| Three Funny & Free Prank Apps for BlackBerrys (Hackathon Entries) Posted: 26 Jul 2011 02:50 AM PDT We announced the winner of our BerryReview Hackathon Wildcard Contest yesterday and promised we would follow up with some cool free apps. Thanks to the contestants we have the top three apps developed for our Hackathon now available for all of you to try out. The goal of these apps was to make our judges laugh and TJ from Mblware succeeded along with Marc Paradise (BBSSH.org) and Eric Ebscer (Ebscer.com). While all three of them did a nice job we had to choose only one winner but we are trying to convince RIM to send all three of them to NYC to compete in the BBM Hackathon. Until then I thought you would all have fun playing with the three funny prank apps our contestants submitted for our Hackathon. Let us know what you think in the comments!
Winning Entry – Prankd by Mblware – This app is actually three pranks in one. You set it to kick off when you press the end call, back, or menu button a customizable amount of times. It can then have:
You can pick up Prankd OTA from your BlackBerry at www.mblware.com/prankd Runner Up – Optimizer by Marc Paradise – This app pretends to start optimizing your RAM, battery, and network and then continues to "Optimize" your whole device with a ton of Monty Python references thrown in for good measure. If you try to exit… well you will see. Lots of good fun to be had at: Runner Up – DeadScreen by Eric Ebscer – This app is actually quite creative but it only works on 9800 devices for now though Eric is working on a Storm version and a version for future touchscreen devices. The app takes a screenshot of your screen when you launch it and then every time you touch the screen nothing happens. It just shows a dead pixel wherever you touch. Should be a good way to frustrate coworkers. You can pick up DeadScreen here OTA. I wanted to thank all of the contestants for their great submissions. Hopefully RIM will make a regular thing out of this like other Hackathon contests. Maybe even having a follow up at DevCon. None of these apps actually do anything to harm your BlackBerry so no worries there. They are truly just meant to make you laugh or pull off a prank. | RIM Hints to BlackBerry 7 Announcements Tomorrow Posted: 25 Jul 2011 04:35 PM PDT We know that RIM has been holding back with BlackBerry 7 announcements but the dam is really starting to show signs of weakness. We even have RIM telling devs to release versions of their apps for devices RIM has not even announced yet. Now we have them on Twitter teasing that they have some BlackBerry 7 news coming tomorrow. I am not sure if this is simply a contest or something around the already announced BlackBerry Bold 9900 or about the other devices but I am hoping for the latter! | BerryReview Hackathon Wildcard Winner Heading to NYC to Compete! Posted: 25 Jul 2011 02:40 PM PDT Our BerryReview Wildcard Hackathon ended on Friday night and it was tough selecting a winner. There were a few submissions but three really stuck out above the rest. Sadly we had to choose only one winner to send to NYC to compete in RIM’s BBM Hackathon in mid-August along with an IOU for a BlackBerry Bold 9900. So start the drumroll… The winner is T.J. Jones from mblware!We wish the other runner ups the best of luck and have recommended that a few of them also be considered by RIM for the contest. Hopefully they also get to compete so we the community can benefit from some slick BBM SDK powered apps! | Sprint Mobile Wallet Available for Unreleased BlackBerry 7 NFC Packing Devices & the Curve 9330? Posted: 25 Jul 2011 02:20 PM PDT Well if you were wondering if Sprint was gearing up for a BlackBerry 7 launch soon you need wonder no longer. They just released their Sprint Mobile Wallet today in App World and the release is really telling. The Mobile Wallet app is limited to the BlackBerry Bold 9930, 9850, and 9330. I am not sure how the BlackBerry Curve 9330 slipped in there but hey that’s for us to speculate. If you have a 9330 and are a Sprint customer please download the Sprint Mobile Wallet app from App World and let us know what it does! It only requires OS 5.0+ which is another conundrum though maybe Sprint meant to select the 9360… On the other hand Sprint does talk about their Mobile Wallet for Android solution here on their website. | Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 Going Official Tomorrow in App World? Posted: 25 Jul 2011 01:25 PM PDT RIM opened up the public Beta Zone version of Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 back in mid March and it looks like it is finally getting ready to go official. I am not sure what took so long but this updated version brings Facebook chat and many other features to the Facebook for BlackBerry official client. There is no word on what version is going official but hopefully it is not the current beta zone .29 version which has issues with notifications not sounding. N4BB got this email stating that the update is happening tomorrow:

| Sweet Bald Eagle Picture Taken With a BlackBerry Tour 9630 Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:21 AM PDT
While most people would consider the BlackBerry Tour 9630 a bit dated I found this quite interesting. Mat from Gizmodo posted a picture taken by his stepmother. The pic was taken with a BlackBerry Tour 9630 with a 3.2MP camera and 2x zoom but still looks beautiful. She took it through a Bushnell Spacemaster 15-45x spotting scope and set it at 25x magnification which is pretty cool in and of itself! Check it out for yourself! | Google’s Chairman Eric Schmidt Caught Using a BlackBerry… Again! Posted: 25 Jul 2011 08:13 AM PDT You have to love when even RIM’s competitors use BlackBerrys. We saw Google Chairman Eric Schmidt using a BlackBerry Curve 8900 back in 2009 but now CrackBerry managed to snag another picture of him last week at an entrepreneurship summit in Indonesia. This time he was taking a picture with his BlackBerry Bold 9780. While I get trying out the competition but still its pretty amusing and an interesting vote of confidence for RIM. | RIM Announces Management Reorg & 2,000 Layoffs Posted: 25 Jul 2011 06:30 AM PDT RIM told us to expect more details on their Cost Optimization Program and now they have made it clear. They plan on streamlining operations by consolidating and changing the responsibilities of quite a few senior management roles along with reducing the global RIM team by 2,000 