T-Mobile Posts A Letter To Customers Then Removes It

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:08 PM PDT

ScreenHunter_03 Mar. 25 16.58Earlier today T-Mobile issue a letter to T-Mobile customers about the acquisition by AT&t and quickly removes it. I had the site loaded so was able to just read what they had to say.  The link is broken so am thinking they hit publish too early here is the directly link where the material came from.  It will be interesting to see how the companies do damage control with all the customers that aren't necessarily happy with the acquisition whether the deal goes through or not.

T-Mobile letter to customers:

A Letter to Customers Regarding the AT&T Acquisition of T-Mobile USA March 25, 2011

Dear Valued T-Mobile Customers,

As you know, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom have reached an agreement for AT&T to purchase T-Mobile USA.  The combined company will provide you with a world-class platform for mobile broadband innovation and growth.

Bringing together these two world-class businesses will create significant benefits for you. The merger will ensure the deployment of a robust 4G LTE network to 95% of the U.S. population, something neither company would achieve on its own in the timeframe that would be possible with this merger.

Also, because of our compatible networks and infrastructure, you will experience improved voice and data service almost immediately after the networks are integrated.

The transaction must go through a regulatory review and approval process. We expect the review to take approximately twelve months.

Until this deal is closed, T-Mobile remains as an independent competitor to AT&T. During this time, you will continue to receive the great service you have come to expect from T-Mobile and we remain committed to ensuring that you have the best experience possible using T-Mobile products and services.

It continues to be our pleasure and honor to provide you with America's Largest 4G Network and one of the most unique and exciting lineups of smartphones and mobile data products in the industry. We can't thank you enough for choosing T-Mobile, and we promise to continue earning your business every day.

Regards,

Jim Alling

Chief Operations Officer

T-Mobile USA, Inc.

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 02:48 PM PDT

ScreenHunter_02 Mar. 25 16.38

RIM today announced they have added tinyHippos to their BlackBerry family. I have actually used tiny Hippos Ripple application on my Chrome Browser. Not really sure what RIM's Plans are but the company has been a big promoter of widgets in the past. This makes me think RIM will be user their talent to add some of their coolness to the BlackBerry environment including the PlayBook.  Both RIM and tinyHippos have post on their webpages an announcement.  You can read RIM press release here and tinyHippos at this link.

About tinyHippos:

"We are developers, entrepreneurs, and geeks. We have extensive experience in web and mobile widget/web development and we're building tools to help make mobile widget and mobile web development less painful."

RIM has this to say about the acquisition:

Today we are pleased to announce that tinyHippos has joined Research In Motion (RIM). We're excited that the tinyHippos team is joining the BlackBerry Developer team and bringing their expertise in cross-platform emulation environments to the BlackBerry platform.

tinyHippos are the makers of a mobile environment emulator called Ripple and have extensive experience in web and mobile widget/web development. If you are not already familiar with them you can find out more about tinyHippos at http://tinyhippos.com/.

We look forward to working with the team at tinyHippos to further provide a simplified and streamlined experience to our developers.

Thanks to Tashana for the tip.

Review: AGF GRT Shell Case For The Torch 9800

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 11:30 AM PDT

100_7803Most protective cases I have tried for the Torch 9800 have problems with the top piece coming off fairly easy when bumped.  We were sent two  of the new AGF GRT (Glide Rail Technology) shell cases for the Torch 9800 a blue and chrome.

Package: The package sent to us came with two cases  in a chrome and blue top piece the back piece is black.

Case: The case is a two piece that snaps on to make one piece. The coolest factor and what makes this case different from most is their implementation of Glide Rail Technology.

Set up: The case is easy to take off or put on the torch. You simply take the back part place you torch inside and then snap the second top piece into place and put a little pressure and you are ready to go. Am not sure if this is the proper way to take the case off but all you have to do is slide the screen out and push the top piece out from the bottom and it comes right off.

Use: The case does give you device a more bulky look but  something I got used to quick because it protects my device. The case doesn't make it hard to slide the screen out when with one finger.

AT&T Product description:

Glide through life with AGF’s GRT(TM) Case. AGF’s Glide Rail Technology (GRT) case attaches to itself, not your phone, so there’s no need stress over any scratches during installation and removal. AGF’s GRT case is made with two advanced types of plastic. The first is a durable polycarbonate that will protect your phone from dings and scratches. The second is Glide-tech Resin(TM), a super slick material that will ensure your phone opens and closes with ease. Our GRT was engineered to protect your phone’s slider mechanism by allowing it to slide in only two directions, up and down. Best of all, this GRT case comes with two fronts – one in smoked chrome to keep your phone’s fresh out-of-the-box look and a cool dark blue metallic with a soft touch finish. The AGF GRT case is the ultimate way to protect your device while still looking stylish.

