Android Launchers for Honeycomb & Ice Cream Sandwich on the PlayBook

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 01:45 AM PDT

Android Launcher PlayBook

RIM ported the Android runtime environment to the BlackBerry PlayBook but that runtime is built on the phone specific v2.3.3 of Android. While this does not really limit the platform in features it does have a main drawback. Google has released v3.0 (Honeycomb) and v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) of Android which have a more tablet friendly interface which is called a "Launcher" on Android.

A few tinkerers in the CrackBerry forums managed to get the Android launchers for Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich to run on the PlayBook. This gives you a much nicer home screen interface from the Android player. This is not a huge deal but it is quite fun especially once you check out the video Shahzoor @BBin posted of it:

Now they have put out a similar release of v1.0.0.124 that fixes issues along with some nice improvements though it still has a way to go. Updated: BlackBerry Windows Live Messenger v2.5.108 Released – Others Coming Soon?

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 01:41 PM PDT

Update: It looks like RIM has gotten around to releasing the updates to Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger bringing them to v2.5.108.

Windows Live Messenger App World Update

RIM usually updates their native IM clients in one batch so this is a bit odd. Josh pointed out to us that Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry has been updated to v2.5.108 through App World. The thing is that Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger seem to still be sitting pretty at v2.5.85. My guess is that maybe RIM rolled out the Windows Live Messenger update early or the others are stuck in App World cache limbo… Or it could be simply that RIM is breaking tradition and just updating Windows Live Messenger by itself.

Either way you can download Windows Live Messenger at the link below:

If the other also get updated they should be here:

Free N.O.V.A & Texas Hold’em Poker 2 from Gameloft Courtesy of RIM

Texas holdem poker NOVA

RIM has just released their latest two free apps in their complimentary offering for the outage earlier this month. JD let us know about the two games that showed up in the new "Thank You Gift" category in App World. The games are N.O.V.A and Texas Hold'em Poker 2 from Gameloft. The games are only supported on select platforms and oddly I cannot find a record of their paid counterparts in App World so I have no idea if they are any good.

Check them out below and let us know what you think!

White bold 9900

I don't know what it is about BlackBerrys in white but they just look good. We heard before that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 would be getting the white treatment like previous bold devices and it looks like that is happening. Babisboi pointed out a video preview of the device done by Vodafone UK and the device really looks good.

Former RIM VP Tyler Lessard Joins Fixmo as Chief Marketing Officer

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 07:59 AM PDT

Tyler Fixmo

Tyler Lessard left RIM not to long ago and it looks like he has jumped ship to the other side of the platform game. Tyler was formerly the VP of BlackBerry Global Alliances and Developer Relations at RIM. Now he is on the development side working at Fixmo as their Chief Marketing Officer. Fixmo makes a handful of BlackBerry apps but their bread and butter is Fixmo Sentinel which is a cross platform management system for mobile devices.

Its nice to see that Tyler will be sticking around in the mobile ecosystem. Kudos to the Fixmo team and the best of luck to Tyler.

RIM Explains Platform Strategy Including Lack of BlackBerry Java on BBX Platform

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 06:55 AM PDT

BBX-next-exit

We told you that RIM officially said at DevCon last week that the upcoming BlackBerry BBX Platform would not support BlackBerry Java. Now Alec Saunders from RIM has detailed a bit more about that strategy on their DevBlog. They more or less explain that BlackBerry Java will not be supported on the BBX platform and what RIM's future strategy is. Here is exactly what they have to say about BlackBerry Java:

While we will continue to support our BlackBerry Java developer community as they build for BlackBerry smartphones, after further investigation we decided against supporting BlackBerry Java on BlackBerry BBX. We concluded that the BlackBerry Java experience on the BlackBerry PlayBook platform would ultimately not satisfy us, our development community, or our customers as the platform continues to evolve.

The way to go forward on the BBX platform is either using the BBX C/C++ Native SDK or WebWorks apps or in RIM's words:

  • The Native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook, supporting apps using C / C++.
  • The WebWorks SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook, supporting apps written in JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS. HTML5 apps will work on both the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphone operating systems today.

RIM also confirms that the PlayBook and future BBX devices also support two development communities beyond the core super apps through:

  • The Adobe® AIR® SDK for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, which supports apps built using Adobe AIR, Adobe® Flex®, and Adobe® Flash®.
  • The BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps, which supports apps written using Android v2.3.

The most important thing for BlackBerry Java Developers to read is the end of Alec's strategy explanation:

So, the next big question on your mind may be: Is this the end of the BlackBerry Java SDK?

The short answer: Absolutely not.

There are currently over 70 million smartphones in market today running the BlackBerry operating system and this number is growing:

  • The first BlackBerry 7 smartphones were just released, which will sizably increase the addressable market for BlackBerry Java applications.
  • There are more BlackBerry 7 smartphones yet to come and our customer base will not switch overnight to BlackBerry BBX-based smartphones; both platforms will co-exist for quite some time.
  • BlackBerry smartphone users are well known for getting long lives out of their smartphones. Even when upgrading to a newer model, older models are often not taken out of service, but are instead passed along to others.
  • RIM is committed to its BlackBerry development community. BlackBerry Jam is just the start. Developers can expect enhancements to continue on the BlackBerry Java SDK, making it easier and faster to produce money making apps for in-market smartphones running the BlackBerry operating system.

For more information on the various development options for the BlackBerry platform, check out the all-new landing page for developer.blackberry.com, as well as the newly launched microsites for theBlackBerry WebWorks SDK, the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps, and the BlackBerry Native SDK.

AT&T BlackBerry Bold 9900 “Coming Soon” – Possibly Nov 6th?

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 05:44 AM PDT

AT&T Bold 9900 Coming Soon

I know that AT&T customers have been clamoring for a BlackBerry Bold 9900 since the device launched. AT&T has been dragging their feet only offering their exclusive BlackBerry Torch 9810 but now it looks like the promised Bold 9900 is finally coming. Tony let us know that AT&T posted a tweet last week that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is "Coming Soon." The CrackBerry team also heard from their tip line that it might be coming on Sunday Nov 6th but they have not been able to confirm that.

Either way AT&T really needs to release the device yesterday!

Porsche Designed BlackBerry Bold Launching October 27th?

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 05:35 AM PDT

 BlackBerry Knight Porsche

We have seen quite a bit of the unusually designed BlackBerry by Porsche which is based on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 hardware. According to a invite scored by TBreak the device will be launching on October 27th at the worlds tallest restaurant in Dubai. It should be interesting to see what the demand will be for the device and what sort of hit it will take on owners pockets… In case you forgot what it looks like check out the pic after the break.
