BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 AT&T September & T-Mobile November Launch?

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 01:49 AM PDT

Lots of BlackBerrys

The rumors keep coming for the upcoming BlackBerry device lineup. The latest news coming from NerdBerry is that the BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 is coming to AT&T in September and T-Mobile in November. The full touch Torch 9850 and 9860 will be hitting CDMA carriers first with a Sprint and Verizon launch in November. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is on a different schedule with Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile getting it in August and AT&T scheduled for November. Last but not least the BlackBerry Curve 9360 is scheduled for September with a rollout to all carriers in November.

All in all this is still in rumorville but anybody else as excited as I am?

Highlights of RIM’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders (Good Stuff!)

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:07 PM PDT

RIM Map

Usually the RIM annual meeting of shareholders is a relatively boring affair but this year it has been getting quite a bit more attention. There was enough hype to even convince Kevin from CrackBerry to over there and live blog the event. I got a chance to listen to the webcast while I was eating dinner and there are some great tidbits there. Here are the notes I took:

  • There are now 67 million BlackBerry subscribers
  • Of those there are 45 million BBM users
  • The 4G PlayBook is still on schedule for this fall
  • The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is Mike Lazaridis's favorite device… :)
  • The PlayBook is being tested by over 1500 enterprises
  • It will be the first of seven new BlackBerry 7 smartphones this year
  • That will lead directly into the first QNX phones early 2012 (Thanks Don for pointing out that Mike said early 2012)
  • The BlackBerry PlayBook is a taste of what is coming for QNX phones
  • RIM had to skip a generation of phones to get their hardware up to par

Let me know if I missed anything! Derek also pointed out that Bla1ze managed to record a great shareholder who blasted RIM on not marketing and selling correctly but then made fun of the analysts bashing RIM while typing out their comments on a BlackBerry. All in all RIM managed to deflect most criticism and come out ahead with this meeting. Kudos to them! Now just hurry up and get a 9900 in my hand!

Rumor: BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.7 Coming This Friday?

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:04 PM PDT

IMG_00000420

The latest coming out of the rumor mill has the BlackBerry PlayBook getting a new OS update on July 15th. NerdBerryreceived confirmation from one of their sources that the PlayBook will be getting OS 1.0.7 on Friday July 15th. This is not the native email and PIM packing OS update some are hoping for but supposedly that has been pushed back until "Later this year" from a previous "late summer" release. Who knows what that means.

Either way the new v1.0.7 is supposed to be an incremental update adding:
•    Enhanced demo mode
•    Demo modes rebuilds the OS
•    More to come
I am all for OS updates but I am waiting for some serious new feature builds! Everybody ready to start mashing that "Check for Updates" button?

FileScout Updated With BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform Integration

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:04 PM PDT

FileScout

Now that BBM Social Platform is coming out of Beta we are seeing more and more apps implement it. I am waiting for games to use it but for now apps like the venerable FileScout are adding support. You could always send multiple files using FileScout but now you can also send the files over BBM. Right now you can only send files one at a time this way but hopefully that will change with future BBM SDK builds.

Here is the change log:

  • FileScout is now supporting the new BlackBerry Messenger SDK. With the BBM™ Integration you are able to send any file to any of your BBM Contacts [requires BBM 6.0.0.111 (or higher)]. Please note that even FileScout is already support the sending of multiple files, right now you have to select the recipient and confirm the send process for each of the selected files separate. I hope this can be changed with later releases of RIM’s BBM-SDK.
  • The image manipulation (rotate & resize) can now be also called directly from the build in ImageViewer
  • Since the release of 2.6.x it was not possible any longer to enter text in Japanese, Chinese or Korean language in the TextEditor. This has been fixed in the new build.
  • If you make use of the HomeScreen Application Shortcuts, FileScout can be instantly launched by pressing the ‘F’-Key
  • Multiple other minor bugfixes

You can pick up the new version of FileScout in App World for $4.99 with a 30 day free trial

App World of Possibilities

You wouldn’t think that RIM had another update for App World before they finally roll out v3.0 but it looks like they do. The CrackBerry team noticed an update to v2.1.4.9 for App World which does not have a change log so we can only guess what it adds. Let us know what you find!

Find Free Flash Games for your PlayBook on FlashPlayBook.com

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Flash games

I have been waiting for somebody to start compiling fun flash games to play in the BlackBerry PlayBook browser. We saw one developer try to do this with a sweet app but that required updating every time there was a new game. FlashPlayBook.com is taking a different approach in simply categorizing fun flash games that work on the PlayBook.

Check it out at www.FlashPlayBook.com and let me know if you spot other good resources for Flash games!

Ongoing BlackBerry Code Signing Servers Issues & Outage

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT

 Outage

In a really painful move for most third party developers RIM's code signing servers have been down and having issues since the weekend started. RIM is the only company I know of that requires developers to "phone home" to RIM's infrastructure to code sign applications and the whole process is already cumbersome. I have been begging my contacts at RIM for years to get rid of the undo burden this complex code signing process adds to BlackBerry developers but it has fallen on deaf ears and instead they have been trying to improve it ever so slowly.

Josep pointed out to me that the code signing servers were down earlier in the week but that is not unusual. What is unusual is how long they have been down for and are still currently in a "degraded state 3-10 emails every single time they code sign an application but they have failed to notify devs about when this outage will be fixed or even its status. This is stopping devs from releasing or testing their third party apps until the code signing servers are back up.

Josep also pointed out this website that tracks the success and downtime of all 4 of the signing servers:
isthesigningserverdown.com/beta/

We shouldn't need such a website. Hopefully somebody at RIM is noticing and realizes that code signing should only be required for the more complex Certicom cryptographic APIs. They offer mickey mouse security and RIM can simply allow remote killing of rogue apps using another process like BIS. While this is not a big deal in the long run I simply hate code signing…

BIS 4.1 Leaked Slides Hint at Different PlayBook Email System

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:30 AM PDT

BIS-41-5

We know that native email is coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook soon but its nice to see more signs pointing in that direction. After writing up yesterday about the leaked BIS 4.1 feature set I noticed the last slide mentioned something interesting as a "User Interface Change." In it RIM says they have updated the BIS login page and setup page to "advise user(s) that BlackBerry tablet setup in not supported when using these interfaces."

Which begs the question of where and how it will be supported… :)

US Cellular Rebate Shows BlackBerry Torch 9850 and Curve 9350

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:05 AM PDT

us cellular rebate coupon

To confirm that Torch name we are seeing the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and BlackBerry Curve 9350 showing up on a rebate form for US Cellular. Both of the devices have yet to even be confirmed from RIM but we know they are coming. Its nice to see some more confirmation though and the lack of carrier exclusives.

All Touch BlackBerry 9850 & 9860 To Carry the Torch Name?

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 05:35 AM PDT

 rimemail

While RIM is showing off the BlackBerry Bold 9900 they have not said much about the BlackBerry Torch 9810 update or the even more interesting BlackBerry 9850 and 9860. The 9850 and 9860 are the all touch devices that kind of look like the previous Storm devices. We have been hearing rumors that they will be carrying the Torch name even though they don't have slide out keyboards. Paul from UpdateYourBlackBerry emailed one of his contacts at RIM about the branding and they more or less confirmed that the devices will carry the Torch name even though they resemble the Storm line more. They just want to give it a fresh start.

telusleaked devices

What do you think they should be called? I want RIM to take on mythology and call it the BlackBerry Zeus or Mars. :) Who knows what RIM Marketing will do with the name but it looks like they will be called the Torch for now.
