We mentioned Clapfoot's popular Tank Hero game launching on the PlayBook earlier but Daniel pointed out to me that they have also launched Virtual Table Tennis 3D. This is another one of their games that has done relatively well on other platforms and runs beautifully on the BlackBerry PlayBook. As the name suggests the game has you pitted against a computer player testing your serves and shots with 30 levels and 3 difficulty settings.

Slick Tank Hero 3D Game Launches on the BlackBerry PlayBook!

I have to say I have been loving these heavy hitting games launching on the BlackBerry PlayBook. RIM really seems to have heard loud and clear that when users were asking for "Apps" they were mostly talking about games. The latest to launch on the BlackBerry PlayBook is the sweet Tank Hero game by Clapfoot. Just to give you an idea this is a game with 142,844 reviews on Android though it is ad supported on that platform. To give you an idea of the addictive gameplay check out the trailer below:

RIM Once Again Hints to Zinio Coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook

This is starting to drive me batty. We have seen signs that Zinio was bringing their very cool Adobe AIR powered magazine app to the PlayBook since March of last year. Hell we even saw a preview video in June. Now I just noticed that RIM has slipped it into their CES announcement for the PlayBook 2.0 OS. They even threw in Cut the Rope too which I had a chance to play at BlackBerry DevCon in October. Here is what they said:

Your favorite apps plus thousands more – many exciting new applications built for the BlackBerry PlayBook will be made available on BlackBerry App World with the availability of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0. From gaming and lifestyle to business and productivity, RIM is showcasing some of the latest apps available for the BlackBerry PlayBook at CES 2012 including Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Groupon, Thomson Reuters, Zinio and many more.

I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Zinio. I don't see why they would have to wait for PlayBook OS 2.0 to drop but that is only a month or so away. The question is if RIM is simply holding back these apps for a bigger v2.0 launch. What do you think?

Verizon Announces OS 7.1 & BlackBerry Curve 9370 Launch

Verizon has finally announced that they are launching the BlackBerry Curve 9370 on January 19th. Just as a reminder the Curve 9370 has double the ram of the other new Curve's along with sporting both a CDMA and GSM radio so it is a cheaper global phone. Verizon has also announced that BlackBerry 7.1 will soon be available for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and the Curve 9370 will be upgraded to 7.1 "in an upcoming software update."

The BlackBerry Curve 9370 will be available for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate on January 19th. No exact date was set for the BlackBerry 7.1 launch but we hear it is soon (like this week soon).

RIM has rolled out BlackBerry Travel v2.0.16.99 today as promised. This new version adds some improvements but mostly it is a new "Special Offers and Alerts" option. Here is how RIM describes the new update that rolled out today:

Are you a frequent flier or avid traveler? The updated BlackBerry Travel app virtually plans your trips for you, from airport pick up and drop off to accommodations and scheduling. You'll be able to find deals on hotel and car rental options, or arrange for limo service to and from an airport. Plus, you can rest easy knowing that the BlackBerry Travel app will quickly notify you if your flight is delayed or cancelled, and that it can help you find a new flight right away. No matter where you do your booking, the automatic trip scanning feature can pull your trip details into the app, so you don't have to. See all your travel updates in one place as they happen, and don't worry about double and triple checking your itinerary; if you've missed anything, BlackBerry Travel will let you know!

You can find the new version of BlackBerry Travel free in App World. I did also find a knowledge base article that does a good job of describing the new Special Offers and Alerts saying:

New in BlackBerry® Travel 2.0 there is a new feature for Special Offers and Alerts.

These are optional and can be configured within the application Settings menu:

  1. In the BlackBerry Travel Application hit the BlackBerry® button and select Settings
  2. Scroll down and select Offers and Updates
  3. Then, once directed to the mobile site, toggle the following options Yes or No:
  • BlackBerry Travel News
    Receive a weekly email containing updates about the service, including tips and tricks for frequent travellers
  • BlackBerry Travel Customized Daily Deals
    If future itineraries are in the system for your account, receive a daily informative email about deals and offers relevant to the travel destination(s).
  • BlackBerry Travel Special Offers to Your Favourite Places
    Travel offers (flights, hotels and more) for destinations that you have travelled too in the past. The frequency of these offers is based on availability but will not be more than once per week.
  • Special Offers For Your Next Trip
    Special Travel offers are pushed to the offer card in the BlackBerry Travel application. These offers are based on your upcoming trip destinations.
  • What's New This Month in BlackBerry Travel

BlackBerry Messenber (BBM) 6.1.0.49 Now Available to All

RIM has rolled out BlackBerry Messenger (aka BBM) v6.1.0.49 today as promised. The new update brings a few nice additions along with NFC support in OS 7.1 and other perks. The main new features according to the download page are the addition of:

  • Support for Animated Avatars – display pictures can now be animated!
  • Enjoy a new selection of Emoticons
  • Double the space to update your Personal Messages
  • Customize the colour of chat bubbles for your contacts
  • Simpler display picture update from the camera app – snap a picture and display it on BBM right away

Definitely worth a download though you can check the change log below:

We told you about ProInsights by Xlabz for BlackBerry PlayBook late last week. In case you missed it ProInsights is a slick app that turns your LinkedIn profile data into bite-sized infographics providing insight into your network. The app extracts the data from your LinkedIn profile and shows you useful nuggets of information through a cool portfolio style design. ProInsights claims to "reads between the lines of your LinkedIn profile" and extract the data.

