Microsoft Offering Free BES Cloud Hosting – RIM to Follow???

 Office 365 Office 365 tagline

The BES and Exchange relationship has been around for years and Microsoft is hoping to really move in on it with their cloud services. Jim let us know Microsoft has announced on their blog that they have cut the BlackBerry BES fee from $10/month per device to $0/month for their Exchange Online BPOS customers. They will also this solution for their upcoming Office 365 solution that is coming out later this year.

I am not sure how much of a traditional BES this is depending on if it leans closer to BES Premium or BES Express. There is the ability to manage device policies, passwords, settings, and other management features.

The thing is that Microsoft has also gone on to detail how RIM will be following suite with their BES cloud solution which will also be compatible with Microsoft's cloud Exchange service. They are also saying that RIM's cloud BES solution is FREE which will be a sweet deal for many companies. RIM could really do regular consumers a solid favor with this by opening this up to 3rd party Exchange hosting services so we can drop the extra $10 these companies charge.

Check out the full details on the Microsoft Office 365 Blog

BlackBerry Traffic Updated to Version 2.0! Available Now in Beta Zone.

Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:25 PM PDT

For all of you BlackBerry Beta Zone members out there, BlackBerry Traffic has received a significant update to version 2.0 and is available for your testing pleasure right now. Remember, only Beta Zone members have access to this.

Keep reading for more details!

Here are some of the features new to version 2.0:

  • Complete UI revamp – You asked for it, you got it.  BlackBerry Traffic 2.0 features new icons, color scheme, 6.0-style theme, and more!
  • Route selection screen – You told us you want more routes to choose from, so we took action.  There are now two route choices (including ETA and trip distance info for each) available to you as soon as you select a destination.
  • Future traffic view – A new future traffic view can be accessed by selecting the current time on the route selection screen, or by flipping through the different views when a route is selected.  This view can be used to determine the best departure time based on predicted traffic conditions.
  • Next maneuver drive view – The simple view has been revised to display the next maneuver with corresponding turn icon in a large, easily viewable font.
  • Search history – Frequent search terms are now available from a drop down on the search screen.
  • Looks like RIM has been listening. The ability to choose between 2 routes will be quite helpful. This was one feature discussed in the comments of this post.

They still haven’t fixed the grammar in their warning that warns if you don’t pay attention, death, serious injury AND property damage may result. All 3? We better pay attention guys. :)

Get BlackBerry Traffic 2.0 from the BB Beta Zone. (login required)

If you want to get in on the app testing action become a member of the Beta Zone! Its a great way to try the latest software and provide extremely valuable feedback to developers.

FAQ: BlackBerry PlayBook Browser is Much Better than Simulator

    Posted: 16 Mar 2011 03:08 PM PDT

    PlayBook Simulator

We know that the BlackBerry Tablet OS built on QNX is a constant work in progress at RIM. I have heard from a few sources that RIM has almost daily OS builds coming out to employee devices. The thing is most users have only had a chance to play with the BlackBerry PlayBook Simulator which is VERY deceiving. For example, RIM recently updated the PlayBook simulator to include the browser with Flash support. The thing is if you try to go to a common Flash site like Facebooks flash games (think Farmville, etc)from the simulator it will crash. On the other hand I know many Facebook apps work like a charm on actual PlayBook devices.

I have yet to get to the source of why the browser on the simulator is not reflective of the actual device but from what I hear RIM is working on it. They even state the following in their release notes to developers:

    BlackBerry PlayBook Browser Known Issues

The only reason I mention this is because I have had a few web/Flash developers ask me why the PlayBook browser sucked on Flash content. Just keep in mind the build RIM is offering us in the simulator is nowhere near the final product or even the OS they currently have on their own devices. RIM will be developing this baby until the last second and actually releasing an OS update that will load up the second you turn on the device when you buy it. So don't fret if you are seeing quirks in the PlayBook simulator. Many of the issues have been fixed in recent builds and RIM plans on pushing out these OS updates without carrier intervention. Lets hope that stays true for the 3G and 4G variants!

RIM has given Adobe Air PlayBook developers some love this week with the release of v0.9.4 of the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK. This new version brings features such as the much needed ability to sign your applications directly from Flash Builder. Now that signing is a requirement for getting into App World its nice to see RIM simplify it a bit. Check out the list below for other new features in this release:

Android’s App Market Threatening Apple for Supremacy

    Posted: 16 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Does the number of apps a smartphone manufacturer offers really matter to consumers? Do we really care about quality over quantity? I would answer: Yes and Probably not. Google has successfully expanded their App Market to the point where they are threatening to overtake the mighty Apple.

I would like to think that the number of apps a certain app vendor has does not affect my opinions, but more options generally means more high quality apps. This speaks to my second question. It doesn’t matter if apps are quality or not. Lately it seems like only the numbers matter.

As you can see from the chart, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 are not even close to challenging the two front runners. But with the possibility of BlackBerry’s (at least the PlayBook for now) being able to run Android apps this is an interesting race to follow.

Check out more charts tracking Android and Apple’s app wars below.

Truesupplier Starts Selling BlackBerry PlayBook OEM Parts

    Posted: 16 Mar 2011 06:56 AM PDT

    PlayBook Parts 2 PlayBook Parts

You can always count on Hong Kong retailer Truesupplier to start selling BlackBerry parts before a device is released. Better yet it gives you an idea of how close we are to a launch date. Zach @TheBerryFix noticed that Truesupplier has started carrier the replacement screen and bezel for the BlackBerry PlayBook. I am hoping I never do anything to my PlayBook to require me to have to replace the screen and bezel but you never know.

    They are carrying the:

They are also carrying a whole line of cases for the PlayBook but they do not seem to be the RIM OEM ones we saw before.

T-Mobile and Sprint Also Waiving Long Distance Calls to Japan

    Posted: 16 Mar 2011 05:55 AM PDT

    T-Mobile Logo Sprint Logo

The top 4 US wireless carriers agree on something. Offering free calling for the next few weeks is a good business move while also a humanitarian one after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. First AT&T and then Verizon offered free calling to Japan and now we also have T-Mobile and Sprint joining the cause. There are slight differences between the carriers but here is the break down for T-Mobile and Sprint:

T-Mobile is offering free long distance calls to Japan for postpaid customers from March 11th until March 31st. They still charge against your minutes for calls. On the other hand if you make the calls over Wi-Fi then the calls are free. T-Mobile is also making SMS messages to and from Japan for post paid customers free during the same time period. More details here.

Sprint on the other hand is being a bit more cryptic about it saying that they are "waiving and/or crediting" fees for wireless calls and text messages to and from Japan for customers from March 11th until April 10th. I am not sure exactly how the waiving or crediting will be done but hopefully you will not have to call in. More details here.

Icon Maker Makes PlayBook Icon Creation Extremely Simple

    Posted: 16 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PDT

    image

I am not a developer by any stretch, but I can see this being a useful app for PlayBook developers who don't want to mess with photo editing software to create icons. Its so easy, even I can do it!

Creating the icon to the right seriously took me all of 30 seconds. Here's what to do:blackberry-tablet-icon

    1. Click 'Load Image'
    2. Select the image you want to use for your icon and click OK
    3. Drag the image to the middle of the work area
    4. Drag the box to the portion of the image you want to use for the icon
    5. Click 'Create Icon'

That's it! My first PlayBook Icon! I feel like a seasoned developer already. Who wants some Angry Zoo? Smile

Try Icon Maker for BlackBerry PlayBook.
