BlackBerry Developer Challenge Adds BBM Social Platform Category Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:03 PM PDT Along with the release of BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 comes a new category for developers to compete in the annual BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge. The new competition is for social apps in the "Most Addictive Social apps using BBM Social Platform" category. This new category is now open for submissions until September 23rd, 2011. You can get more info at www.blackberrypartnersfund.com/challenge. This is on top of the already heated BBM Apps Hackathon in NYC, August 11-12, 2011, and its two day BBM social platform coding marathon. 10 BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 Powered Apps – Developers Sound Off! Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:02 PM PDT The team at RIM has rounded up some of the many new and long time titles in App World that are now making use of the new BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 and its new Social Platform SDK APIs. This list is in no way extensive and some of the apps are still rolling out but its a good place to start. It includes some of the apps we have already mentioned on BerryReview and including the upcoming augmented reality Wikitude BlackBerry OS 7 app. Personally I am checking out Backgammon King when I have time today. I have always wanted to play Backgammon with friends instead of random strangers. Each app below has an accompanying message from the developer explaining what they thought of BBM 6 and the social platform it is packing. Its great to see such a positive response from BlackBerry developers from games to business app developers. Backgammon King (App World) – One of Magmic's top games is now social. If you want to play against a friend , challenge a BBM contact to a friendly game or send an invite to download and start the fun.
Foursquare (App World) – Foursquare is all about helping you find new ways to explore the city. Earn points and unlock badges, profiles and status updates over BBM.
Huffington Post (App World) – The Huffington Post, a leader in implementing social features to reach and interact with its network of readers and bloggers, depends on the BBM Social Platform to continue to reach its audiences, even when they are on the go.
Jingu (App World) – Jingu is an application for BBM only and it is focused on enriching the BBM communication experience and the BBM community with the addition of social chat, photo sharing, avatars, and more.
Pocket Ants (App World) – You are the king of the ANTS- feeding, burning, fighting, and racing your ants. Now with BBM you can invite all your friends to rule an ant colony too.
Poynt (App World) – Find businesses, people, restaurants, movies, events and weather info. Going out for dinner with friends? Find a great spot and share it.
PowWow Study (App World) – PowWow uses BBM integration to provide real time social event coordination. Connected BBM 6 users are directly invited and notified of events that are created using Powwow. With PowWow the latest information is made available.
ScoreMobile (App World) – Up-to-the-minute sports scores, players, stats, betting odds and more. You can invite BBM friends into the app to chat about the latest sports banter, share scores and more.
Telmap Navigator (App World) – Telmap is a mobile location companion which now integrates with BBM to bring significantly enriched communication and interactions with users' real-time locations.
Unvired (App World) – Unvired Workflow by SAP allows users to take action on the workflow documents directly from their BB. The BBM integration allows sharing of screen shots/pictures with colleagues during collaboration.
Wikitude (Not Available Yet – BlackBerry OS 7) – Wikitude allows you to experience your BBM in a new way. By using the camera, simply pan around your mobile to contacts in Augmented Reality. You may even find new friends in your vicinity – a truly engaging and immersive experience.

