NYC PlayBook Event Promo Video and Funny BBM Commercial

BlackBerry PlayBook NYC Event

I have to commend the Team BlackBerry YouTube team for collecting some great video content in the last few months. Their latest additions include a video of a BlackBerry PlayBook event I attended in NYC last week which could easily be turned into a TV commercial. There are some nice visuals of the PlayBook in action so check it out.

The second video is an Airtel commercial from India where dorm boys are using their BlackBerrys to communicate while their warden wonders what is going on. Kind of funny but I did not see any blinking green LED lights… :)

BlackBerry GSM 2011 Roadmap Leaks with Bold Touch, Torch 2, and Next Gen Curve

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 04:00 PM PST

BlackBerry GSM 2011 Roadmap devices

I am loving all these recent leaks of the RIM device roadmaps. We have already seen quite a bit about the upcoming CDMA lineup but we only had a general idea of the GSM lineup. Now thanks to N4BB we have a leaked slide of the 2011 GSM BlackBerry roadmap though it looks like it may be T-Mobile specific.

The slide shows the PlayBook coming out sometime around April which could be simply the GSM 3G version of the device or the launch of the PlayBook. It has the next generation Curve lined up for a July release along with a Bold Touch coming sometime in end of May or June. Also in the roadmap is the Torch 2 which is listed as "under consideration" but that could just be under consideration on if it will be launched T-Mobile.

All of these phones on the roadmap are rumored to be running OS 6.1 which is not the QNX based OS of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Hopefully the next gen devices will get the QNX treatment.

What do you think of these dates? I cannot wait to be getting the Bold Touch in May if RIM makes that date!

BlackBerry PlayBook Music Store and Podcasts App on Video!

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:07 PM PST

BlackBerry PlayBook Music Store 7Digital

News of the BlackBerry PlayBook shipping with a 7Digital Music Store and BlackBerry Podcasts application dropped today. RIM was kind enough to catch both apps on video for all of us to drool over. Check out the video demo below.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

Their BlackBerry Insider Blog also collected some key information on both of the apps from the BlackBerry PlayBook project manager Ryan Bidan who highlighted the following features:

7digital Music Store:

  • 7digital Music Store offers over 13 million songs, and tracks are available at prices starting as low as $0.79 with bitrates up to 320 kbps (DRM free).
  • As Ryan mentioned, 7digital Music Store content is stored in the cloud via a digital music locker for easy portability across devices and to help against accidental loss.
  • 7digital Music Store includes a recommendation engine that features content based upon recent browsing and purchase activity.

BlackBerry Podcasts:

  • The BlackBerry Podcasts app for the BlackBerry PlayBook includes 19 content categories, ranging from sports to entertainment to business, including popular content such as the New Yorker and Ask A Ninja podcasts (two of my personal favorites!).
  • BlackBerry Podcasts allow users to preview an episode before downloading or subscribing to it, and it automatically downloads new podcasts for subscribed channels.

So what do you think of both apps?

PS: Dear RIM, can we please get a video of the release date next time? :)

BlackBerry Podcasts App Coming to BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:02 PM PST

BlackBerry PlayBook Podcasts

To round out RIM's inclusion of the 7Digital Music Store on the PlayBook we now have BlackBerry Podcasts. RIM has confirmed that the BlackBerry Podcasts app will come preinstalled on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It will let you easily "find and browse content, as well as quickly and easily subscribe to favorite channels."

BlackBerry PlayBook users will be able to browse top podcast episodes by download or search through 19 content categories, including sports, entertainment, business and more. Other features of the PlayBook Podcasts app include:

  • Episode Preview – Preview Audio and Video Podcast episodes before they are downloaded
  • High Fidelity Viewing – Video podcasts will be delivered in their native resolution (up to 1080p), allowing full realization of the BlackBerry PlayBook's high fidelity 7-inch 1024×600 screen
  • Delivery – Subscriptions will update when the application is open – then just click to listen or watch the latest podcasts
  • Preferences Users can control their download preferences – from number of episodes, to retain, to explicit content filters

RIM will be showing off the BlackBerry Podcasts app at SXSW conference. I am really liking how the consumer experience on the BlackBerry PlayBook is rounding out. RIM now has most bases covered with Podcasts and a music store. Now all they need is a video rental/purchase system.

