RIM Publishes Changes in Upcoming BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5.0.4 Posted: 16 Aug 2012 01:28 PM PDT
RIM has not even announced BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 SP4 but they have just made its features official. Piotr @BBNews.pl noticed that RIM published a knowledge base article detailing the new features of BES 5.0.4 for Exchange, Novell GroupWise, and IBM Lotus Domino. Many of these updates seem to mimic the latest BIS update but you can find the details below. Mainly what I found interesting was the higher limit for HTML emails and attachments along with automatically pre-populating your older email on every activation not just pin changes. Java Support
BlackBerry Monitoring Service Removed
New Messaging Features
Email Pre-Population
New Calendar Features
Security Enhancements
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit
Performance Features
Access Control Policies
VPN Profile Certificates

RIM Invites UI Designers to “Stump the BlackBerry Devs” Posted: 16 Aug 2012 10:46 AM PDT I am really enjoying the new lines of communication RIM has opened up to their developer community. Derek Konigsberg, a long time BlackBerry developer and a friend, inspired RIM's developer relations team to try a new idea. Its called Stump the BlackBerry Devs and encourages BlackBerry UI designers to submit mock ups or designs that would be difficult to implement using the BlackBerry 10 Cascades UI framework. The Cascades UI development team will try to implement that mock up using Cascades using no hardcoded values. You simply have to submit an image of your mock-up to the @BlackBerryDev Twitter account using the hashtag #StumpTheBlackBerryDevs to be part of it before August 31st. RIM will then choose the three most difficult and creative submissions in September and implement them using the R8 SDK beta release that is coming soon. RIM will then reveal the designs during BlackBerry Jam Americas during a session on the Unconference Day. Check out the details here on the DevBlog and let us know if you submit a design! RIM Offers Enterprise & Government Customers a BlackBerry 7 Trade-Up and Recycle Program Posted: 16 Aug 2012 08:44 AM PDT
RIM has had a tradeup program for awhile now to get enterprise and government customers on BlackBerry 7 devices. This is actually a great idea since many of these customers are still running lower end BlackBerry 6 or even BlackBerry 5 devices. RIM has just announced another sweetener to to the tradeup deal with a new Trade-Up and Recycle program. This gives government and enterprise customers up to $100 off each device when you trade in an older BlackBerry device along with helping with recycling the older devices. Check out the details in the announcement below:

Shape Releases Free IM+ for the PlayBook (Android Port) Posted: 16 Aug 2012 06:55 AM PDT
While Shape does have a decent BlackBerry PlayBook Instant Messaging client called IM+ they have been pricing it a bit high at $7.99. This has left space for them to release a free version of IM+ for the PlayBook but there is a catch. This free version is not a free copy of the BlackBerry PlayBook optimized version of IM+ but rather a port of their free Android IM+ app. This means this free version is not designed for the PlayBook but it does work decently. Check out IM+ free free for the PlayBook in App World. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Ripple Emulator Refreshed Along With BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Community APIs Posted: 16 Aug 2012 05:32 AM PDT
RIM has updated their Ripple Emulator this week with a quick refresh. It now allows you to easily set the services to start and stop with chrome and other simplifications to avoid the command line. This new refresh also adds emulation for the new APIs delivered in the latest BlackBerry WebWorks SDK releases. RIM has also enhanced support for the Apache Cordova emulation for those of you using it. Check out the details on their DevBlog or more on the Ripple download page. Also worth noting is that RIM has updated the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK to expose the ability for creating your own extensions. This allows you to add your own native APIs that RIM has not exposed yet in the same way RIM does. If you wanted access to some more native functions from WebWorks or want to contribute your own APIs in the future to the community check out the details here. Personally I am loving RIM's focus on solid HTML5 WebWorks development for BlackBerry 10. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
