RIM Hints to PlayBook Update in Latest Website Images

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 03:07 AM PDT

Playbook Update Video Chat

RIM slips up every once in awhile with their website images. BBin.in noticed exactly such a slipup on RIM's website this week with the BlackBerry PlayBook images showing off updates that we have not yet seen on the device. First of all they spotted what looks like Headset support or possibly even Bluetooth headset support for the PlayBook which I have been waiting for. It is shown off in the bottom of the video chat screenshot above.

 Playbook Update BBM Chat

On top of that they also noticed that the fonts in the BBM Bridge have been updated. They have also added some nice touches like showing the delivery and recieve status time you can see from BBM on your phone.

Facebook PlayBook Update

The Facebook app also looks a bit revamped. Check them out at us.blackberry.com and let us know if you spot anything else. Who knows this update may even drop today like we previously heard.

Rumor: RIM Working on BBM Social Platform Music App

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 01:36 AM PDT

BBM Music App

I am really hoping RIM blows things out of the park with the BBM social platform and their 1st party apps and helps developers do the same. In that vein BBSync heard from one of their sources that RIM is working on a BBM Social Platform Music app that will make use of that API called BBM Music. I think that is a brilliant move especially after their moves into Amazon MP3 store and BlackBerry Radio.

The app is supposed to be a stand alone app but tie in to BBM nice and tight. What do you think of such an app? I know quite a few people who already use BBM to share what music they are listening to. I am hoping the BBM Social Platform allows devs like Slacker and Pandora to do the same.

PlayBook IM+ App Held “Under Review” By RIM for 2 Months

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 08:30 PM PDT

IMPlus under review

I am not sure what to make of this one. When Luis first told me about it earlier today I did a double take. I know that Amail was "under review" perpetually but that app was at least a clear violation of the SDK license that says you cannot create an email app. Sad but at least understandable. Things get a lot weirder when it comes to long time BlackBerry developer Shape Services. We found out back in mid April that IM+ multi network instant messaging client was coming to the PlayBook and even had an approximate price point at $19.95 along with a May scheduled release.

The thing is Shape submitted IM+ to RIM in App World back on May 19th. That is just shy of 2 months ago! I realize that it might take up to a week to get an app reviewed but 2 months without hearing back from RIM is ridiculous. When Luis pointed it out this morning I immediately reached out to RIM but I have not heard a word back. I was hoping they would simply say it was a mistake and the app would be available. No such luck.

This has prompted Shape to post about it on Google+ throwing their hands in the air. RIM literally cannot allow these key apps to fall through the cracks like this. Even if they are not going to approve it at least communicate with a long time BlackBerry dev. I have been hearing rumblings for awhile that RIM is working on streamlining the App World review house team but maybe they simply need to get off their lazy… I know I submitted two apps for other devs that took almost 2 weeks to get approved but at least that was back before the device launched. With IM+, an app that could really do well on the PlayBook, this is simply unacceptable.

This is why I am very against RIM's new concept of keeping App World as the only way to get apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook without the user unfriendly sideloading process. THIS is one of many reasons why RIM should simply allow apps to install through the browser. Its one of the best features of BlackBerry phones that they have denied the PlayBook.

So RIM the ball is in your court. Even if we are only hearing one side of the story this shouldn't even be an issue in the first place. RIM justifies using App World as the only platform for distributing PlayBook apps to help developers centralize. It wasn't meant to hold developers hostage, stop them from beta testing, and make developing for the PlayBook a hassle…

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Foursquare BlackBerry App v3.0 Alpha Adds BBM Integration

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:45 PM PDT

FourSquare BBM Beta

Foursquare finally released a public alpha build of their app with BBM integration that they were showing off at BlackBerry World. I was waiting for this app to drop since it is a real proof of concept for BBM integration from a high profile app. I am hoping more come soon but check out the Alpha if you are willing to live on the bleeding edge and have BBM 6.0 installed from the Beta Zone.

Download the Alpha build v3.0 of Foursquare at: foursquare.com/blackberry/alpha. Kudos to Tim for sending this one in! via BBOS

Devs: Win a BlackBerry Bold 9900 & a NYC Flight, Hotel, & $500 for the BBM Hackathon!

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 12:48 PM PDT

BerryReview Hackathon Mad Programmer

Since RIM reached out to us about the BBM Hackathon competition I was very intrigued. Working together with RIM we managed to sweeten the contest with our own BerryReview Wildcard contest entry to the RIM BBM Hackathon (www.bbmnyc.com) we told you about earlier today. While RIM is offering up 10 invites to the event we have our own prize. The developer who wins our BerryReview Hackathon contest will not only get a free trip to NYC (Flight & Hotel) to attend and compete in the Hackathon event from August 10th through 13th along with $500 spending money. Our winners will also get a free BlackBerry Bold 9900 (when available) courtesy of BerryReview!

