Collection of Fun Flash Games for your PlayBook in FlashGames

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:15 PM PDT

I happened to spot FlashGames by Richard Aberefa in App World and am really glad I did. When the PlayBook first came out I was scouring the internet for fun flash games but it was hit and miss due to touchscreen compatibility, ads, and other issues. Well Richard has done exactly what I would want by packaging a ton of flash games into one BlackBerry PlayBook app.

Many of the games in the 60MB+ install are playable offline and some are even playable with a bluetooth keyboard. The games not marked Offline require Wi-Fi to play. Some of the games are simplistic but others are simple fun and addictive like the Xtreme Skate. I found many of the games playable but others seemed to require a keyboard or mouse movement. According to the description in App World, FlashGames is currently free and will remain so for the next 2 weeks.

Check out FlashGames in App World and let us know what games we should play!

New BlackBerry Communities Unites RIM Communities On One Page

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 06:18 PM PDT

BlackBerry Communities

When I first saw this email from RIM I was really hoping it meant they managed to get all of their communities to use the same login. While that is not the case they have created a new umbrella page called BlackBerry Communities. According to RIM this new BlackBerry Communities effort is a re-branded and re-launched variant of MyBlackBerry. I found that my.blackberry.com still has the same features but it is not highlighted on the new BlackBerry Communities page.

What is very interesting is that RIM gives you a one page view of what is going on in the BlackBerry social world all in one place with BlackBerry Communities. It highlights things like RIM's 7+ million Facebook fans and almost half a million twitter followers. Also there is the fact that they have 320,717 BlackBerry support forum users. It is a pretty sweet page to get a snapshot of RIM's social dashboard but I wish it had more depth beyond the front page.

Check it out for yourself at us.blackberry.com/communities

Here is the email RIM sent out about the announcement:

Hello, As a valued registered user of MyBlackBerry™, we are pleased to notify you that the site is being re-branded and re-launched as "BlackBerry Communities," starting June 13, 2011.
You’ll be able to access our new Communities page at: http://us.blackberry.com/communities.
From the BlackBerry Communities page, you’ll now be able to scan at a glance all the activity happening in real-time in all our communities. And because we value the opportunity to connect with our customers online, you’ll also be able to quickly join any BlackBerry community conversation already in progress on Facebook®, Twitter®, YouTube®, our Support forums and our blogs, as well as see the top trending and newest free and paid BlackBerry Apps!
Thank you,
The BlackBerry Team at Research In Motion Limited

BlackBerry Playbook SideLoading Tutorial and Resources

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 12:35 PM PDT

Although the Playbook doesn't have OTA capabilities there is another way  users can load non App World applications. This method, perfected by Keeper (Berry Review Forums), is ideal for sharing ported  applications and, in case you are a developer, allowing Playbookers to beta test your applications. Side Loading, as it's come to be called, requires a PC and a few programs. Here is my attempt to create a tutorial for the process. Hopefully RIM simplifies this process but until then this is what we have.

First (on your PC) download and install JRE (Java Runtime Environment)

Then download and install the  Development Mode Installer which is used to load applications on your Playbook.

Once you are all set up on the Pc end you must enable Development Mode on your Blackberry Playbook.
Open your Playbook Settings (Swipe Down From Center on Home Screen)
Under Security select Development Mode and switch it to ON.
You will be prompted to enter a password . Make sure you enter something that is easy to remember.

Go back to your Home Screen. You will now see an icon of a character on your Home Screen Tool Bar.
Make sure you are connected to your Wifi and select the icon. You will see your I.P. address shown.
Write down or remember your I.P.

Now, on your PC open the DDPB Installer. Enter your I.P. and Password you chose earlier.

Side Loading is ideal for users that can not access App World  (Only available in US/Canada). Louis.Keeper has put together a healthy list of 50+ applications that will keep you busy. These are all available on App World and are intended for those who can not access App World. They are also all free.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qv7odxcxt28s7

Save the desired applications to your computer (make a new folder where you can easily access them).
In the DDPB Installer, click Add and select the Application(s). Make sure they are checked (check-box) in the DDPB Installer and click Install.

You will see this screen confirming the Applications are installing to your Playbook.
Once completed you can see them and use them on your BB Playbook.

Side Loading can also be used by Developers to share beta versions of their App World applications or rejected apps. Simply package your applications as a .Bar and find a suitable host and there you have it! Anyone with the know how can download your .Bar apps to their Playbook!

Major thanks to Keeper of the BerryReview Forums for bringing this to everyone’s attention. Check out his original thread for more support:

RIM Testing Out PlayBook OS 1.0.6 In Beta Zone for Select Developers?

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:09 AM PDT

playbook_01

Quite a few users are waiting for RIM to update the BlackBerry PlayBook OS with native email and PIM but it looks like another update is coming before that. The team at N4BB is hearing rumors that RIM is testing out BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.6 for "select developers" to test out in the beta zone. I have not seen the program show up for me but its worth checking out.

According to the leaked invite to the program the goal of OS 1.0.6 is for developers to test their apps against Adobe AIR 2.7 and Flash 10.3 so they are optimized and ready for the Tablet OS 1.0.6 release. Here are the details:

"On behalf of Research In Motion®, we are pleased to tell you about an exclusive Preview Program focused on providing developers a chance to test their applications on BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.6. The goal of this program is to ensure that your AIR 2.7 and Flash 10.3 applications are optimized and ready for the BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.6 release. Please read this entire notice, as it contains key information about your participation in this program.

