BIS 4.1 Update Goes Live in Europe – Adds BlackBerry 7 Functionality

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 12:54 AM PDT

bisSetup

RIM more or less let the BlackBerry Internet Service v4.1 features out of the bag awhile ago but we have been waiting for the update to go live. It was supposed to go live in Asia Pacific on Sept 10th, Europe on Sept 23rd, and North America on October 11th but that did not happen for Europe. Now CrackBerry has heard from users in Europe that BIS v4.1 is live there. It went live in Asia Pacific in September but we still don't know if the October 11th date is set for North America.

Either way here is a reminder of the mostly BlackBerry OS 7 specific features that RIM has confirmed for BIS 4.1:

New Features of BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1

The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is designed to provide BlackBerry smartphone users with access to email messaging, instant messaging, Internet browsing, and more. BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers can receive automatic delivery of email messages from up to ten email accounts on their BlackBerry smartphones.
The following is a list of new features being introduced with BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1:
Improved large email and native attachment support

Subscribers using BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry® 7 installed can:

  • receive email messages that are up to 11MB in size
  • download attachments in their original format that are up to 8MB in size
  • view up to 300KB in an HTML email message

No interruption to email flow on SIM swap

Subscribers who insert a new SIM card in to their BlackBerry smartphone, including SIM cards from a different wireless service provider, no longer experience email flow interruptions. The BlackBerry Internet Service only stops sending email to a smartphone when the subscriber deletes all data from the smartphone, not when a new SIM card is inserted in to the smartphone.

Due to this change, before selling a smartphone, subscribers must delete all data from the smartphone (security wipe) to protect personal information, including email messages and synchronized contacts and calendar events. For more information on performing a security wipe, please see KB28225.

Note: This functionality will be available when BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1 is released in all regions.

Inbox priming for new account integrations

When a subscriber adds an email address to a smartphone, the inbox on the subscriber's smartphone is pre-populated with up to 20 existing email messages from the email account.

Additional language support

Latvian and Lithuanian are supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service. Emails received in these languages can now be viewed on BlackBerry smartphones.

Steve Jobs Passes On…

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 08:35 PM PDT

Steve Jobs

The news came in earlier today while I was out eating dinner with a friend and at first I thought it was another Twitter hoax. Sadly we lost a visionary tech leader today who inspired many of the innovations we take for granted today. While there is obviously an "Us & Them" dichotomy between many of us and Steve Jobs we  show our respect for a man who truly believed in living life with perfection as a goal.

Apple Annoucement

You will be sorely missed. You can read the announcement on the Apple website.

BlackBerry OS 7.1 Shows Up Again in App Logs

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 03:06 PM PDT

New_OS_7.1

We have known RIM is working on a quick follow up to OS 7.0 for a bit now but it has been quite shy. We first saw it back in August in the LogicMail logs showing a very early model Torch 9810 with OS 7.1.0.4. Now we have another tipster who contacted us with their logs showing BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 devices with OS 7.1.0.43 and other variants.

I have heard quite a few rumblings about this new OS 7.1 which is supposed to be more responsive and fix bugs all around but we usually don't see a public release until the builds start passing the X.X.X.100 stage so we have a bit to go.

wind-blackberry-training

User on Wind up in Canada have been waiting patiently for their BlackBerry 7 devices to launch. According to some information leaked on Howard Forums (via MobileSyrup) Wind users may not need to wait long. It looks like Wind is planning on releasing the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Curve 9360, and Torch 9860 in mid-October. My guess is we will hear more about pricing and exact dates soon.

Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook v0.9.1 Change Log

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 12:57 PM PDT

PlayBook Citrix Receiver PlayBook Citrix Receiver 1

We told you earlier today that Citrix updated their Citrix Receiver app for the BlackBerry PlayBook to v0.9.1. At that time we did not have a change log but we were hoping that it included a key feature needed by many users, namely Enterprise Access Gateway support (SSL VPN). Usually we would just update the previous post with a change log but it turns out that this update actually brings Enterprise Gateway Support! This is a huge deal for PlayBook users since a huge portion of companies use Citrix Enterprise Gateway.