Sounds too good to be true? Obviously there are rules but first lets cover how you enter OUR Hackathon contest. Since the winner must have the skills to compete in the RIM BBM Hackathon we decided to make our contest a test. To enter you simply have to create an original BlackBerry Smartphone Java or WebWorks app that makes our Judges laugh and offer it for free to all our users. The contest app must be funny but not crude or harmful and should hopefully not take a skilled developer very long to create. For example, you could create a prank app that pretends to put your phone through a washing machine cycle when it reboots (I got the idea from the first virus prank I ever saw). Or it could simply pull in other funny content like funny quotes. We will be judging the entries based on originality, BlackBerry development skill demonstrated, design, and most of all if it manages to make us laugh (or cry laughing). You can even win brownie points if throw in some BBM Social Platform features though that is not required.

Submissions to the BerryReview Hackathon can be made through the comments on this article or by emailing hackathon2011@berryreview.com. The BerryReview Hackathon contest apps must also follow the same restrictions as the BBM Hackathon contest including: No crude, illegal, hateful, offensive, disparaging, or other restrictions for entry apps which are set in the BBM Hackathon contest rules. To be eligible to win the BerryReview Hackathon you as the developer must both submit an app following the rules above and also:

  • have an idea for a new BlackBerry application that incorporates BBM
  • have the capability to build a BlackBerry smartphone app with your idea
  • have a laptop with all the software, accessories and equipment needed to build your app, including a laptop loaded with BlackBerry WebWorks or BlackBerry Java
  • be a resident of the United States, District of Columbia (excluding Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Florida) or Canada (excluding Quebec)
  • be able to travel to attend the BBM Apps Hackathon Event on August 10-13, 2011, and be able to confirm such availability within 48 hours of potential winner notification
  • understand that the BBM Hackathon NYC event will be filmed and that by participating in the BBM Apps Hackathon Contest, consent to the filming of your developer story and the use of your image
  • Submit your entry by 11:59 EST on July 22nd so winners can be announced on July 27th

If you win our BerryReview Hackathon contest you will receive a:

  • Free BlackBerry Bold 9900 when available
  • Economy flight for you from the international airport nearest your residence to New York City departing on August 10, 2011 and returning on August 13, 2011
  • Three night hotel stay in a standard room at the ACE Hotel
  • Attendance at the BBM Hackathon Event on August 11 and 12, 2011
  • $500USD spending money
  • The prize also includes exclusive invitations to a party on the evening of August 10 and a dinner on the evening of the 11th.
  • Free publicity for both your apps on BerryReview!

So what are you waiting for? Start developing and let us know in the comments or on the tip line if you have any ideas for developers or just want to bounce some ideas off the community. Also don’t wait for the last minute to enter! Somebody else might steal your idea…

Kudos to #TeamBlackBerry @ RIM for making this happen! You know who you are!

AT&T Now Gives You More International Data for Your Dollar

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 10:56 AM PDT

banner_international_service_plans

I was really pissed when AT&T killed off their international BlackBerry Plan that you could add whenever you want. Last time I went to Israel I had to fork over $50 for 50MB of data while I was there. That was kind of ridiculous and now it looks like even AT&T has realized that. They have more than doubled most of the international data buckets for the same price. Here are the new prices:

  • 50MB package for $24.99/month compared to the current 20MB package for $24.99/month
  • 125MB package for $49.99/month compared to the current 50MB package for $59.99/month
  • 275MB package for $99.99/month compared to the current 100MB package for $119.99/month
  • 800MB package for  $199.99/month compared to the current 200MB package for $199.99/month

Check out all the details in the press release below:

International Travelers Can Use A Lot More Data With New Global Packages From AT&T

Available July 17, New Packages Will Offer Better Value and More than Double the Data Allowance in Over 100 Countries

Dallas, Texas, July 12, 2011

AT&T* today announced a new lineup of AT&T Data Global Add-On packages that will make it more affordable than ever for wireless customers to enjoy data services while traveling internationally. Launching July 17, the upgraded packages** give customers more than double the data allowance of current packages and offer additional savings.

The new international data package tiers are:

  • 50MB package for $24.99/month compared to the current 20MB package for $24.99/month
  • 125MB package for $49.99/month compared to the current 50MB package for $59.99/month
  • 275MB package for $99.99/month compared to the current 100MB package for $119.99/month
  • 800MB package for  $199.99/month compared to the current 200MB package for $199.99/month

Designed to give customers the freedom and flexibility to use data abroad, without having to search for a Wi-Fi hotspot, the new packages make it more convenient and affordable for international travelers to use their smartphone, tablet or laptop to stay in touch via email, update their status on popular social networking sites and enjoy convenient access to information such as maps and directions.

"Mobile data is a huge part of our customers' wireless experience—whether they are in the United States or traveling around the globe," said Bill Hague, executive vice president of International, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "We've long offered more phones that can be used internationally than our competitors, and now we're delivering industry-leading value with redesigned international data packages."

AT&T's wireless customers enjoy a robust selection of world phones and international discount data, messaging and voice packages, along with the broadest global coverage of any U.S. wireless provider. With voice service in more than 220 countries, AT&T customers can travel around the globe and make and receive calls on the same wireless number they use at home.  AT&T also offers data roaming service (email, web browsing) in more than 200 countries, including 3G speeds in more than 140 countries, including Japan and South Korea. Coverage is also available on more than 140 major cruise ships.

