What are “BlackBerry Cloud Services” in BBX??? Posted: 18 Oct 2011 10:24 PM PDT Alec Saunders waltzed up on stage at the DevCon keynote and started to explain the BBX platform strategy RIM is running. He presented the slide you see above as the basis for BBX. He points out that there is the BlackBerry X OS on the basis and then there is these "BlackBerry Cloud Services" that everybody just stayed really quiet about and didn't explain further. I am not sure what he meant by these BlackBerry Cloud services but it could have something to do with RIM's recent acquisition of NewBay which is a cloud based white label service provider. On the other hand that could be BBM, BlackBerry ID, App World, and such though that doesn't seem right. It could be something like the new BBM Music and the upcoming Video store that is also coming but not much has been said on that since it is not inherently a development tool. What do you think it is? If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Eternal Legacy HD (RPG Game) for PlayBook Released by Gameloft Posted: 18 Oct 2011 03:33 PM PDT Just when I hit publish on the Spider-Man game update by Gameloft I noticed that they also released Eternal Legacy HD for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game is a sweet and immersive RPG for the PlayBook. I am running to another event so I did not get a chance to try it out myself but it gets some pretty sweet reviews on other platforms. You can pick up External Legacy HD for the PlayBook for $6.99 in App World. Just keep in mind it clocks in at almost 500MB. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

PlayBook OS 2.0 Browser Adds “Reader View” for Easy Reading Posted: 18 Oct 2011 03:08 PM PDT While the PlayBook does a sweet job of browsing the web there are some sites that are cluttered on the device or meant for huge 22 inch monitors. RIM seems to be joining the crowd with their own take on a Reader View in the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta. This beta has a new feature once a page loads in the browser that lets you extract the main text and images from the page for easy viewing. It works better in portrait but hopefully RIM will fix it to take the whole screen in landscape mode. All you need to do to enable the view is hit the new book like icon in BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 when the page loads. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Salesforce HTML5 App Preview – Groupon & Salesforce Adding BBM Integration Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:41 PM PDT Salesforce is working on adding an HTML5 mobile app for their service and it looks like its coming. They just gave a demo of it running in the PlayBook browser and it looks great. They are working on a WebWorks version of it but they need to find a way to wipe it remotely. They also stood up with Groupon and showed off BBM integration with their apps. Groupon let you chat or share a deal over BBM and Salesforce is adding it to Chatter. Here is the Groupon BlackBerry app with BBM integration: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM FINALLY Removes Registration From Developer Downloads!!! Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:35 PM PDT I forgot to mention earlier that one of the biggest changes with the new microsites for all developers is they finally got a bit less annoying. I love the design but they have finally removed the registration requirement from BlackBerry developer downloads. According to Alec Saunders you will NO LONGER have to fill in fake registration information every time you want to download a BlackBerry development tool. They promised this was happening awhile back and I have to say I am happy it has finally come true. I always wondered if anybody ever read those registrations… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Shows Off Android PlayBook APK Repackaging (Aka Porting) Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:26 PM PDT We know that any Android developer can now start porting or better yet repackaging their Android APK files into apps that are easy to submit to App World. RIM showed off a simple app like Pulse but the took things a few steps further. They showed off an OpenGL game like Pool Break Pro that worked like a charm on the PlayBook. They also showed off IMDB working just by repackaging the APK file without any recompiling. They showed off how it plugs in right with the Android tools with a RIM Eclipse plugin that just adds the ability to repackage into a Bar file and signing. Definitely something all Android devs should take a look at. Especially since it ties into all of the existing tools that Android devs already use. Check out the microsite for the PlayBook Android Runtime if you are interested in more! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta Includes WebGL, Flash 11, & AIR 3.0 Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:12 PM PDT RIM mentioned during the keynote that Flash 11 and AIR 3.0 are in the PlayBook preview built of OS 2.0. These new versions of Flash and AIR allow for slick GPU accelerated 3D games as you can see in the screenshots below they were showing off. Pretty slick for Flash. They also showed off WebGL on the PlayBook browser which you see above but what they didn't say was that the PlayBook developer beta that was opened up today includes WebGL support for developers to test out. That means 3D games in the browser without Flash! I think that is a first for any mobile platform. Pretty slick! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

