Kik Cross Platform Messenger is Back for BlackBerrys Posted: 07 Oct 2011 02:31 AM PDT Kik made a name for themselves as a pretty solid cross platform IM client similar to BBM. They got into some serious business with RIM ending up with feuding lawsuits and RIM pulling Kik's code signing keys. Terry let us know that Kik is now back and sent out an email to their BlackBerry users about a new Kik version for BlackBerry. It seems like this version is a J2ME app which does not require BlackBerry code signing keys but means it will have very little integration with the rest of the BlackBerry OS. On the other hand it lets Kik make a statement like:
You can pick up this version at www.kik.com/jme If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Smartphone Models and their Codenames in One Chart (FAQ) Posted: 06 Oct 2011 02:51 PM PDT I cannot count the times that I have been asked for a chart of the different BlackBerry models and the codenames associated with them. I finally got some free time on the train earlier this week and started compiling a list of the codenames I remembered off the top of my head. They should all be right but I am counting on all of you to keep me honest. There are also new unannounced models like the upcoming Curve "All Touch" Malibu (CDMA) and others that are not 100% confirmed yet but let us know in the comments if we missed any. I am also blanking on the codename for the original BlackBerry Bold 9900… Check out the full chart below:

Sweet “Let’s Golf 2 HD” PlayBook Native SDK Game Released by Gameloft Posted: 06 Oct 2011 12:48 PM PDT If I am not mistaken Let's Golf 2 HD is Gameloft's first foray into BlackBerry PlayBook games and they are coming with a splash. This game seems to be developed on the BlackBerry PlayBook Native SDK and clocks in at a whopping ~200MB download. The game is actually pretty sweet and has great 3D modeling that lets you customize your golfer as you improve. Features include:
Let's Golf 2 HD is available in App World for $6.99 – Thanks Edwin for the tip!!!You can check out a demo of the same game for Android below: Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video LinkIf you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Mike Lazaridis & Jim Balsillie Statement on Steve Jobs Posted: 06 Oct 2011 10:18 AM PDT The whole world seems a bit shook up today and condolences for Steve Jobs have been flowing in from every corner. RIM's co-CEO's Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie also had a statement on Steve Jobs passing. Here is what they said via CityTV/WSJ:
There are quite a few interesting stories being shared about Steve Jobs. I recommend checking out Techmeme today for most of the stories. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Fixmo Tools v2.5 Released! Free Update for Current v2.0 Users Posted: 06 Oct 2011 08:58 AM PDT Fixmo let us know that they have launched Fixmo Tools v2.5 which is a nice new enhancement to the previous Fixmo Tools v2.0. The nice part is that it is a totally free update for owners of Fixmo Tools v2.0! This new version brings along some serious updates including support for BlackBerry 7 and the ability to remove any of the 18 subapps that you don't need. My favorite feature is a new app to conserve Wi-Fi. I have been using it stand alone for months and I LOVE IT! There are other tools that turn your Wi-Fi on and off based on the cellphone tower you are connected to but Fixmo managed to get simplicity down. It simply works… Features of Fixmo Tools v2.5 include:
You can pick up Fixmo Tools v2.5 in App World now for $7.99 and hopefully in the store for those of you who purchased it from there once they get the update live. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

NASDAQ Releases Free QFolio NASDAQ OMX Portfolio Manager for PlayBook Posted: 06 Oct 2011 08:40 AM PDT
NASDAQ just released one of the slickest stock market apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The app gives you access to tons of information from the NASDAQ exchange. Sadly it is limited to NASDAQ only for obvious reasons but we can hope. On the other hand the app is the slickest real time stock portfolio app I have seen for the PlayBook so far. It gives you free access to unlimited real time quotes, pre-market and after hours activity, charting, and an exclusive custom heat map. Check out QFolio in App World now! BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 Commercial Posted by RIM Posted: 06 Oct 2011 08:27 AM PDT RIM has put up a commercial for their new BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 this week. The commercial shows off some of the features of the device as RIM's redeeming all touch BlackBerry. Hopefully the QNX touch BlackBerrys really help RIM take off in the space. I am kind of digging the fact that RIM is finally showing off the features of the phone in commercials instead of more esoteric stuff. QNX Connected BMW X5 Shows Up at Auto Summit Japan Posted: 06 Oct 2011 07:33 AM PDT Since RIM acquired QNX they have been showing off cars powered or connected with QNX. Originally they were showing a 2009 Corvette and then they added a BMW roadster. Now Alex Kinsella posted some pictures of a QNX connected BMW X5 which looks pretty slick. I am really curious to see where RIM and QNX are going with these QNX powered cars and any tie in with BlackBerry devices in the real world. BMW cars have usually been dominated with iPod and iOS support but who knows maybe QNX will be powering them in the future… Who knows RIM does have a trademark on BlackBerry Drive. Maybe we could have a BlackBerry BBX Drive! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.07.3312 Fixes Adobe Flash Vulnerability Posted: 06 Oct 2011 07:17 AM PDT RIM has pushed out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS bringing it to OS v1.07.3312. This version is now available and addresses a vulnerability that Adobe announced in Flash on September 21st that could potentially cause issues for devices that support Flash though no exploits are currently documented. Users running OS v1.0.7.2942 will get an update that will only include this Adobe Flash update and should take only a few minutes to install. This is because of the piecemeal updates RIM allowed for in the last update which should make subsequent updates much easier. So what are you waiting for? Hit that "check for updates" button now! Elemental Wars Marmalade SDK RPG Game for the PlayBook Posted: 06 Oct 2011 06:53 AM PDT We told you yesterday that Elemental Wars was in the process of being ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. It looks like they made some quick work of it since Robtanz let us know that it is already available in App World. Elemental wars is a turn based tactical game with a RPG style flavor with characters and spells learning. The graphics are really nice thanks to the Marmalade SDK's capabilities. The idea of the game is to cast spells between the towers of the mages while building your skills. Features include:
You can pick up Elemental Wars for your PlayBook for only $1.99 in App World If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry App World Hits 45,000+ Apps, Games, & Themes Posted: 06 Oct 2011 06:02 AM PDT Alex pointed out to us earlier this week that App World now has 45,000+ items available. That is a nice ramp up though I am sure they would want to hit 50,000+ for DevCon but that is probably not going to happen. The break down between the three categories for Apps, Themes, & Games works like this:
Something tells me the Android Player for the PlayBook is going to change those numbers drastically. On the other hand I don't like reading too much into the numbers. Like the many other app stores, App World suffers from spam apps that really don't belong together with apps or are duplicates of the same app. For example, 12,223 of items in the "Apps" category are in the Reference & eBooks section which translates into 10,659 eBooks in an App Store. In other words there are more than twice as many eBooks than games… I saw one eBook dev split up a book into three parts just to make it three apps… Either way congrats to the App World team on hitting some more tonnage. Now we just need to boil down those apps to actually useful apps and forget the numbers… If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
