Review: Trident Perseus Case for Playbook Posted: 26 Oct 2011 02:52 PM PDT Price: $24.95 If you are looking for a lightweight protection for your Playbook, look no more. The Perseus from Trident Case is a great companion for your tablet. The product comes with two parts. The main part is the rubberized silicone case which covers all sides, except the screen. The case provides good protection from minor impacts. As an added bonus, it also provides a better grip. Trident Case didn't forget to protect your screen as well, which is the second part – a scratch/smudge resistant screen protector. Also included in the package was a lint free cleaning cloth, an application card to install the screen protector and instructions: The case fits snuggly around the Playbook. You have to keep in mind, the protection it provides is a light-duty one. It will protect well from little bumps, but if you drop the device from couple of feet onto a hard surface, it may not be sufficient. Also, screen is protected against scratches, but it being open otherwise makes me worry about using the case daily. The ports are fully open and are easily accessible. Of course you wouldn't be able to use a cradle when the device is in the case. The little nubs on top of the power/volume buttons make them easier to access as well. One funny thing I noticed, the instructions are from their iPhone version, I am guessing the product was a little bit rushed: Overall, it is an inexpensive light duty case plus screen protector combo. It is lightweight and doesn't add bulk. Pros:
Cons:

Android Games Start Showing Up in App World for PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta Devices? Posted: 26 Oct 2011 01:58 PM PDT It looks like RIM's tonnage of apps are coming to the PlayBook even before RIM's current promise of a February 2012 PlayBook OS 2.0 release. Don pointed out to me that Second Gear Games has released Shopper's Paradise HD for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0+ devices. This game seems to be a port of their Android game and runs just fine in the PlayBook Android player. I guess this is what RIM means about Android apps not looking any different in App World except for requiring OS 2.0+.The amazing part is that the game is less than two megabytes… Features include:
You can pick up Shopper's Paradise HD in App World now for $2.99 if you have a PlayBook running the OS 2.0 beta. Let us know if you spot more! RIM Makes NewBay Cloud Service Provider Acquisition Official Posted: 26 Oct 2011 12:11 PM PDT We heard before that RIM had acquired NewBay Software out of Dublin, Ireland but RIM had yet to publicly confirm it. My guess is that the financial terms were not closed beyond the agreement which is why they waited to officially mention it. Now RIM's Alan Brenner, SVP of the BlackBerry Platform, has confirmed on the official BlackBerry Blog that NewBay is part of RIM. NewBay has also posted a similar message on their homepage www.newbay.com. Here is what RIM had to say about the acquisition:
It could be this is what RIM was talking about when they pointed out BBX BlackBerry Cloud Services building block in their future strategy at DevCon. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM released an update to the BlackBerry Java SDK and JDE v7.0 in their latest maintenance release. This new release is not a huge update but has some goodies according to RIM. They did not put up a separate change log I can find but it includes:

Polarbit Releases Badaboo, Reckless Getaway, & Family Pack Games for the PlayBook Posted: 26 Oct 2011 09:36 AM PDT Polarbit is on a roll with their BlackBerry PlayBook game releases. Their latest three are some slick games that look like they were developed with the native SDK though not quite on par with the top of the line games. More like somewhere between Flash and Native. My favorite currently from them is Badaboo which is an addictive puzzle game. The Family Pack game also is nice since it includes 7 games in one including pool and more. Here are the latest 3 titles: Reckless Getaway – $2.99 in App WorldBadaboo – $2.99 in App WorldFamily Pack All in One – $3.99 in App WorldIf you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BBX Smartphones to Have Same Pixel Density as BlackBerry PlayBook? Posted: 26 Oct 2011 07:40 AM PDT I was going through my notes from DevCon last week and I remembered something that Alec Saunders, RIM's new head of Developer Relations, said in a response to a question I asked. I asked the panel at this press only session how easy it would be to run current BlackBerry PlayBook Flash, Native, or Android apps on future BBX phones. He responded that RIM is doing everything they can to ensure that the BBX platform phones have the same Pixel Density as the BlackBerry PlayBook. I tried pushing further but all he would say was that they should run just fine or would take a few simple tweaks. Keep in mind pixel density does not mean the same thing as having the same 1024px x 600px resolution as the PlayBook from what I understand. Trying to simplify it (Thanks Wikipedia), pixel density is a measurement related by the size of the display in inches and the total number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions. From my calculations the pixel density of the PlayBook is about 170 which is not bad compared to the iPad which has about a 130px density due to the larger screen. Still it would be a huge boon for BBX phones if apps and games designed for the PlayBook could just as easily run on BBX phones without any changes. What do you think? BlackBerry Bold 9900 & Curve 9360 Get MasterCard PayPass Certification Posted: 26 Oct 2011 07:26 AM PDT RIM announced this morning that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 are now the "World’s First SIM-Based Smartphones to Receive MasterCard PayPass Handset Certification." That is not to shabby for RIM since these devices are freshly launched. France Telecom Orange is the first carrier to benefit from the certification and plans to use the NFC features for contactless payments. Check out the quotes below from Orange, RIM, & MasterCard:
BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 Are World’s First SIM-Based Smartphones to Receive MasterCard PayPass Handset Certification - Carriers globally will now have access to the first NFC smartphones certified as MasterCard PayPass(TM) approved devices WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Oct. 26, 2011) – Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced the BlackBerry(R) Bold(TM) 9900 and BlackBerry(R) Curve(TM) 9360 smartphones are the first SIM-based NFC smartphones to be certified by MasterCard Worldwide as PayPass-approved devices. The certification was granted on the basis of the BlackBerry(R) smartphones meeting the functionality, interoperability and security requirements of MasterCard. With this certification, any MasterCard PayPass-issuing bank globally will be able to deploy MasterCard PayPass-enabled accounts to the SIM card of these smartphones. The ecosystem to allow customers to take advantage of the certified BlackBerry smartphones for NFC payments is already growing. France Telecom – Orange believes that mobile NFC has the potential to enable a new revolution in mobile by further connecting people’s mobile digital world with the physical world around them. France Telecom – Orange is the first operator worldwide to have commercial NFC launches in two countries, UK and France, with trials in several European markets. Clearer Pictures of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 Show Off The Hybrid Device Posted: 26 Oct 2011 06:40 AM PDT The blurry pic we saw yesterday of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 did not do the device justice. Bla1ze over @CrackBerry spotted some new pictures of the device and they make it look like sort of a cross hybrid of the Bold 9900, Torch 9850, and Bold 9700 styles along with some Curve thrown in. The buttons look nicer than I expected though I am not sure why RIM changed them from the 9700. They keyboard is more like the 9900 and the back and buttons look like the Torch 9850 with a flat back like the Curve models. The charging port has also been moved to the bottom and the device is packing a 5MP autofocus camera and feels lighter than previous models. What do you think of these latest pics? Love it or hate it? If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Patito Games Offers Multiplayer BBM Gaming App Starting with Tic Tac Toe & Battleship Posted: 26 Oct 2011 05:37 AM PDT ZarapeSoft let us know about their new BlackBerry gaming app called PatitoGames that they released recently. The app is actually a collection of three games with two more coming soon. Right now there is a multiplayer version of tic-tac-toe along with two variants of Battleship. They also have checkers and reversi coming soon. All of the games are playable against your friends through BBM or through random matchups online. Very cool concept from what I can tell and something I am hoping RIM will do in the future with their Scoreloop acquisition on the PlayBook. You can pick up PatitoGames free in App World here If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