My experience using the AGF GRT Case:

Unlike other cases I tested for the Torch 9800  this one fits really good on the it, and taking it off is just as simple. The case stays in place due to the GRT technology in the case  and it is what makes it different from all other type of snap on. AGF has found their way around the difficulty of making snap on cases for this device because some of the others cases I have seen the top piece usually comes off easily or break with wear. The AGF GRT that I have been using for quite a while and dropped a few times and the top pieces is still in good shape.   The back is smooth and provides access to all the convenience keys and ports.

100_7806100_7808

Pros:

  • Easy to snap on and off
  • Good protection
  • Sets itself apart from most of the snap on cases
  • attaches itself not to the device
  • Made out of polycarbonate and Glide-tech resin
  • Does not scratch your device on install or removal
  • Two color combo available blue and chrome
  • Stylish design

Cons:

Some of the charging USB's don't fit snuggly it is still able to charge but you have to make sure the BlackBerry is plugged in correctly while you set it to charge. Other than that I really like the case. Got one for my friend and he is usually very picky with his cases and so far no complains from him.

Check out the promo video below

The cases can be purchased at local AT&T stores and online for $34.99 or through AGF at this link for $29.99. Not sure why the price differences.

Developers: Free BlackBerry PlayBook Offer Ends March 31st!

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 10:29 AM PDT

Developer promotion PlayBook

With all the potential BlackBerry PlayBook developers out there I thought I would post this reminder. RIM's offer for a free BlackBerry PlayBook for developers ends at the end of the month! (unless they extend it again) That means if you have not already submitted your app to App World by March 31st then you will not be eligible. RIM is essentially giving away a $499 device so I would get cracking.

RIM sent out this email to developers yesterday confirming that you only need to submit your app to App World by March 31st 2011 not actually have it accepted by then. That means you have a few days left. I have already submitted my app and I hope it goes through… :)

Here is the full email from RIM:

Hello,

Last call. The BlackBerry® PlayBook™ will be shipping April 19, 2011. As a BlackBerry App World vendor, one can be yours—free of charge—if you submit your BlackBerry PlayBook app by March 31, 2011*.

The BlackBerry App World approval process will not impact your qualification. You just need to submit your application before the March 31, 2011 deadline to remain eligible for the free offer.  Approvals can come after the deadline!  For full details on the Free BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Offer, refer to our terms and conditions. You'll find guidelines for developing an app at the BlackBerry Developer Zone.

We're making it easier than ever to complete your vendor registration so you can qualify for the free offer. Under the new, streamlined registration process for BlackBerry App World vendors you just need to submit a photocopy of any Government Issued ID.

We sincerely appreciate your support of BlackBerry App World and we'll be watching for your BlackBerry PlayBook application with anticipation.

Thanks for your participation!

The BlackBerry App World Team

* Fee BlackBerry PlayBook offer subject to terms and conditions

Dear BlackBerry PlayBook Haters, Stop Drinking the Kool-Aid

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 09:23 AM PDT

kidsuperman

I am always amazed when analysts and reporters love to open their mouths to prepare for more "foot" to be shoved in. For the last month or two we have been hearing non stop tirades on how the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook will be a non starter and pales when pitted against the competition. I see it over and over again and it dismayed that some people are so set against a device that has the potential to actually redefine the tablet market. (and the smartphone market with the QNX OS)

Lets take the most common reasons haters cite as to why the PlayBook will fail miserably.

  1. The BlackBerry PlayBook doesn't have a significant number of apps…
  2. It costs the same as an iPad
  3. It does not have a native email client at launch (Requires a BlackBerry for Bridging)

Lack of PlayBook apps

More often than not I hear about how the PlayBook does not have enough apps to compare against the iPad and Android Honeycomb builds. First of all lets set the stage a bit. What market is the BlackBerry PlayBook targeted at? A smartphone companion or a laptop replacement? I asked many iPad users and to them it almost always is defined as a sub-$800 laptop replacement or alternative. So that got me thinking. How many apps do you have installed on your laptop that you would want on a tablet?

As I pointed out before, most of the things I do on my laptop are in the browser. For example, right now I have 40+ tabs open in FireFox. The thing is that almost half of them are "Apps" that will work like a charm on the BlackBerry PlayBook. Trust me I tried them. Here are some examples:

  • Two Google Apps email accounts and One Gmail account
  • Gmail Calendar
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google Reader
  • Chartbeat
  • Pandora
  • Youtube/Vimeo
  • WordPress
  • Google Analytics
  • Google Adsense

So essentially every website that uses Flash is an "app" that is unnecessary on the BlackBerry PlayBook. There might be a benefit for some things to be pulled into an app but WHY compromise? It seems like everybody has forgotten that Apple's iPad is missing the most popular app on the web. Namely Flash. While Android has Flash it is not available built into the native OS. According to RIM that is 1.6 million more Flash website "apps" that are unavailable on the iPad.

