Elasitas Menoo Enters Location Based Food Review Field With Private Beta

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 01:22 PM PDT

Menoo

We heard about Tasterous a bit back and now it looks like they have some competition coming. Ashley let us know about Elasitas Menoo which is currently in private beta. Menoo attempts to mash together location based services with food reviews in a sort of Foursquare meets Yelp. So far I have learned from DailySocial's coverage that Menoo’s US version of their service works with AllMenus.com to get their info along with their catalog from Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. They also told confirmed that augmented reality features will be coming with BlackBerry 7 devices.

You can sign up for an invite to the private beta of Menoo at this link. Let us know if you get in!

MasterCard & CSI Launching Mobile Payments App for BlackBerry & Other Platforms

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 09:38 AM PDT

csi enterprises Mastercard payments

There is quite a bit going on in the mobile payment space with the latest coming from MasterCard and CSI Enterprises. CSI Enterprises already offers some special purpose MasterCard solutions and according to Engadget they are working on a new one for BlackBerry, Android, and iOS. Since both BlackBerry and iOS do not currently have NFC capabilities until the BlackBerry Bold 9900 brings NFC it will be interesting to see how the payments work.

This new solution is scheduled to launch in July which looks like it may be before the Bold 9900 launch. Should be interesting to see how this pans out. It would be really slick if RIM teamed up with Visa or MasterCard to enable "tap to pay" style payments with the Bold 9900 and other new devices as they launch.

A Quick Video Tour of RIM’s History In Less Than 4 Minutes

History of RIM

The team at Phones4U have been having fun with RIM the last few days. Their latest work is a quick video history of RIM. Its not the most accurate of videos (I noticed a few mistakes) but it is fun to watch. The British accent may be a bit hard to understand but we can always play a quick game of "What did they get wrong."

Let us know what you think they got wrong or missed in the video!

Free Package Tracker App Keeps Tabs On Your Stuff

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 07:27 AM PDT

I have been looking for a good combined UPS and FedEx package tracking app for my BlackBerry and until now I have been mostly out of luck. Don let me know about Package Tracker by Mango Technologies that tracks your packages for free in their slick looking app. The only downside is their apps is a big heavy at almost 1.5MB making it a hard sell for users with older devices.

316999 316997

Currently Package Tracker supports the main 4 carriers:

  • DHL
  • FEDEX & FEDEX SMARTPOST
  • UPS
  • USPS

They plan on adding support for more couriers soon to almost a dozen and they promise you won't even need to update the app to get the new features. You can pick up the free Package Tracker app in App World here.

BlueBox has been stealing all the thunder with their BlackBerry PlayBook DropBox client. Now we have competition in town from Files & Folders by Innovatology. Their new app is a file manager for your BlackBerry PlayBook with integrated DropBox support. It lets you manage your file on DropBox as if they were local letting you copy and paste folders and files between the cloud and your PlayBook.

320570 320569

I don't have an active DropBox account to test this out with but a friend said it works nicely. Innovatology is selling Files & Folders for $1.99 in App World with a trial available.

T-Mobile 4G Payday Trivia Contest – Chance to Win a Audi Weekly & $4000 Daily!

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 06:47 AM PDT

T-Mobile 4G PayDay

I have to say I am still scratching my head about this new T-Mobile 4G Payday Trivia Contest. The prizes are very slick with an Audi Q5 vehicle being given away every week and $4,000 being given away every day. The part that gets tricky is that it is an SMS based Trivia Game. You test you knowledge through SMS trivia questions where you answer as many questions as you can in an hour. You can play up to 3 games a day and the longest streak of correct answers in each game day or each week wins.

Where is tarts to look like a lottery is when you get stuck with questions. You can then choose to get a HINT to narrow your choices, or to SKIP that question to continue your winning streak and get a different question. The catch is that either a HINT or SKIP costs you $1.00 each and is limited to three per game. You also have to be a T-Mobile US subscriber who is 18+, not an employee, and have a valid drivers license and not live in Vermont, Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Montana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, Puerto Rico. On the upside it seems like the SMS back and forth to the number 4444 are free according to the FAQ.

You can find the full instructions  at t-mobile4gpayday.com. Let us know what you think of the contest in the comments.

Test your knowledge – answer as many questions as you can in an hour, you can play up to 3 games per day. The longest streak of correct answers in a game each day and each week wins!

How to play from T-Mobile's website:

  1. T-Mobile customers can text START to 4444 to review and accept the game rules and participate in the 4G PayDay mobile trivia contest. The game will consist of multiple-choice trivia questions delivered via text message.
  2. The goal of the game is to correctly answer the most consecutive questions within an hour. Time starts once the first question of each game has been answered.
  3. If players get stuck, they can choose to get a HINT to narrow their choices, or to SKIP that question to continue their winning streak and get a different question. (Both options are limited to three per game and cost $1.00 each plus tax).
  4. The game ends with one incorrect answer or by reaching the one hour time limit. Each player can participate in three games per day.
  5. The player with the most consecutive correct answers in one game each day will win the daily $4,000 prize. The weekly Audi Q5 vehicle winner is determined by the most consecutive correct answers in a single game for the week. In the event of a tie, the most consecutive answers in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 Pegged for August & September Launch in the UK?

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 06:35 AM PDT

Carphone Warehouse 9900

We let you know a bit back that Three UK had the BlackBerry Bold 9900 on their website with a tentative launch of August. They seem to have since revised their projections to a September launch on that Coming Soon page. On the other hand Carphone Warehouse UK is now listing the BlackBerry Bold 9900 as launching in August 2011. In other words signs are pointing towards an August/September launch in the UK.

The question is if the US and Canada will be getting the device before the UK or will it just be launching in every country as soon as RIM can get carriers to approve them. What do you think? I just keep on seeing and hearing about the 9900 and I really want to get my own…

Thanks Ashley for pointing this one out via PhonesReview UK

 BlackBerry Bold 9900 Phones4U review

I have to give our friends across the pond some serious credit for this one. I am a huge fan of British humor and Phones4U really managed to hit it on the head with their preview video showing off the BlackBerry Bold 9900. While the premise is cheesy I was laughing throughout the video… Check it out for yourself below and let me know what you think!
