Shop BlackBerry Experiencing High Volume

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 03:43 AM PST

playbook_promo 199

We noted earlier today that Best Buy had stopped selling the BlackBerry PlayBook at the $199+ discount price and wondered what was going on. Customers complained of their orders being cancelled and some thought Best Buy was pulling the PlayBook from its store. Turns out there is a different much simpler reason. Best Buy put out the following statement about the PlayBook confirmed by RIM:

Starting Sunday, November 20th, Best Buy offered $300 instant savings to the BlackBerry PlayBook, reducing the price to $299.99 and $199.99 for the 32 GB and 16 GB, respectively. Customers have responded very positively to this short-term promotion available until Dec. 3 and, as a result, we are currently sold out of our inventory. We will have additional units available in the near future, at which time customers will be able to purchase the devices online at www.bestbuy.com.

The other interesting thing is that RIM's own Shop BlackBerry site has this message on their BlackBerry PlayBook page:

Notice to Customers: Due to high volume of PlayBook orders, orders may take up to 7 days to ship.

In other words it looks like the BlackBerry PlayBook market is growing fast!

New SSH Telnet & Rlogin Client Based on PuTTY for BlackBerry PlayBooks

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 12:55 AM PST

SSH Client SSH Client 2

I am really indebted to Dmytro Mishchenko right now. This week he released a new Telnet SSH client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This new client is based on PuTTY and supports the SSH, Telnet, and Rlogin protocols. This app is built on the work from PuTTY, qPuTTY, and the QT Library so it has a long legacy to build on. The SSH Client still has a way to go to be the perfect SSH client for the BlackBerry PlayBook but it definitely is the current best option for SSH on the PlayBook.

You can pick up SSH Client for the BlackBerry PlayBook for $1.99 in App World

RIM Announces BlackBerry Fusion Next Generation Multi Platform Enterprise Solution

Posted: 28 Nov 2011 09:40 PM PST

BlackBerry Fusion

I have been hearing rumors about RIM's next generation Enterprise Platform and the Fusion name for awhile now and it is finally official. RIM has announced BlackBerry Mobile Fusion which is their next generation enterprise mobility solution that builds off BES 5.0.3 and their Ubitexx acquisition. It will manage devices running BlackBerry, Google Android, and Apple iOS operating systems and will provide some much needed functionality. This includes BlackBerry PlayBook policies along with multiple devices per user. BlackBerry Fusion will provide:

  • Asset management
  • Configuration management
  • Security and policy definition and management
  • Secure and protect lost or stolen devices (remote lock, wipe)
  • User- and group-based administration
  • Multiple device per user capable
  • Application and software management
  • Connectivity management (Wi-Fi(R), VPN, certificate)
  • Centralized console
  • High scalability

This is a pretty big step for RIM and I am sure they will be covering it tomorrow in their webcast with it promised to be coming in 2012. For now you can check out the announcement below along with more info at www.blackberry.com/mobilefusion.

RIM Announces BlackBerry Mobile Fusion-The Next Generation Enterprise Mobility Solution for BlackBerry, Android and iOS Smartphones and Tablets

Simplifies Management of Smartphones and Tablets for Business and Government

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Nov. 29, 2011) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today introduced BlackBerry(R) Mobile Fusion – the Company’s next-generation enterprise mobility solution and RIM’s entry into the multi-platform Mobile Device Management (MDM) marketplace. Building on years of leading enterprise mobility management solutions from RIM, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will simplify the management of smartphones and tablets running BlackBerry(R), Google(R) Android(R) and Apple(R) iOS(R) operating systems.
"We are pleased to introduce BlackBerry Mobile Fusion – RIM’s next generation enterprise mobility solution – to make it easier for our business and government customers to manage the diversity of devices in their operations today," said Alan Panezic, Vice President, Enterprise Product Management and Marketing at Research In Motion. "BlackBerry Mobile Fusion brings together our industry-leading BlackBerry Enterprise Server technology for BlackBerry devices with mobile device management capabilities for iOS and Android devices, all managed from one web-based console. It provides the necessary management capabilities to allow IT departments to confidently oversee the use of both company-owned and employee-owned mobile devices within their organizations."
RIM is the leading provider of enterprise mobility solutions with over 90 percent of the Fortune 500 provisioning BlackBerry devices today. The enterprise market for smartphones and tablets continues to grow in both the company-provisioned and employee-owned (Bring Your Own Device or BYOD) categories. BYOD in particular has led to an increase in the diversity of mobile devices in use in the enterprise and new challenges for CIOs and IT departments as they struggle to manage and control wireless access to confidential company information on the corporate network. This has resulted in increased demand for mobile device management solutions.
BlackBerry Mobile Fusion brings together the market-leading BlackBerry(R) Enterprise Server (version 5.0.3) for BlackBerry smartphones; new management capabilities for BlackBerry PlayBook tablets built on BlackBerry Enterprise Server technology; and mobile device management for smartphones and tablets running Android and iOS operating systems.
BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will provide the following mobile device management capabilities for all supported mobile devices(i):

-- Asset management -- Configuration management -- Security and policy definition and management -- Secure and protect lost or stolen devices (remote lock, wipe) -- User- and group-based administration -- Multiple device per user capable -- Application and software management -- Connectivity management (Wi-Fi(R), VPN, certificate) -- Centralized console -- High scalability

BlackBerry smartphones will continue to benefit from the many advantages of the end-to-end BlackBerry solution including the same advanced IT management, security and control available with BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3, which is part of BlackBerry Mobile Fusion. These advanced features include BlackBerry(R) Balance(TM) technology supporting the use of a single device for both work and personal purposes without compromising the organization’s need to secure, manage and control confidential information; over 500 IT policies; over-the-air app and software installation and management; high availability; and much more. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion will also introduce new self-service functionality for employees to secure lost or stolen BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is currently in early beta testing with select enterprise customers. RIM is now accepting customer nominations for the closed beta program which will start in January, and general availability is expected in late March.