RIM Releases BlackBerry Messenger 6 Officially! Posted: 27 Jul 2011 09:01 PM PDT RIM let us know that the official rollout of BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 starts at 12:01AM EST. Sorry we jumped the gun a few hours ago but now you understand why. You can start checking App World now for the update but due to their 24 hour cache period that may take a bit. As you have already seen RIM has started approving apps in App World that make use of the Social Platform available in BBM 6 so they are available when BBM6 launches now. In an interview with Mike Kirkup, Director of Developer Relations @ RIM, he told us that BBM now has 45 million users and is seeing tremendous growth. They process over a billion BBM messages a day and the number is only growing. This ability to use BBM inside 3rd party apps is going to be explosive but more on that soon. RIM's goal is to let developer harness BBM's instant feature. Mike told me his colleague described it as both Instant AND Intimate. In other words sub 3 second messages along with a intimate private chat setting. Now developers are going to be able to tap into that powerful BBM social graph. You should be able to find BBM 6 in App World sometime today or directly at: Check out the press release below: RIM Delivers Revolutionary Social App Experience with BBM 6 Waterloo, ON – BBMTM (BlackBerry® Messenger), one of the largest mobile social networks in the world is now enabling a new and revolutionary social experience. Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the availability of BBM version 6 (BBM 6), which provides support for "BBM connected" apps, allowing users to easily interact with each other from within the BBM connected app. BBM connected apps integrate the popular functionality of the BBM service and offer users the ability to interact with their friends from within the app itself. For example, with a BBM connected game app, users can invite their BBM friends to join them in a game and then chat with one another in real time while the game is being played – without ever leaving the game app. BBM 6 launches today and a selection of BBM connected apps are already available on BlackBerry App WorldTM.
Some of the additional functionality users can expect to see with BBM connected applications include the ability to:
The BBM 6 software will be available later today at www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger. A selection of BBM connected apps will also be posted on BlackBerry App World this week, with many more expected over the coming months. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Update: BlackBerry Messenger 6 NOT YET Available in App World Posted: 27 Jul 2011 02:22 PM PDT Update: Sorry all looks like a false alarm. Mea Culpa. It seems like it was simply showing the user that they have the Beta Zone version of BBM Installed. It looks like RIM has started rolling out BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 in App World. We know that RIM has a 24 hour cache in App World so it could take a bit to get to you but the process has started. BBM 6 is a big deal because it opens up the Social Platform API to developers for them to tie into BBM with their apps. It will lead to some really "sticky" apps easier app discovery. You should be able to find BlackBerry Messenger 6 in App World at this link. Thanks Gokulesh for the screenshot! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Gist for BlackBerry Gets Big Update & Support for More Countries Posted: 27 Jul 2011 01:20 PM PDT RIM purchase Gist a bit back as a way to create a social address book for BlackBerrys. Quite a few people were excited about what this could mean but it keeps on getting better. Gist just released a new version of their app (For OS 6.0 only) that first of all expands the app beyond the US and Canada. It is now available in :
They have also bulked up the app which now allows you to connect to Twitter, Facebook, and Google Apps (Including Gmail, Google Apps, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts) to bring all of your contacts to one place in one app. You can pick up this latest version of Gist in App World now. Android Market Caught Running on BlackBerry PlayBook Posted: 27 Jul 2011 11:30 AM PDT The fun continues with the leaked Android Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook. A creative user on CrackBerry Forums, Lawguyman, managed to get Android Player to run the Android Market app which is impressive. It can even install apps if you jump through a few hoops. Not that many details right now but we do have a video of it in action. Anybody else excited? I am just hoping this will end the strangle hold RIM has on the PlayBook by only allowing apps through App World. Video after the jump! OS 7.0.0.277 Leaks for BlackBerry Bold 9900 & Torch 9860 Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:39 AM PDT The leaks keep coming for these unreleased OS 7 BlackBerrys. The latest come to us courtesy of N4BB and bring OS 7.0.0.277 for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9860. Both of these devices are floating around so it could be those lucky few need an OS update but mostly I just like when users pick through the OS to see what they find. Hopefully these two are packing some goodies: Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above and is not an official release. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide.Don't forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. Don't forget our usual warnings: do not download and install these updates if you don't know what you're doing. Incorrect procedure or just bad luck could render your BlackBerry inoperative or unstable. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

The Joy Of Tech Comic Takes Another Pot Shot @ RIM Posted: 27 Jul 2011 10:34 AM PDT You have to love the guys at the Joy of Tech. Quite a few of you sent us their latest comic. This one tries to lampoon RIM as the "Five Stages of Death" though there may be some truth to it since RIM is transitioning. There is always the death of an old way and moving to a new way sort of like a phoenix rising from the ashes. As usual most are simply trying to just focus on the ashes. The irony is that everybody is telling RIM that it needs to change things and then starts claiming all of those changes are the sign of RIM dying… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Torch 9810 & 9860 Virtual Keyboard Caught on Video Posted: 27 Jul 2011 08:31 AM PDT We have see quite a bit of these unreleased devices in the past few months. Still it is nice to see somebody has dedicated some time to the changes RIM has made the the virtual on screen keyboard in BlackBerry 7. From what I am seeing in these videos by Dungmr1 we are in for a nice update. I am still hoping that RIM simply buys a company like Swype to revamp the keyboard and offer third party options but that is still a dream. Check it out and let us know what you think! Kudos to the CrackBerry team for spotting these. Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video LinkIf you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Torch 9850 Spotted With Sprint Branding Posted: 27 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT Starting to see a trend here? We are seeing more and more of these unreleased and even unannounced BlackBerrys as they get closer to launch. The latest is a BlackBerry Torch 9850 sporting Sprint branding this time instead of the AT&T branding we saw earlier today courtesy of N4BB. Nothing much else to see here but we already knew Sprint was carrying the 9850 so will you be picking one up? If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

According to their change log (Thank you RIM) this version adds support for BlackBerry OS 7 devices along with the new Mac OSX 10.7 Lion. BlackBerry Torch 9860 Caught Wearing AT&T Branding Posted: 27 Jul 2011 07:03 AM PDT We already know that Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile are carrying a whole slew of new BlackBerrys but AT&T leaks have been few and far between. The latest comes to us in the form of the BlackBerry Torch 9860 caught on camera by Engadget bearing the AT&T colors. Not much new here but there are some nice high res pics of the device. This is going to be the first all touch BlackBerry on AT&T since the Storm was a Verizon exclusive though the original Torch might count. I am curious if users are actually going to pick up the 9860 or rather opt for the 9810 or 9900. Let us know what you think! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
