Will Native Email Come to the BlackBerry PlayBook in Mid June?

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:25 AM PDT

IMG_3419

One of the questions many potential BlackBerry PlayBook customers and current owners are asking is when native email and PIM will come to the device. At BlackBerry World RIM spread the word that it would be coming "this Summer" which is a nice and vague description of June, July, or August. The thing is OnTheWay reminded me about something Jim Balsillie said in a WSJ interview back on April 15th when he was asked about the lack of a native email client on the PlayBook. His response in case you forgot:

"We will have, if you want, a standalone non-web, non-paired email client on it within the next, I believe it was 60 days scheduled."

Notice the "I believe" prefacing that statement. Still if you are counting up from April 15th we are 42 days into that 60 day total. That puts 60 days at June 14th which is nice and early summer. As OnTheWay pointed out it would be odd if Jim said "I believe it was 60 days scheduled" if he meant end of summer which would be close to double that.

I just thought I would mention that there is a chance we may be seeing this sooner rather than later. I am still pondering how exactly native email and PIM will work on the PlayBook together with your smartphone but I already covered that.

So what is your gut feeling? Which month do you think RIM will launch native PIM for the BlackBerry PlayBook? June? July? August?

blackberryroadmap201115It is kind of funny to see an OS out in the wild for devices that are yet to be released. For those lucky enough to have a pre-release 9930 here is OS v7.0.0.104.  Not much you can do with this OS but some of you that like to dig into the workings of the OS you can download the file from the following links:

The 9930 is the CDMA version of the Bold Touch, but from what we are hearing it will be a while before we see these new devices on sale through your local retailer.

Warning: Do not try to load these OS on other devices as it is intended only for the device mentioned above.

Google Wallet Enters NFC Payments Game – What Does it Mean for RIM?

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:23 PM PDT

Google Wallet

It has been no secret that Google has ambitions for a mobile NFC payment system. They just confirmed that today with the announcement of the upcoming Google Wallet service. They have teamed up with Citi (bank/card issuer), MasterCard (card brand/payment network), FirstData (payment processor), and Sprint (carrier) to bring together their service into fruition. With the service they will allow Android phones like the Google Nexus S to make payments at any of the 120,000+ stores in the US that access MasterCard PayPass.

We all know that RIM has their own ambitions in the mobile NFC payments space and was even working with MasterCard at one time. The thing is we have heard that carriers are battling RIM over their attempt to do it themselves. That is where I found something interesting in their latest announcement of the BlackBerry OS 7 SDK which will have a new:

Near Field Communication (NFC) APIs, taking advantage of the new NFC radio, allows you to read and emulate virtual tags and create rich solutions for payment and m-commerce.

This might mean that RIM would allow other developers to create their own NFC payment systems. We might see a service like Google Wallet being the NFC solution for BlackBerry. The interesting twist in Google Wallet is that it allows you to add multiple cards including a prepaid "Google Payment Card." In other words it does not tie it to the carriers. Something makes me think that carriers won't give up on this easily and will want a piece of the pie. They have been slowing down mobile payments in the US for years due to their greed and it looks like NFC might be changing the tide.

I know companies who would be interested in RIM coming up with their own NFC solution like Google Wallet that would allow for payments through one of the MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or AmEx "tap and pay" solutions. Imagine if companies could issue corporate credit cards to BlackBerrys over a BES and control them that way. Could have some interesting ramifications… Especially if RIM revived their own BlackBerry Wallet app to make use of it.

What do you guys think?

Over the years it has been fun to see RIM let loose and their BlackBerry World event this year proved they can shed the business coat and have some fun. They actually posted a video and pictures from their latest BlackBerry Island party in Australia. I am not sure exactly what the story was with the party but I kind of want to go visit… :) Video is after the break:

More Pictures of BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 Leak Out

It was only back in February when we really started getting confirmation that a second Torch 2 was on the way. Now we have seen quite a few pictures and specs for the BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 along with a new set that came out this week from TechnoBuffalo (via CrackBerry). What I truly want is a solid release date for the device instead of more pictures but hopefully that is coming soon.
