imageThe BlackBerry Curve 9300 just got some nice OS love today with OS 6.0.0.499 thanks to N4BB. I am not sure how popular the 9300 has been but OS updates seem to hint that many carriers are rolling it out. Let us know how the OS is in the comments if you install it!

Download the BlackBerry Curve 9300 OS 6.0.0.499 at:

Hackers Exploit BlackBerry 6 WebKit Browser – Steal Contacts and Images!

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 05:30 PM PST

chaos-erupts-newspaper

UPDATE: I forgot to note that RIM will probably issue a OS fix or update for this issue. Problem is RIM has shot themselves in the foot in this regard and will probably have to wait for each carrier to certify the OS before they can release the potentially critical OS update. I know RIM has been working on being able to do smaller OS updates without a full update but they have yet to do one.

I never thought the day would happen. The brand new BlackBerry WebKit browser has been exploited in a drive-by-download attack at the Pwn2Own contest this year. Three hackers, Vincenzo Iozzo, Willem Pinckaers and Ralf Philipp Weinmann, used a combination of an information disclosure bug and a integer overflow flaw to break into a BlackBerry Torch and steal the contact list and the image database. These are the same guys that won last year for hacking the iPhone.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 hacked

The hack was done on a BlackBerry Torch 9800 running a much older OS 6.0.0.246 but the security researchers say it also works against the latest OS versions. Kind of scary right? The WebKit browser is one of RIM's first forays into Open Source software on the BlackBerry and this is one of the harder security problems with open source. What is really impressive is that they managed to get past the browser and into the Java virtual machine to extract information. They used the information leakage bug to see parts of the device memory to figure out how to exploit the device.

According to ZDNet, RIM's security response team was on hand while the hack was going on and their director of security response, Adrian Stone, said he would work to confirm if the vulnerability still exists in the latest OS. Stone had this to say to ZDNet: "It happens.  It's not what you want but there's no such thing as zero code defects."

I agree with Stone but it is pretty crazy that the BlackBerry browser was exploited and had no security beyond that. This seems to point to an issue of the BlackBerry having security by obscurity since not many people know the inner workings on the BlackBerry Java virtual machine behind the app layer.

Check out more details on the exploit over at ZDNet. My mind is still reeling from the news and I expect we will be hearing an announcement from RIM soon…

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 01:54 PM PST

PlayBook FCC BlackBerry

The BlackBerry PlayBook just got one step closer to its launch with the FCC's official stamp of approval today. Engadget spotted all three variants, 16GB 32GB and 64GB, on the FCC site. Most of the information is still confidential until RIM lets it out but we hopefully will see the device sooner rather than later.

PlayBook FCC BlackBerry2

Anybody else hoping for a March release? Please RIM just put us out of our misery and announce a launch date already!

BlackBerry Wallet v1.2 Released – Brings the Free App Back to Life!

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:59 PM PST

 BlackBerry Wallet3 BlackBerry Wallet

I have been kind of pissed at RIM for slowly letting their BlackBerry Wallet app die. Last time I checked it had not been updated since 2009 but that all changed today. Jason let us know that RIM has updated the BlackBerry Wallet app to v1.2. It seems like this new version is for OS 6.0 devices only but packs a whole slew of new options and a nice visual UI overhaul. There are even some features that they really need to explain like Wireless Synchronization whatever that does!!!

BlackBerry Wallet2  BlackBerry Wallet4

The app lets you securely store:

  • Addresses
  • Login credentials – Will log you in from the browser!
  • Credit Cards
  • Gift Cards
  • Loyalty cards
  • Other items

You can also use the app to help you generate strong passwords and remind you when a credit card is expiring. All in all a sweet update! You can pick it up in App World at this link or directly at www.blackberry.com/wallet. Let us know what you think!

Starbucks Card Mobile app Adds BlackBerry Torch 9800 Support

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:55 AM PST

Starbucks blackberry2' Starbucks blackberry1

It was a snafu that Starbucks did not support the flagship BlackBerry Torch 9800 when they launched their app but they have corrected the mistake. Starbucks announced support for the Torch on their blog at this link. While not a Starbucks addict myself I can kind of understand the use of the app so if you are hooked on Starbucks and have a Torch you can pick up the app these ways:

Will The PlayBook Have a Native Video Store or Service?

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:03 AM PST

YouTube on the BlackBerry PlayBook

RIM made two announcements yesterday rounding out the BlackBerry PlayBook offering. The announced that it will ship preloaded with 7Digitals Music Store along with a PlayBook version of the BlackBerry Podcasts application. While the Podcasts app does let you watch video podcasts I have been wondering if RIM will integrate a video tie in like a streaming TV or Movie service or even one that sold shows per episode or movies.

In other words I am wondering if an app like Netflix or Amazon's video store would be coming preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Right now the Podcasts and music options cover most of the features from iTunes but the one key thing it is missing is a solid video service even on current BlackBerry smartphones. Hopefully the PlayBook will finally fix that. I am hoping for at least Netflix and Hulu support though both should work in the browser since it has Flash support. Here is to hoping it does since we have already seen YouTube (pictured above) and Vimeo working in the browser.

I know RIM has been showing off the 1080p content playing on the device but I have been really curious to learn where they think we will be getting this professional 1080p content from! (at least legally) So what video service do you want to see on the PlayBook?

Toshl Releases SWEET Expense Tracking app With Cloud Integration

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 06:49 AM PST

toshl3 toshl toshl4

It was only a few days ago when I asked all of our Twitter followers for expense tracking app suggestions. @MaticBitenc let us know that Toshl has released their expense tracking solution for BlackBerry today and I am definitely going to try it out. The app syncs its information with the Toshl cloud so your data is backed up unlike other apps that require desktop counterparts or don't backup at all. You simply enter in your expenses and tag them. You can then sync them to the cloud and export them from there.

tosh2l toshl5

I am currently using the free trial but the app supposedly has both a free and pro version available with more features as you can see here. The Pro version is a reasonable $19.95 a year which is not bad.

Here are the features of the initial BlackBerry Toshl app:

  • adding, editing, deleting expenses
  • timeline, tags, detail view
  • currency settings
  • sync with Toshl.com
  • registration & log in for Toshl.com
  • time span
  • tags editing

I have to say I am happy that Toshl has made an emphasis of user interface design with a beautiful looking app. If you want to try it out just head on over to this direct OTA link or read more about the app on the product description page.

PlayBook Coming to Videotron “In the Spring”

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 06:00 AM PST

Videotron is a Quebec, Canada based media company offering phone, internet, tv, and wireless services. They announced yesterday on twitter (yes, its in French) that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be arriving “in the spring.”  That’s great news, but like most PlayBook info we’ve been hearing lately, too vague.

In case you were wondering, the first day of Spring is on the Vernal Equinox, falling on March 21st. The last day of Spring is on June 20th, the day before the Summer Solstice. Kind of a big window. We can only wait and see!

When do you think RIM will finally announce release dates and pricing for the PlayBook?