FAQ: How to Reset a BlackBerry or Remove an IT Policy Using a Mac or PC

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 12:41 PM PST

Desktop Manager Mac

I was stuck in an interesting situation yesterday and thought I would share what I learned. My friend decided to dump his hosted BES service for BlackBerry Protect now that it is out but he had to get rid of the BES IT Policy on his BlackBerry Tour 9630. Usually that is no problem since there are many tools that will let you do it from your PC like BBMCP, Vnbbutils, BBSAK, etc. The issue was the lack of a Windows PC anywhere in sight.

I decided to do some digging and found out that at least with the latest BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.0 for Mac you can reset a BlackBerry to factory settings from the command line. Reminds me of how we used to have to do it on a PC. I found the answer in some documentation I had lying around but a friend pointed out to me that RIM has the instructions in their knowledge base. Supposedly it can only be done on devices with OS 4.3 through 5.0 but I didn't have an OS 6.0 device to test it on.

Here is how you do it according to RIM's official guide. Keep in mind you MUST perform a backup since you will be resetting your BlackBerry to factory defaults:

  1. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, if it is open.
  2. On the Mac computer, open Terminal.
  3. Type cd /Applications/BlackBerry\ Desktop\ Software.app/Contents/MacOS/ and press ENTER.
  4. Type ./bbdm resettofactory

Note: If the smartphone has a password, type the following command replacing <password> with the password for the smartphone.

    ./bbdm -password <password> resettofactory

That should be it for a Mac. If you are on a PC I highly recommend checking out the easy to use BBMCP, Vnbbutils, or BBSAK but if you must here are the command line instructions from RIM if you have Desktop Manager installed:

Remove the IT policy using the loader.exe application included with BlackBerry® Desktop Manager 4.7 to 6.0 on a Windows® based computer.

Important: This method can only be used on BlackBerry smartphones that are running BlackBerry Device Software 4.3 to 6.0.

Note: When using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.6 or earlier, the loader.exe application can be updated by going to www.blackberry.com/update and installing the software when prompted.

Warning: This procedure deletes all data on the BlackBerry smartphone. Back up the data before performing this procedure. For more information on how to back up data, see KB12487.

  1. Connect the smartphone to the computer.
  2. From the Start menu, click Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Note: When a computer running Windows Vista™ or Windows 7 is used, the user might need to right-click the Command Prompt application and choose Run as administrator.

  3. Find the Apploader folder by typing cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and then pressing ENTER.

Note: For computers using a 64-bit version of Windows, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader

  4. Type loader.exe /resettofactory
  5. Type the BlackBerry smartphone password if prompted.

RIM Offers Three Tips for Shooting Video on Your BlackBerry

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 11:04 AM PST

article04_04 article04_01

I do not shoot video often on my BlackBerry but my brother uses it all the time to "capture the moment" with his toddler. For this months BlackBerry Connection newsletter RIM shared three tips for how to shoot better video on your BlackBerry. Some of them are elementary for regular users but its still a good refresher. Check the tips out at this link and let us know if you have your own video or camera tips to share!

Anybody else hoping that the BlackBerry PlayBook will bring on device video and picture editing? I could see a fun watered down version of GIMP running on there…

BlackBerry PlayBook Hockey DrillBook App for Coaches

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 08:58 AM PST

drillbook4 drillbook1

I am dying to catch a picture of some real coaches using a BlackBerry PlayBook as an actual PlayBook. A new BlackBerry developer, Joey, let us know about an update to his Hockey DrillBook app for coaches. It turns out that this latest update was based on suggestions from a thread in our forums which provided Joey an unbiased look and suggestions for improving the app. I think this is a perfect example of how developers take a look at your comments and forum threads and take that feedback seriously if you write it in a constructive way.