HTML5 Devs Get Dedicated Microsite – WebWorks v2.2 Released Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:04 PM PDT RIM launched a brand new HTML5 development site to highlight their focus on BlackBerry web development as a platform. The new site is actually very nice and clean which really impressed me. You can check out the new site at: https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/html5/ The other interesting thing is that RIM has integrated Ripple into their dev lifecycle and are really talking about it as a way to build and package your applications from Ripple. Very slick I have to say! They have also released WebWorks v2.2 for both smartphones and tablets. Some nice features in there that you can find in the release notes. Devs: Open & Astonishing Native SDK Cascades UI Framework Coming by End of November Posted: 18 Oct 2011 11:50 AM PDT Update: From what I am hearing RIM is calling this the NDK v2.0 RIM dropped this little bit during The Astonishing Tribe demonstration. They mentioned that the Native SDK is getting The Astonishing Tribe Cascades 3D UI framework built into the OS in a beta in November. I am not sure when that means it will be available for end users but my guess is that is when PlayBook OS 2.0 launches… This is part of RIM's new big BBX Open Source Initiative. They are also calling it the Open & Astonishing Native SDK for the work The Astonishing Tribe is adding with Cascades built into the PlayBook. Its very cool what they are doing letting any developer create immersive physics based dynamic animations without having to have any experience with doing that yourself. Cascades also has a plugin for Photoshop to make it easier for developers to work with designers in creating the elements they need and slices or them. They were showing off some very cool visualizations for apps. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BBX Open Source Initiative – RIM Helping Devs Find Native SDK Open Libraries Posted: 18 Oct 2011 11:36 AM PDT RIM has made a huge push to help bring more open source libraries and frameworks to the PlayBook for native developers. This is to make it easier for developers to find assets they can easily use in their apps. There are some great libraries RIM has already added and confirmed for the native SDK at: http://BlackBerry.com.github.com/NDK If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

ShiVa 3D Game Engine Built on Marmalade Now Available Posted: 18 Oct 2011 11:22 AM PDT RIM mentioned that a new game engine is now available for the PlayBook. It is called ShiVa and is actually built on the Marmalade SDK for mobile ports. Their Mobile Application suite now works on the PlayBook due to the Marmalade port. A future update will soon have the ability to directly port to the PlayBook but for now it is supposedly still possible just not as easily through Marmalade. Read up on ShiVa 3D at this link. They even announced a massively multiplayer game Earth and Legend coming for the PlayBook through this 3D game engine. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Clarification: Adobe AIR/Flash Apps & Android Player Apps to Run on BBX Posted: 18 Oct 2011 11:10 AM PDT Alec Saunders did not mention Adobe AIR/Flash apps or apps built on the Android Player when it came to their future BBX strategy. I have been trying to confirm this since Alec said that but it looks like he might have just missed it off his slide. RIM's BBX press release says that:
Hopefully that settles that but it looks like BlackBerry Java is still nowhere to be seen. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Alec Saunders Addresses His Top 3 BlackBerry Development Myths Posted: 18 Oct 2011 10:46 AM PDT Alec Saunders, RIM's new VP of developer relations, had some fun on stage today trying to dispel some BlackBerry development myths. The first three hit things right on the head though you can get stats to say whatever you want. On the other hand he does have a point with the fourth myth that it is too had to develop for BlackBerry once you look beyond BlackBerry Java apps. RIM Explains BBX OS Strategy – Native SDK & HTML5 Apps Will Be forwards Compatible Posted: 18 Oct 2011 10:25 AM PDT Guarantee for BlackBerry developers. Any app created in HTML5 or any Native app for the PlayBook will work on future BBX devices. That means any developer that currently creates a HTML5, WebWorks, or Native SDK app will run on future BBX devices and current devices. They were not that clear about Adobe AIR/Flash though it does seem conspicuously missing. RIM is not showing anything about a new phone but they are definitely hinting in that direction. It looks like the device is not going to be shown today but you never know with RIM. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