ProInsights decided to discount their app from the regular $9.99 launch price to $4.99 for a limited time (Ending Tomorrow?) so pick it up if you were planning on it!

BlackBerry 7.1 Adds FM Radio to BlackBerry Curve 9360 & 9370

I am not sure how many others are excited about this but I think its a pretty cool side feature. I used to love the FM radio on my Nokia ages ago and its cool to see RIM is sort of bringing it back. They just announced that the FM Radio API we heard about a bit before will be coming with OS 7.1 on the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and 9380. I am not sure why the CDMA variants were left out but I am guessing it has to do with the different chipsets.

Either way anybody else looking forward to the radio feature? It simply uses your headphones as a FM radio antenna.

Life Is Better Shared

  • Enhanced web browsing – the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 browser also includes a new reading view, which is designed to make web sites even easier to enjoy by eliminating page clutter at the touch of a button. What’s left is a cleaner format that is great for reading online news articles, blog posts, or websites that contain heavy amounts of text.

Availability

The BlackBerry® PlayBook OS 2.0 software update will be available as a free download for all BlackBerry PlayBook users and is expected to be available in February 2012.

  • BlackBerry Video Store will initially be available in the United States. Support for other countries is expected to be added later this year.

OS 7.1 update to be available officially today?

We have been seeing and getting pretty much of leaks for the new devices including Bold 9900, Torch 9810 and 9860; especially from team N4BB over the weekend. Today however, RIM has announced that BlackBerry 7.1 OS update will begin rolling out from carriers around the world beginning today and over the coming weeks. Sporting plenty of features that we have spotted already and known from the leaks, how fast and how well will these official updates be?

Some highlighted features:

  • Mobile Hotspot: Turn your BlackBerry 7.1 OS device into a Wi-Fi® router anywhere, anytime! The new OS seamlessly provides Internet access for up to five Wi-Fi devices, including laptops and tablets.
  • Universal Search: For this new release, we wanted to focus on the intelligence of our system and our apps – in other words, we wanted to create an intuitive experience that does the thinking for you. For example, Universal Search now has a new auto-suggest feature that that intelligently filters Bing® search results to offer you a variety of relevant Web sites based on your search terms.
  • BlackBerry® Tag: Share contacts, media and files, and even invite friends to BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM) through a simple touch. BlackBerry Tag unlocks near field communication (NFC) capabilities for everyday use and makes sharing a lot faster and much more personal.
  • Wi-Fi® Calling (where available): With BlackBerry 7.1 OS, you'll be able to make Wi-Fi calls using your carrier's Wi-Fi calling service (aka UMA-lite or GAN-lite). Wi-Fi calling allows you to save your talk time minutes and make phone calls over any Wi-Fi network. Not all carriers offer such a service so check with your carrier for availability.
  • FM Radio: The BlackBerry 7.1 OS update will let BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 and 9380 smartphone customers enjoy FM radio. The Curve models include a built-in FM radio so you can tune in to local FM radio stations. Simply plug in your headset to boost the reception (it acts as the antenna). Plus, no data usage or data plan required!
  • BlackBerry® Maps: When you launch the new BlackBerry Maps you'll be able to discover special offers, coupons and discounts from nearby vendors – and, of course, you can act instantly by calling about the deal, finding the best route to get there, or grabbing the coupon code.

Is “Stalking Text” The Creepiest App in App World?

Luc pointed out Stalking Text to me in App World and at first I was wondering what the story was. Then I read the description of what could have been a harmless and fun app. The developers managed to turn it into something way more creepy. Here is the description:

  • Have you ever wanted to talk to a girl on some place but you didn’t know what to say or you were too shy to say it?
  • Have you ever felt you were being watched when you were using your phone and people tried to look at your screen and try to see what you were doing? I bet you ever wanted to say something to them but didn’t know how.

If this has ever happened to you, this is your tool then. With Stalking text you can display huge text messages on the screen so that people can see it from a distance. For example: If you see that a really pretty girl is looking at your phone, you can write the message "YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL" or "HELLO GORGEOUS" and display it on big fonts, and she’ll be able to see it from a distance.

You can think of any situation to use this application. This is ONE OF A KIND!