Here is the change log MrSimmonsSr received from Citrix and posted in the comments:

  • Support for Access Gateway Enterprise 9.x and Secure Gateway 3.2
  • Supports SSL/TLS connections, SSL Relay and SecureICA.
  • Server URL Auto detection.

If Enterprise Gateway support was necessary for you then you may want to check out this new version in App World. MrSimmonsSr managed to get it to give him the app list but the apps are not running over the gateway for him yet. Hopefully that is just a small fix but let us know!

Desktop Manager v7.0.0.20 in Beta Zone – Already Leaked…

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 09:40 AM PDT

Desktop Manager7.0.0.20

Sometimes RIM makes me wonder why they need to make the BlackBerry Beta Zone so complicated with mounds of agreements and annoying keycodes. Earlier today RIM released Desktop Manager 7.0.0.20 in the Beta Zone. Before we even had a chance to mention it the keycode requirement has been removed by OpenSourceBB (via CrackBerry) and made available to all.

So now you have a choice. Download it in Beta Zone and deal with keycodes or simply pick up the OpenSourceBB version on MultiUpload.

Golf Battle 3D 3 Crusade of Destiny

We started off today with a listing of some of the slick new Marmalade SDK based games coming soon to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The first list was just the first of two parts and Marmalade is promising quite a bit more at DevCon. Below is the second group of games that are currently being ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook and I have to say I am excited. These games are definitely going to up the ante for Flash game devs on the PlayBook especially with the Native SDK coming soon. I know the popular Cut the Rope game was developed with the Marmalade SDK so hopefully that will come soon too! Anybody else excited?

Here are the last 7 of the 15 upcoming Marmalade SDK based PlayBook games:

 Grave Defense4 Blade of Betrayal3

One of the coolest parts of the Marmalade SDK being supported on the BlackBerry PlayBook are the games that are coming along with it. RIM has made a pretty strong push to support both Marmalade and Unity engines on the PlayBook through the native SDK and it seems to be paying off. Marmalade let us know that they have some crazy sweet announcements coming from game developers at DevCon. Until then they have provided us with a list of 15 sweet new games being ported soon to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Here are 8 of the 15. I will follow up with the next batch shortly!

DropBox v1.0.55 Comes Out of Beta With BlackBerry OS 7 Support

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 07:44 AM PDT

dropbox for BlackBerry

We told you last month that DropBox had a beta of DropBox for BlackBerry v1.0.52 in their forums that added support for all seven BlackBerry OS 7 devices. Now Tom let us know that DropBox has made v1.0.52 their official build and has brought it out of beta. We have not seen a new change log that is any different than the beta build so it could be they are just promoting the beta to production.

You can find the stable DropBox v1.0.52 at www.dropbox.com/blackberry. My guess is it should be updated in App World shortly…

Here is the change log from the beta release since it is probably the same:

New features:

  • Security passcode
  • Save email attachments to Dropbox

This build resolves:

  • Issues on 9900 & 9930 devices (BB OS 7 support for other devices
    should be working fine)
  • Bug on thumbnails screen where only a few thumbnails were loaded
  • Performance issues (more work to be done here)
  • Various design tweaks

Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook v0.9.1 Released

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 06:33 AM PDT

PlayBook Citrix Receiver PlayBook Citrix Receiver 1

BarracudaBob pointed out on the forums that Citrix has updated their Tech Preview demo of Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook. It got a bump to v0.9.1 though no change log in sight. I know the Citrix Receiver support has been a key app for the PlayBook in the enterprise since it launched. On the other hand quite a few users are waiting impatiently for Citrix and RIM to add Citrix Gateway support (Their SSL VPN solution).

Check out v0.9.1 of Citrix Receiver in App World

T-Mobile Offering BlackBerry Curve 9360 Free to Developers With 2 Year Contract

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 05:53 AM PDT

Curve 9360 t-mobile developers

One of our tipsters let us know that T-Mobile has extended their offers to developers to include the just launched T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 9360. The new deal is not much different than the previous one we mentioned for the Bold 9900. T-Mobile is offering the BlackBerry Bold 9360 for free after a $50 mail in rebate as long as you sign up for a 2 year contract. They also waive the activation fee and throw in free shipping which is much better than the $79.99 T-Mobile is charging on their regular website.

Check out the details at www.rimdevelopers.com