On top of that RIM has taken a shotgun approach to development on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook currently supports Adobe AIR/Flash and WebWorks (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) for development. They have also announced an upcoming Java and Android app player "sandbox" along with a native C/C++ SDK. That is FIVE different development environments to entice developers. RIM is banking on that to bring in the apps.

The PlayBook costs the same as the iPad

This one puzzles me. RIM is the first grade-A tablet maker that has a Tablet priced anywhere near the iPad. It matches it almost dollar for dollar without carrier subsidies. Except for the screen size, which makes it more portable, the iPad stacks up nicely against the PlayBook with each winning in different areas. Don't get me wrong RIM could sell more if it was priced at $300 but then they would be losing money and undervaluing their own product.

In short it is the same price or even less because you can use coupons on the BlackBerry PlayBook at retailers and the prices are only MSRP. That means they will go down while the iPad will remain $499+ until next year.

It does not have a native email client (BlackBerry Bridge)

I am really curious to know how many consumers out there have a native email client on their desktop or laptop? I only use Outlook at the office because of its Exchange features but other than that I exclusively use Gmail and Google Apps. RIM made a compromise and simply allowed you to view your BlackBerry Smartphones email from your PlayBook. An interesting idea and a real win for businesses that cannot justify paying for another data plan just to get email, calendar, contacts, and other data on a business tablet.

That means that many companies can deploy the PlayBook along with a BlackBerry as a value proposition. They can use the device over Wi-Fi regularly but access their email, contacts, and calendar on a bigger screen. We know RIM is bringing a native email client in the future but I would rather them get it right since there is a reason I don't use Outlook for my Gmail and Google Apps accounts.

I would actually flip this lack of native email complaint on its head. The BlackBerry PlayBook is the only tablet that gives you access to email, contacts, calendar, BBM and more without a data plan for your tablet. The BlackBerry PlayBook is also the only tablet to ship with a built in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel application along with a PDF reader. That same suite costs $30+ on an iPad from Apple…

Conclusion

In short I think RIM has a solid offering with the BlackBerry PlayBook. It is really sad to see people hating on the device for nitpicky reasons without seeing the future potential for RIM. This is a long game for RIM. They plan on consistently adding functionality to the PlayBook. For example, the Android apps and Java apps player will be coming in the summer. They will also be releasing a native email client, gaming engine, C/C++ SDK, 3G and 4G variants, and more as a constant evolution.

In short the BlackBerry PlayBook has some serious potential. It offers features and speed that can only be dreamed of on other platforms with an OS that has been around longer than Windows and designed by a company that defined mobile productivity. After stagnating a bit in the mobile OS RIM has brought a gun to the gun fight with the BlackBerry PlayBook and it's main competitor is essentially running a smartphone OS on a bigger screen. I got a chance to play with the BlackBerry PlayBook quite a few times until now and I cannot wait to finally take one home!

Let me know what you think!

PS: Expect a follow up article on why I think you should choose the BlackBerry PlayBook over competitors like the iPad. Once you set it down in an easy to consume format you start seeing things like "no iTunes required" and native Flash support.

BBM Video Icon Shows Up on the PlayBook During Demo With Rogers

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

BBM_video_Chat

In yet another demo of the BlackBerry PlayBook, Jeff Gadway touches on the Docs to Go suite, bridging with your BlackBerry, and the uncompromised web. He doesn't mention this BBM Video application that we've heard about before.

I'm interested to see exactly what the BBM Video interface looks like and if video chat will be enabled with non-BBM contacts. I'd also like to see what this 'Intranet' icon is about and see more of the capabilities of the BlackBerry Bridge.  If the name is BBM video it  is possible that the video application will be PIN based and that the PlayBook will have it's own PIN number.

Luis posted some possibilities of the BBM app making it to the PlayBook a few weeks back. It will be interesting to see if he was on the right track.

Check out the video below and see if you can spot the icon.

Wakeful Beta – Sweet BlackBerry Alarm App

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:07 AM PDT

I always tell myself that one day I will have a butler who will beckon me from bed with the time, telling me the weather while I choose my clothes, read the news headlines during coffee and telling me about stocks while I head out the door.

Well, I doubt I’ll ever have a butler but I can still have all that done for me with the help of a little app called Wakeful. This little baby can be scheduled to wake you up with not the annoying tune of a ringtone but with a soothing male or female voice.

Check out the YouTube video from their website:

Wakeful BlackBerry App

Not only will get the time, but you’ll also get the local weather and conditions, news headlines and Dow Jones and S&P stock information dictated to you. This is an awesome step past the annoying alarm clocks of yesterday. So go to the Wakeful.com and sign up for their beta. Wake up on the more informed side of the bed.

