Trouble Updating your BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha? Try this… (Mac Update Now Possible)

Posted: 20 Jul 2012 12:12 AM PDT

Dev Alpha

Some developers seem to have had issues with updating their BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha to the latest OS version this week. RIM has been working diligently on this issue and and it looks like they may have hit on what exactly is causing the issue. This thread in the BlackBerry support forum has been very informative and is highly recommended reading if you are struggling with the update. It essentially has you removing registry keys that may be pointing to the incorrect beta server. (Thanks for the heads up Peter) Namely:

  • Close Desktop Manger
  • Navigate to the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • Delete the SLSURL entry
  • Delete the WebSLURL entry.
  • Start up Desktop Manager
  • Note: for 64-Bit windows it is at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Research In Motion\AppLoader

Kudos to all the devs and RIM for figuring this one out. Also worth noting is that RIM has also put out a new version of Desktop Manager for Mac for developers with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. This version allows developers to update their Dev Alpha from a Mac. Check out the details here.

BlackBerry 10 Cascades UI Framework Also Gains Refinement in Beta 2

When RIM announced that is had updated the BlackBerry 10 Cascades Tooling Betas I was curious to dig through the documentation for any changes to the UI Framework. Well Anders @RIM has beat me to the punch and detailed what he thinks are the most interesting changes and improvements in the Cascades UI Framework in Beta 2 vs Beta 1. RIM has also provided a guide for porting your API usage from Beta 1 to Beta 2.

ActionBar2 ActionBar3 ActionBar4

The Cascades UI Framework is key to BlackBerry 10 since it will be the standard look and feel for native BlackBerry 10 apps. RIM has been refining that based on developer feedback and now we have new elements like modal dialog boxes along with improved tabbed panes for switching tabs. RIM has also added the application menu to Cascades which we are familiar with from the PlayBook swipe down menu. RIM has also improved the action bar to make it easier than ever for developer to add social and sharing options.

If you have been using the Cascades UI Framework in your BlackBerry 10 app then Anders write up on the updates is highly recommended Otherwise you can dive right in at the Cascades Microsite.

BlackBerry 10 Cascades Builder & Exporter Also Get Beta 2 Update

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 10:08 AM PDT

Cascades Tool

RIM made mention of Cascades also getting in on the tooling update today but now Markus Landin, Project Manager of Cascades @RIM, detailed exactly what changed. From what I read most of the Beta 2 updates focus on improving the usability of the Cascades Builder (the Eclipse Extension) and the Cascades Exporter (The Photoshop Plugin). I won't go into the details but overall it seems like RIM is taking their developer feedback very seriously including that survey they sent out a few weeks ago and turning it into results.

Check out all the details of the BlackBerry 10 Cascades Tooling Beta 2 on the DevBlog or download the updates from the Cascades Microsite.

PS: Kudos to the witty person at RIM who mocked up the screenshot above. :) I am expecting a Ludicrous Speed option in Beta 3!

RIM Patents Detecting and Conveying Emotion in Messaging Applications

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 09:55 AM PDT

BlackBerry emotion patent

RIM is really piling it on with their patent applications and approvals. This one was applied for in January of 2011 so it is not recent but it does cover detecting emotion in your words. The idea is that your phone will detect the emotional context of your message and present that determined emotion in the message. Your emotions are captured from multiple sensors on the device (mood ring BlackBerry anyone?) and sent in a standard format.

Here is how RIM describes it:

DEVICE AND METHOD OF CONVEYING EMOTION IN A MESSAGING APPLICATION

The present disclosure provides a device and method to convey emotions in a messaging application of a mobile electronic device. An emotional context of text entered into the messaging application is determined and an implied emotional text is presented for at least a portion of the entered text in accordance with the determined emotional context. The emotional context may be determined from captured sensor data captured by one or more sensors.

In other words you may need to be more careful about how much you let your hands tremble and face contort while BBM-ing your boss. :) I wonder if RIM will use automatic emoticons? via USPTO via Engadget

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Gets App World Client – RIM Invites Devs to Submit Apps!

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 08:45 AM PDT

appworld_highres

Don't get too excited yet but Tim Neil has confirmed that the latest BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha OS update includes the PlayBook App World client. That means those of you lucky enough to have one will be able to share apps from App World. Keep in mind this is not the final BlackBerry 10 App World client but for now it gets the job done. (Screenshots as soon as my Dev Alpha finishes updating)

RIM is now inviting developers to submit their BlackBerry 10 apps to BlackBerry App World and share them with fellow BlackBerry 10 developers to get early feedback. RIM is offering this to developers to let them test with other developers. You follow the regular submission steps in App World and select the "Dev Alpha" under the ‘QNX’ Platform as your target device when you upload your product release. Once you put it "up for sale" other developers will have access to it.

RIM Lays Out BlackBerry 10 SDK Roadmap & Promises More Details!