For more information, visit www.blackberry.com/mobilefusion.

(i) Device security, manageability and controls will continue to vary according to the inherent capabilities of the individual device operating systems.

Rooted BlackBerry PlayBook Shown Off On Video Showing Off Hulu

 DingleBerry Root Exploit

This keeps on getting better. It looks like the BlackBerry PlayBook root exploit we told you about before is real. The developers behind it, @xpvqs @cmwdotme @neuralic, have been hard at work hacking away at the BlackBerry PlayBook. Both Chris Wade and Neuralic have posted up videos showing off the exploit. See that screenshot above showing the UID 0? That means they have root (super user) access on the PlayBook. The first video shows the PlayBook root access from a PC and what that allows you to do. Supposedly that also allows you to load up Android Market on the Playbook OS 2.0 beta and directly install APK files without converting them into BAR files. In the second video Chris shows off Hulu working in the PlayBook browser which was most likely done by changing the user agent with root access.

RIM Employees Also Getting Slick Discount on BlackBerry PlayBooks

Posted: 28 Nov 2011 10:57 AM PST

BlackBerry PlayBook Case

I have been hearing about these discounts for awhile but Mackie let me know about a thread on RedFlagDeals Canada that really highlights it. RIM has been offering their employees BlackBerry PlayBooks for $99 (16GB), $149 (32GB), $199 (64GB). There is a catch that they have to pay benefit tax on it which brings up the price $30-$40 so its not that crazy of a deal. On the other hand RIM is throwing in extras for the 32GB and 64GB models like cases and HDMI cables.

Check out all the details here and try to hit up your friends at RIM if they owe you a favor… :)

UNO Star front Nova

Over the weekend Gokulesh let us know that Gameloft slashed the price on a few of their BlackBerry PlayBook games. From what he heard these price cuts are permanent price reductions which is pretty sweet. This sadly does not include all of Gameloft's PlayBook titles but it does include:

Indonesia BlackBerry Bold 9790 Launch Craziness Leads to Event Organizer Being Named as Suspect

Posted: 28 Nov 2011 06:39 AM PST

BlackBerry Indonesia Event

When I first heard of all the craziness that went on in Jakarta, Indonesia BlackBerry Bold 9790 launch I thought it sounded kind of sensationalist but it keeps on getting more interesting. In case you didn't hear RIM launched the BlackBerry Bold 9790 in Jakarta last week with a sale offering 50% off (about $250 sale price) for the first 1,000 people to purchase the device. This had people lining around the store from the day before. Originally organizers told those waiting that they would need a red bracelet from management to purchase the device but protestors rioted when they realized that the store was no longer enforcing the rule.

The crowd then, I kid you not, surged through the protective barrier to stampede the store crushing many people one the way in to buy the discounted BlackBerrys. It looks like up to 90 people feinted and many were sadly injured. Three even had fractured or broken bones. Still this is the first time I have ever heard of such a thing happening at a BlackBerry sale event.

According to the Jakarta Globe (thanks Ron Ish) The Jakarta police have named one of the event organizers as a suspect:

"We have charged [the suspect] with violating Article 360 of the Criminal Code, for negligence which resulted in severe injuries," the police chief said. "The suspect did not estimate how many people would attend and did not prepare adequate security to anticipate potential problems"

They also seem to be questioning BlackBerry officials on how they did not provide enough security. Check out the details here and here from the Jakarta Globe.

Best Buy Cancelling BlackBerry PlayBook Orders? No Longer in Stock?

Posted: 28 Nov 2011 06:37 AM PST

playbook_promo 199

We have been hearing from contacts at retail stores that the BlackBerry PlayBook is selling very well with its current $199 price point. Today is Cyber Monday and I am sure even more of these devices are going to be flying off shelves but there is an interesting development happening. Electronista noticed that Best Buy has removed the BlackBerry PlayBook models from their website right before Cyber Monday (Today) even though the promotion is supposed to go until December 3rd. The odd thing is their PlayBook page redirects to their BlackBerry smartphone page now at www.bestbuy.com/playbook.

There are also Best Buy customers reporting that orders are being dropped even if the order is already charged and ready. The Best Buy forums suggest that they may be "overextended" whatever that means though we have heard RIM has tons of PlayBooks in their channels. Stores like OfficeMax and Staples also have the PlayBooks in limited stock or only certain models.

Its hard to guess exactly what is happening but we will reach out to RIM to see what they have to say! Either way you can still pick one up for the same price or lower directly from RIM.
