Rumor: T-Mobile Rolling Out Their Own Tiered Data Plans?

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:06 AM PDT

T-Mobile Teired data

While AT&T and Verizon have rolled out their useless tiered data plans we are now seeing T-Mobile following in their own way. T-Mobile already limits "Unlimited" plans to EDGE speeds once you use over 5GB a month which is nicer than other carriers that charge you overages. According to the trusty TmoNews T-Mobile is working on both sides of the 5GB spectrum with some new smartphone data plans in the following style:

  • $10 for 200MB
  • $20 for 2GB
  • $30 for 5GB
  • $60 for 10GB

The interesting thing is that, unlike AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile will simply drop you down to 2G speeds if you cross your data usage bucket. 2G speeds kind of suck but at least you won't be charged an arm and a leg in overages. According to TmoNews these plans will start rolling out on May 22nd. I would be hard pressed to imagine a BlackBerry using up to 10 gigs but maybe once RIM rolls out the new OS 7 devices with the mobile hotspot feature if T-Mobile does not tag on another "tethering fee."

Latest RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Video Shows Off Flash in the Browser

Posted: 16 May 2011 02:48 PM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Flash Support

RIM is really hitting strong with the Flash support they have brought to the BlackBerry PlayBook. Their latest video (commercial) posted on YouTube puts that Flash support front and center. It shows off some impressive Flash websites loading in the browser with beautiful fluid graphics. The video kind of reminds me of a friend who was demoing the device a few days ago showing all it can do.

Chat With AIM Friends Using Google Talk for BlackBerry

Posted: 16 May 2011 01:05 PM PDT

AIM BlackBerry Google Talk Chat

Google and AOL just completed their integration of Google Talk and AIM with a roll out this week. Before Google let you login to your AIM/AOL account inside Gmail but now it truly is much easier. You simply add your AIM/AOL friends to Google Talk by using USERNAME@aol.com with their AIM USERNAME and you can chat from AIM to Google users by using USERNAME@Gmail.com with their Google Talk USERNAME. It really is that simple and will keep you from having two different IM clients open.

Its kind of a cool way to still keep in touch with your friends on another network while on your BlackBerry. You also don't have to change any settings on either account. Let me know how it works for you!

Do You Want a “Today Screen” on Your BlackBerry?

Posted: 16 May 2011 11:21 AM PDT

BlackBerry OS 6 Today Screen BlackBerry OS 6 Today Screen3

One of the things I have sort of missed since moving to BlackBerry OS 6 was the today screen themes that shipped with previous devices. RIM gave up on that old model with their new Activity Feed bar you get when you click on the notification bar. While at BlackBerry World my BlackBerry Torch decided to glitch out and for about an hour I had a today screen. It was really cool. For some reason the activity feed was locked in the open position and I could open and close the homescreen over it.

This made me wonder. Do you have any interest in a "Today" style homescreen? They seem to have gone out of fashion and I was curious what the general consensus was. Maybe their time has come and gone… Or maybe RIM should find a way to make this glitch permanent… :)

Posted: 16 May 2011 10:23 AM PDT

PlayBook Video Downloader YouTUbe

Quite a few readers sent this in as a tip so I thought it would be worth mentioning. There are thousands of websites and tools out there that help you save YouTube videos from your browser though most of them are targeted at desktops and not tablets. PlayBookRevolution decided to do something about that and released a nice script and dedicated page to help you simply copy and paste the YouTube video link to generate download links.

Simply head on over to this link and paste your video link. It should work on YouTube, Metacafe, Daily Motion, Google, and a maybe other sites. Let us know if you find any other tips. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

BlackBerry ID Found in Latest OS Leak for the 9800?

Posted: 16 May 2011 09:40 AM PDT

I recently upgraded my 9800 to the latest OS that was leaked last week. When I was searching for the setup option for BIS I noticed that this latest OS has BlackBerry ID managing options included. This is the first time i’ve seen this included in the OS. A few months back we had seen leaked version of BlackBerry ID that was extracted from an OS for a different device. This version allowed me to simply logging with my current BlackBerry ID without having any problems.