This program is only available to a select group of BlackBerry PlayBook developers; as such we are very interested in hearing your comments and experiences. Since the program will remain open for approximately 1 week, it is crucial to submit all issues and feedback in a timely manner. Please use the programs discussion boards and share your experiences with us. RIM moderators will review."

Let us know if you were invited! This is the first attempt for RIM to use Beta Zone for the PlayBook so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. My guess is it will have to be tied to your BlackBerry ID because RIM has not been offering a way to do a sideload OS update or install.

Google Voice Lets You Keep Your Original Number When Porting

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 10:58 AM PDT

Google Voice

Google Voice keeps on getting better. They just announced a new feature last week that rounds out their number porting option. They recently introduced the ability to port your phone number to Google Voice but after 90 days your old Google Voice number would go back to Google. Now Google is offering users the ability to keep BOTH their old Google Voice number and their ported number for a $20 administration charge.

As Google explains "That means that calls made or text messages sent to your old Google Voice number will still reach you, however, your new primary Google Voice number will display on caller ID when you make calls or send text messages."

Its a really cool idea and I have to commend Google for offering a way to do it for only $20. To make your original number permanently stick around head to your Settings tab in Google voice and click "Make Permanent" by the number you wish to keep.

BlackBerry PlayBook Tots Game Adds Word Fun for Kids

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:18 AM PDT

 ss_05_drawit ss_02_drawit

Over the last two years I have been noticing more and more BlackBerry games targeted at children for BlackBerry devices. I doubt that kids learning their ABCs have their own BlackBerrys but parents are entertaining their kids with them. While this may lead to issues like drool on your keyboard the games are getting better.

ss_07_whackit ss_06_whackit

The latest game in the genre is Tots by Pixel Brain Games for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Tots wants to let you kid have fun with the alphabet through 4 minigames with two different themes. Check out a video of it below.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

The different minigames are:

  • Drawit allows children to practice the strokes required by both upper and lower letters (numbers too!).
  • Whackit is a classic whack-a-mole variation where children try to "whack" a particular letter with a hammer when it pops up on screen.
  • Catchit teaches children to recognize letters that make up simple 3-letter words.
  • Matchit is a fun exercise in matching uppercase letters with their corresponding lowercase counterparts.

Features of the game include:

  • Fully animated and easy to use navigation for all ages, completely controlled by touchscreen.
  • 2 themes to choose from:  Cute Dinosaurs or Beautiful Flowers (you can change at any time).
  • Delightful background music and sound effects.
  • Onscreen help bubbles (for parents) and swipe down Options menu.
  • 3 levels of onscreen hints for each game – you can turn off the hints as your child gets better!

You can find Tots in App World for $2.99 at this link

Latest BBM Hero Video Shows Creative Use of BBM

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 08:09 AM PDT

 Clubbers Malaysia

I have to give RIM credit for creating some interesting BBM Hero promotion videos recently. The latest one takes us to Malaysia where Sherman Patrick aka DJ Fracture makes for the most interesting use of over 1000+ contacts in BBM. Sherman is a property broker by day and a Club DJ by night but he has created a list of over 1000 contacts in BBM to keep them up to date on his gigs. He even runs promotions where members have to flash their BlackBerrys at the door to get in or get perks. Creative right?

DJ Fracture's BlackBerry Clubbers Malaysia also has a Facebook page which is pretty active. I also found this really slick background for my Torch on their page:

Farmdefense Mimics “Plants vs Zombies” for the PlayBook

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:12 AM PDT

farmdefense3 farmdefense2

If you like the genre of "Plants vs. Zombies"  you will definitely enjoy Farmdefense for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The gameplay is almost exactly the same though here you have an army of robots trying to invade your farm instead of zombies. You defend you farm with some of those crazy plant weapons like Chili throwers and metal eaters.

Farmdefense does lag a bit when you get a large wave of attackers but so far I have been having fun playing it. For $0.99 Farmdefense is pretty much a steal in App World.

Rumored Email from RIM Employee Provides Insight Into RIM

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:04 AM PDT

TopsecretGirls

Zaman59 pointed out an interesting article in the forums that I thought was worth sharing. The Business Insider article is supposed to be from a rank and file RIM employee giving some insight (bullet point style) on what is currently going on at RIM. There is even a great conversation going on in the comments headed by Janet talking about how the QNX core compares with Android. We have no way to confirm if this is a true RIM employee but I have heard similar statements from many employees who are afraid to go on record.

My favorite point made by the employee is so true even if this is not coming from a RIM employee:

Morale isn’t broken, but there is a lot of legal bureaucratic processes that slow us down. You’d think we have more lawyers on hand will all the patent lawsuits in mobile. Anyway, time to execute or time to market is paramount for us, and we need to keep improving it. That’s what Balsillie was talking about on the recent earnings call when he said he wants things earlier.

I highly recommend checking out the rest of the statements made by the employee about how RIM is in it for the long haul and QNX is their savior over at Business Insider. It is also interesting to see their take on the co-CEO's not doing the company service by doing interviews separately.

Let us know what you think!

Need for Speed Undercover v2.0 Released for the PlayBook

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 05:53 AM PDT

IMG_00000390

Need for Speed Undercover got an odd bump to version 2.0 without much to show for it. Usually a significant version update from 1.3 to 2.0 would come with some significant feature or functionality changes but I have not seen any. Some users are reporting that it loads faster which could be significant but I have not really seen a difference.

Let us know if you spot a change log otherwise you can check the Need for Speed Undercover page in App World.