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 08:31 AM PDT

Flight Board

RIM keeps on piling on the gifts to developers today. Tim Neil just took to the BlackBerry DevBlog and games a high level overview of the upcoming SDK updates coming to the BlackBerry 10 SDKs. What is truly crazy and something I very much look forward to is that Tim is promising transparency about upcoming SDK updates. Tim clearly states this is something he has rarely seen any tech company do in this industry but he is promising top level line item deliverables for every SDK release. That means we will not be getting the nitty gritty but more the milestones and roadmaps.

Tim said these roadmaps should be coming in the form of a flight arrival board and its scheduled arrival time and status. He makes the usual disclaimers about software delivery being targets and not deadlines but he promises these roadmaps should be available in a "couple of weeks." So far he has shared this high level update schedule for the BlackBerry 10 SDK Betas:

  • R4: May SDK Beta Release (first beta)
  • R6: July SDK Beta Release (just launched) (We are here as of today)
  • R8: September SDK Beta Release (API Freeze, Binary Compatible with Gold)
  • R9: October SDK Beta Release (bug fixes)
  • R10: November Gold SDK Release (bug fixes)

That means September will be the big API freeze right around BlackBerry DevCon. Check out all the rest of the details on the BlackBerry DevBlog. I will definitely be following this one closely.

BlackBerry 10 Adobe AIR SDK & Android Runtime Betas Also Updated

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:52 AM PDT

BBW12_JamSuperSession_2

RIM has really gone across the board with their updates to the BlackBerry 10 development toolset today. We told you about the native and WebWorks SDK beta updates but now we also have updates to the Adobe AIR SDK and the Android Runtime. The new Adobe AIR SDK beta 2 now also has support for the new Invoke Framework added in the other SDKs. RIM details how to use it in ActionScript here.

Also of note is the updated Android Runtime for BlackBerry 10 Beta. I was hoping RIM would add Ice Cream Sandwich support but that was really shooting for the moon. They have rounded out the new enhancements they introduced in the 2.1 runtime while adding support for the telephony API. That means developers have access to cell location and networking services. Check out all the new API support in the documentation or download the updated v1.2 beta of the BlackBerry Eclipse Plug-in for Android Development Tools and Command Line Tools.

NOTE: The current Dev Alpha simulator does not support the invocation framework thought the actual dev alpha devices do but hopefully that will change soon

BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK Beta Gets a Refresh With Invoke, Push API, & More!

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:41 AM PDT

webworks-sdk-context-menu

WebWorks developers creating BlackBerry 10 apps have something to look forward to today. RIM has just released a refresh of the BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK Beta to correspond with the other toolset updates. The nice part is that they are releasing this at the same time as the native SDK update though it is missing some API parity like NFC and such. The new update includes the much needed Invoke framework for interacting with other applications and services on the app. This lets apps communication and is the foundation for Super Apps.

Also of note is the addition of the new Push API that takes away the confusion between BES and BIS push which is welcome. RIM has also adopted the file access API from the HTML5 file specification so things are closer to standard. One update I like is the addition of the context menu UI access along with the pull down menu using the swipe down event.

All in all you should definitely check out the new BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK beta. You can find more details in the full announcement here.

BlackBerry 10 Native SDK Beta 2 Released With Loads of New APIs

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:29 AM PDT

native-sdk-Invoke-API

RIM really came packing with the latest update to their Native SDK for BlackBerry 10. This new Beta 2 of the NDK includes a whole boatload of new APIs for developers to play around with. The most important of them all is the new Invocation framework. This allows developers to register handlers for interapp communications. In other words this is a huge step towards super apps on BlackBerry 10. RIM has also added APIs for NFC, Audio (stereo), logging, Notifications, Barcode processing, Cascades, Location, Video, Camera, Vibration Control, Clipboard, and more.

Check out their full announcement at the devblog or simply download it on the NDK microsite

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Gets OS Update to v10.0.6.361

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:21 AM PDT

Dev Alpha

As we guessed RIM is using the new BlackBerry Desktop Manager in the Beta Zone to roll out a new OS update to the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. If you are one of the lucky ones with a Dev Alpha you need to go get the latest desktop manager software from the beta zone and do a wired update. This is similar to what what we had to do when RIM released the unbricking OS earlier.

Check out the full instructions over here on RIM's website

Sketch W Friends v4.0 Released for the PlayBook

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 05:55 AM PDT

Sketch with Friends Sketch with Friends3

It has been awhile since we last mentioned Xlabz Sketch W Friends for the PlayBook. Since then they have gone from v2.0 to v4.0 released this week. We have no idea what is new in this update but the previous update improved performance in my opinion so I am guessing this is more bug fixing along with moderation improvements. In case you missed it before Sketch W Friends is a Real Time Multiplayer Pictionary Game for the PlayBook similar to the popular Draw Something game on other platforms.

You can pick up the premium version of Sketch W Friends here or the free time based trial here.