from the previous 19,000 employees to 17,000 employees around the world. This is a pretty big move for RIM along with announcing that Don Morrison is leaving RIM after 10 years of service since he has been on medical leave. My condolences to the TeamBlackBerry members who were let go but hopefully this will lead to a lean mean team at RIM that just pumps out quality hardware and software like clockwork. Full details below: Research In Motion Provides Management Update and Details On Cost Optimization Program Senior Management Update Thorsten Heins is taking on the expanded role of COO, Product and Sales. All product engineering functions, including both hardware and software teams, are being consolidated under Thorsten’s direction. This consolidation of product engineering functions is expected to both produce greater efficiencies and help to accelerate new product introductions in the future. After more than ten years of success overseeing sales and country operations for RIM in various regions including North America, Asia Pacific and EMEA most recently, Patrick Spence is taking on the role of Managing Director, Global Sales and Regional Marketing. Patrick will report to Thorsten Heins and will work with Thorsten to tightly couple the execution of product development and regional business operations around the world, enable faster local execution tailored to local market needs and support the needs of RIM’s valued operator and distribution partners. Robin Bienfait is maintaining her responsibilities as CIO, including BlackBerry Operations, Customer Service and Corporate IT functions, and also taking on responsibility for the Enterprise Business Unit focused on delivering outstanding customer service and extending RIM’s leadership in the enterprise sector. David Yach, in his role as CTO, Software, will focus on current and future software platforms, as well as the surrounding developer and application ecosystem. Jim Rowan is taking on the expanded role of COO, Operations and will continue to be responsible for manufacturing, global supply chain and repair services. As part of the streamlining effort and drive towards greater operational efficiencies, he will also now oversee the Organizational Development and Facilities Management functions. Brian Bidulka, RIM’s CFO, is working together with Jim Rowan in overseeing the Cost Optimization Program which is currently underway. Cost Optimization Program In addition to the management changes outlined above, RIM today provided further details on its cost optimization program, which is focused on eliminating redundancies and reallocating resources to focus on areas that offer the highest growth opportunities and alignment with RIM’s strategic objectives. The workforce reduction is believed to be a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company and it follows an extended period of rapid growth within the company whereby the workforce had nearly quadrupled in the last five years alone. As part of this broad effort, RIM is reducing its global workforce across all functions by approximately 2,000 employees. RIM intends to notify impacted employees in North America and certain other countries this week. The remainder of the global workforce reductions will occur at a later date subject to local laws and regulations. All impacted employees will receive severance packages and outplacement support. The size of this workforce reduction is in line with the preliminary estimate that was factored into RIM’s full year financial guidance on June 16, 2011. Following the completion of the workforce reduction, RIM’s global workforce is expected to be approximately 17,000 people. Additional information about the financial impact of this workforce reduction and other operating expense reductions will be communicated when the company reports Q2 results on September 15, 2011. As explained on June 16, 2011, any one-time charges associated with the cost optimization program are not included in RIM’s Q2 and full year outlook, but will be identified and disclosed on September 15, 2011. Research In Motion Announces Retirement of Don Morrison "We thank Don for his outstanding service to RIM. We understand and respect his decision to retire after successfully dealing with a serious medical challenge and we wish him a quick recovery," stated Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEOs at RIM. "Don’s presence at RIM will be missed, but our senior management and sales teams had already stepped up to manage Don’s responsibilities since the commencement of his medical leave and we’re confident in the ability of those teams to continue Don’s tradition of success going forward." Don Morrison has led a distinguished career. He joined RIM in 2000 with a mandate to strengthen RIM’s international operations and help build a world-class service organization. Since that time, RIM has expanded to more than 175 countries around the world and RIM’s fiscal year revenues have grown from approximately $200 million to nearly $20 billion. Before joining RIM, Don held a number of senior leadership positions in Canada, Europe and the United States with AT&T and Bell Canada. His creative and disciplined approach to a customer driven business model also led to significant operational improvements in those companies. | Easily Sideload Android APK Apps to PlayBook with DDPb Installer Posted: 25 Jul 2011 05:56 AM PDT One of our long time forum contributors, Keeper, has released an updated version of his DDPb Installer app this weekend. This new version simplifies the process of sideloading Android APK installer files onto the BlackBerry PlayBook to use with the leaked Android App Player. This is still not the simplest of processes but it works like a charm and just points out how much easier RIM needs to make the process outside of App World. Instructions are also included and I highly recommend checking out this forum thread for instructions and a link to install the DDPb Installer. | Leaked Documentation Shows New Sprint Release Dates for 9930 9850 & 9350 Posted: 25 Jul 2011 04:51 AM PDT We know practically everything we want to know about the upcoming device portfolio from RIM except for one thing: Release dates. We have some more insight into Sprint's release dates for some of these upcoming devices thanks to BriefMobile (spotted by CrackBerry) that show the BlackBerry Bold 9930, BlackBerry Torch 9850, and BlackBerry Curve 9350 launching on August 21st.