For more information on other AT&T international services, including discount packages for messaging, voice and international long distance services, as well as travel tips, visit www.att.com/global.

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

**Overage rate is $10 for each 10MB of data used in a billing cycle. Data allowance and overage rates apply in more than 100 countries. Visit att.com/globalcountries for a list of included countries.

***The new AT&T Data Global Add-On packages provide discounted data rates in over 100 countries. Outside of these countries, pay-per-use rates apply.

BlackBerry 6 Browser Search Bar Now Goes to Google Mobile Site!

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 05:55 AM PDT

BlackBerry Browser Google Search

Finally! Its amazing how the small things make such a big difference. Since RIM introduced the Google search bar in BlackBerry OS 5.0 (I think) it has always directed searches to the Google desktop site. For the last few days I have noticed it is finally going to the new Google Search page they just released for BlackBerry OS 6.0+ devices with WebKit browsers.

I cannot confirm if this is the case for those of you with devices earlier than OS 6.0 but if so let us know in the comments. Thanks Shaun for reminding me about the change. Both of us are not sure what finally changed and if it was on Google or RIM's part. Either way I am MUCH happier now…

SHOWWX+ HDMI Expands Your PlayBook on to a 100” Screen (Projector)

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

SHOWWX _HDMI_BB_PlayBook_2_White_RGB SHOWWX _HDMI_BB_PlayBook_1_White_RGB

Since the BlackBerry PlayBook supports HDMI output without any special dongles it really opens up a world of opportunity. I didn't even think of pocket sized Pico Projectors at first until MicroVision let us know that they are releasing their SHOWWX+ HDMI today. They are pitching this tiny projector as a perfect companion to the BlackBerry PlayBook pumping out a 30" to 100" screen depending on lighting

The SHOWWX+ HDMI projector should be available as of this article going live from microvision.com and Amazon.com at an MSRP of $369. Let us know if you pick one up or what other uses you have for the PlayBook HDMI capabilities. Full press release after the jump:

MicroVision Unveils SHOWWX+ HDMI for Mobile Big-Screen Sharing and Visual Collaboration

Expanded compatibility to growing device ecosystem and large, focus-free viewing experience unlock the potential of mobile devices for collaboration and entertainment

REDMOND, Wash. – July 14, 2011 — MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS), the leader in innovative ultra-miniature laser display technology, today unveiled SHOWWX+™ HDMI™ as the newest addition to its family of award-winning, pocket-size laser pico projectors. With pure digital connectivity to a breadth of new tablets, smartphones and devices offering HDMI video-out, SHOWWX+ HDMI enables spontaneous content sharing and bigger visual collaboration outside of traditional meeting room settings.

SHOWWX+ HDMI is the perfect accessory for sharing content on the move thanks to its small size, plug-and-play connectivity and focus-free operation.  New quick start capabilities offer immediate startup, and given that advancements in the latest operating systems of devices like RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook and Apple's iPad 2 enable true display mirroring—users can connect and project everything on their device screens at image sizes greater than 100 inches in a matter of seconds.

Though HDMI is a standard feature for most laptops and computers, it is a relatively new addition to smartphones and tablets. Adding HDMI connectivity to the SHOWWX line of projectors will extend the family of host devices compatible with MicroVision's display—delivering a larger, more vivid, focus-free viewing experience to an extended range of mobile devices once the HDMI standard is broadly adopted.

"We are giving road warriors the ability to share digital content in a compelling manner, from the palms of their hands," said Alexander Tokman, president and CEO of MicroVision. "Extending our connectivity expands our device ecosystem.  Now even more mobile device users can break free from huddling around their palm or pad-sized screens to enjoy a bigger and more immersive viewing experience anywhere, at work or play."

Visual Collaboration and Entertainment on the Go

Unlike competing products, SHOWWX+ HDMI easily transforms from an on-the-go business collaboration tool to a big screen entertainment display that can play all [digitally rights-protected] content on the host device through HDCP compliance. In addition, MicroVision's unique in-motion laser display technology is ideal for high intensity, action-packed mobile gaming applications, providing focus-free crisp images that do not suffer from image deterioration or "color break-up" that other pico projectors experience.

Broad Device Compatibility

In addition to being certified for use with Apple iPhone, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch, SHOWWX+ HDMI works with tablets including RIM's BlackBerry Playbook and Windows 7 Tablets, and a range of compatible Android and Symbian smartphones, as well as Windows and Apple notebooks, netbooks and ultra portable HDMI-enabled devices.

It also works with compatible digital cameras, camcorders and other consumer electronics devices, as well as laptops and notebooks through an optional VGA dock. For full information on device compatibility, visit microvision.com/showwx/hdmi.

For a video overview of SHOWWX+ HDMI, please visit microvision.com/showwx/hdmi/gallery.

Availability

SHOWWX+ HDMI is currently available in North America for pre-order on microvision.com and Amazon.com at an MSRP of $369. A full suite of optional accessories, including spare batteries, extended HDMI cables, VGA docks, car chargers and carrying cases are available on the MicroVision online store and from authorized distributors.