Sencha Touch Web Framework Now Supports BlackBerry WebKit and PlayBook

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:01 AM PDT

Sencha touch demo app

Sencha Touch is a very popular JavaScript Web framework that until this week did not support any BlackBerry devices (at least officially). Sencha's CEO was at DevCon 2010 a few months back and he said they are very interested in the RIM platform and are working on adding compatibility for the BlackBerry. They are now following through on that promise.

RIM announced on their blog that the Sencha Touch v1.1 framework brings support for both BlackBerry OS 6.0 devices like the Torch and the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. I actually starting building a PlayBook app with Sencha but was waiting for official support from Sencha. Now its here.

You can download the framework and read more at this link. They also have some demo apps available and curiously enough one of them features Jim Balsillie. :)

PS: Kudos to the RIM dev team for making this happen. This is a great way to encourage the development community.

Jim Balsillie Says BlackBerry OS 6.1 is a “Major Upgrade”

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 06:54 AM PDT

blackberry OS 6.1

RIM earnings calls are usually really boring so I skipped the one yesterday. They tend to just have a rant or two by Jim Balsillie along with Apple lovers asking stupid questions. This past earnings call was a bit different from what I gather with Jim Balsillie talking about the BlackBerry OS 6.1 upgrade coming this Spring.

According to what I caught from Engadget Jim was saying that BlackBerry 6.1 is a major upgrade. It is what BlackBerry 6.0 was supposed to be which makes me wonder why its not BlackBerry 7… Here are some select quotes caught by Business Insider:

  • "The demand in interest in those products is, like, amazing."
  • "The scrambling for them, and trying to get special circumstances for it, is super intense for the various new products."
  • "The meetings with the carriers on these products and the level of commitment is outstanding."
  • "It’s a very substantial enhancement to the product in some profound ways."
  • "The products this summer have enormous interest, carrier engagement globally is extremely high."
  • "Their jaws dropped — the carriers’. They love it. And the biggest risk that we have is getting it certified and getting it to market in a certain time."

Anybody else excited? Check out what we know so far about BlackBerry OS 6.1 at this link.

RIM Ships 14.9 Million BlackBerrys in Q4 – Investors Worry About Guidance

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 06:45 AM PDT

BlackBerry PlayBook Game On

RIM broke their device records again in their fiscal Q4 report. They shipped 14.9 million BlackBerrys in the past quarter and 52.3 in total for the whole of fiscal 2010. Investors are kind of grumpy since RIM pointed out that the first quarter of this year has been heavily focused on selling lower margin devices in the first quarter of this year. That makes sense since RIM did not have new products come out during that time. RIM also said that there is an increased level of investment in their platform and Tablet initiatives. They also throw in that the range of growth might be larger because of supply chain issues that may arise from the earthquake in Japan.

The thing is that I don't really understand these skeptical investors. First of all RIM has been selling lower margin devices because they are cooking up a new batch of devices that they promise will blow our minds. They are also stretching into the PlayBook market along with developing QNX which explains the investment in future growth. Last but not least I can't think of any electronic manufacturer that will not be effected in some way by the earthquake in Japan.

All in all I think RIM has a pretty solid set of quarters for the next year. The PlayBook will be a major test for RIM but so far critics just seem to harp on the lack of apps or lack of email client. On the apps side the device will support about 6 development platforms so it should attract developers if significant quantities sell. In terms of an email client are we really worried that RIM will not be able to develop one?

All I can say is times are changing at RIM and they are starting to move quickly. They were a little too complacent but its nice to see them get aggressive.

App-Stalker1

S4BB has just released an app that is long overdue, it notifies you when any item in App World becomes discounted or even free.  It is a free app that notifies you via a message in your messages folder and LED. It runs silently in the background, and doesn't take up many resources.  It works with all OS5 and newer devices.  It is available through App World at the link below. Not exactly the most astounding app but might help you find some great BlackBerry apps.

BlackBerry Messenger V5.0.3.13 is now available in BlackBerry BetaZone.  Not much in terms of changes, just for those of you who like to have the highest version numbers on all your apps.

Here is RIM's version of the Changelog:

What’s New in this Version?

The short answer? Nothing that you can really see. We’ve made a few minor back-end fixes to the application and would like to make sure everything is working just fine. You may not see any of the bugs or feature requests you reported for BlackBerry Messenger v5.0.2 addressed in this build, but don’t be discouraged! Rest assured that we’ve received ALL your feedback and it will all be taken into consideration for future versions of the software.

Remember, that participation in older BBM Beta's is sometimes a prerequisite for BBM Beta's.

Login to BlackBerry BetaZone to see if you are eligible.