Am not sure if this has been there before but first time I have seen it.

Update Thanks to Roy, he explained that this is not the case, but it is probably due to me using BBM 6 read the comment by him below.

RIM Puts BlackBerry Feedback Tool App in App World

Posted: 16 May 2011 09:15 AM PDT

Submitting a Vote

Back in June of last year RIM started testing out a new BlackBerry Feedback Tool in their Beta Zone. Now almost a year later Scott @BBSync noticed that RIM has finally posted the tool in App World for all to enjoy. The new version is 1.0.0.20 instead of the 1.0.0.17 in Beta Zone.

If you didn't get the tool from the Beta Zone back then you might want to now. It gives you a chance to give RIM a piece of your mind with feedback on everything on your BlackBerry. Here is how RIM describes it:

Express yourself with the BlackBerry Feedback Tool – a feedback application especially for your BlackBerry! Once you download the BlackBerry Feedback Tool, it is available in your device menu at all times and can be used to send feedback on BlackBerry features, functions and applications at any time! We want to hear from you!

You can pick up the feedback tool now in App World but if you are on a BES you need to make sure your admin enables the IT policy for it.

BIS 4.0 Coming Soon? RIM Announces it on Support Forums…

Posted: 16 May 2011 08:21 AM PDT

BIS 4.0 announcement

We have known the official set of features for BIS 4.0 for over a month now but as far as I can tell RIM has yet to roll out the update. That may change soon if this latest post on the official BlackBerry Support Forums announcement site is any indication. Momehta, a support forums administrator, has posted a new article "Announcing BlackBerry Internet Service 4.0" and pointing to the 1+ month old knowledgebase article.

Let us know if you notice any of the new BIS 4.0 changes for your carrier. I checked on my AT&T BIS and it still does not have the password recovery option and improved Google Calendar sync.

Pipeline Pro Brings Google Reader Offline on the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 16 May 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Pipeline

While I am pretty happy with GeeReader there is now some competition in the Google Reader client space for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Tajddin from Magnoware let us know about the release of their slick Pipeline application. Pipeline comes in a Pro and Free version but the Pro version ($2.99) is where its worth checking out. The free version essentially acts as a simple RSS reader. The Pro version on the other hand throws in Google Reader integration along with the ability to view articles and images offline. They also let you share articles by email in the pro version.

Pipeline2 Pipeline3

The free version comes with a 14 day trial of the Pro version so definitely try it. While the Free version is not bad I highly recommend the pro version if you want offline caching.

Pipeline4 Pipeline5

Let us know what you think and thanks to Tashanna for pointing it out before!

Stocks App for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 16 May 2011 05:54 AM PDT

Stocks App Stocks App2

I am not much of a market watcher but I have been looking for a good app to keep track of my portfolio on my PlayBook. I spotted a new Stocks app by Alex Garipian which fits the bill perfectly. It provides a really nice interface and provides just enough data for my use. It really packs in some nice features though I find myself heading to Google Finance once or twice.

  • Create a scrollable watch list with UNLIMITED symbols.
  • Refresh stock prices with a click of a button.
  • Search by Stock Symbol or Company Name. ("GE" or "General Electric")
  • Search results are displayed as you type!
  • Add Stocks directly from the search results to your watch list.
  • Select a stock to display up to 10 years of price history information for almost any stock on a USA exchange. (Does not include intraday chart)
  • Interact with the stock history chart to find the price of the stock on a given day.
  • Maximize the chart to take full advantage of the large tablet screen size.
  • Scrollable Detailed Stock Information includes: Market Cap, % Change, Price, Bid, Ask, Change, Book Val, Open, Volume, Day Low, Day High, 52 Week Low, 52 Week High, EPS (Earnings Per Share), EBITDA, P/E Ratio, Short Ratio, Change From 52 Week Low, Change From 52 Week High, 50 Day Moving Average, 200 Day Moving Average, Price/Sales, Price/Book, Dividends Per Share (Div P/S).

You can pick up Stocks by searching for Stocks in App World or heading to this link.