drillbook2 drillbook3

The updated version of Hockey DrillBook is not up in App World for me as of now but here is a brief description of the app and the additional new features which should be live at this link soon:

Now with over 50 drills in over 15 different categories, this app will help your team on their way to victory! Each drill is presented in stunning high quality on your BlackBerry PlayBook, and you can quickly and easily display different drills to your players.
NEW FEATURE: Hockey News! Keep up to date with all the latest news, stats, and scores in the Hockey News section! See who’s stepping up, who’s falling apart, and how each team is being coached to victory!
NEW FEATURE: Draw-A-Drill! This heavily requested feature will now let you draw drills in real time to so you can show all your players, fellow coaches, or even teammates how to dominate the opposition! With the HDMI out included with your PlayBook, you can hook up Hockey DrillBook to your HD TV and give your team the ultimate advantage!
Note: More drills are on their way, including lots of new features that will give you the edge on your competition! Everyone needs a PlayBook in their life, and Hockey DrillBook is your PlayBook to victory!
Cost: $1.99

PS: What really warms my heart was what Joey said in his email:

As you can probably guess, I’m the developer of this app and have just included some pretty big updates. As a first time developer, it was scary to think of what people might say, and the BerryReview forum was the first place where my app got an unbiased look at it. Based on feedback I had read on your forum, I structured and modified my update schedule to address concerns that had been raised.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for the great and positive feedback on your forum!

Targus is not a name that is synonymous with BlackBerry accessories but in the mobile computing market they are huge. They have announced their entry into RIM's new "Built for BlackBerry" program starting off with the highly anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook. They will be starting their accessory line with

Truss Leather and Truss Nylon Case/Stand. The Truss provides a dual solution, acting both as a carrying case and transformable hands-free viewing stand. The leather Truss will be available in three color schemes of black with blue interior; black with a black interior and brown with an orange interior at an MSRP of $44.99. The Nylon Truss will be available in black with a red interior and black with charcoal interior at an MSRP of $34.99.

The portfolio-style Zierra Leather Case, designed to mimic a billfold, contains room for your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet plus business cards, credit cards, photos, notes and a pen. It will be available in two color schemes: Black with a burgundy interior and red with brown interior at an MSRP of $54.99.

No word on when the two cases will be available but they will be sold through Targus.com along with other resellers.

Foursquare 3.0 Coming “Soon” to BlackBerry

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 06:55 AM PST

Foursquare BlackBerry

I always get a little annoyed when the BlackBerry version of apps is not released along with new features on other mobile platforms. This just happened with Foursquare's v3.0 rollout but N4BB noticed Foursquare is at least promising that a upcoming build will be coming this week. That build will "put the pieces in place" for them to move a "little" quicker which is somewhat promising.

When the new build comes out you should be able to pick up the latest beta of Foursquare for BlackBerry at this link. Until then you can ask the proverbial question of When will then be now?

Rumor: RIM Ditched Marvell for TI Six Months into the BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 05:55 AM PST

Screen shot 2011-01-09 at 5.13.32 PM

We know that RIM has been working on the BlackBerry PlayBook for quite awhile but TechEye snagged an interesting historical rumor. According to one of their sources, a Marvell employee, RIM was working with Marvell for over six months before they ditched Marvell to go with Texas Instruments. As some of you know this was a huge change for RIM since they have been using Marvell chipsets in their GSM phones for years now.

It turns out that Marvell was having quite a bit of trouble getting their hardware to work with the QNX OS and software. According to this source:

"Marvell was having some serious problems getting the software to work with the hardware. The team was just taking too long and there were issues that weren't being resolved quickly enough,"

This rumor fits in nicely with what we are hearing about Marvell lowering their projections as a major client targets entry level smartphones. It also somewhat jives with previous rumors that RIM was working on a Tablet model and then scrapped the plans to start afresh setting them about 6 months back. I will be really pissed if I learn that Marvell was the reason the BlackBerry PlayBook took awhile to launch.
