RIM Pushing Out BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.5.6 Update

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 07:46 PM PDT

Bridge Update Bridge Update2

Now this is a pretty good sign that a PlayBook OS update is coming soon. I got a notification on my BlackBerry earlier tonight saying that BlackBerry Bridge has been updated to v1.0.5.6. In the past these updates have been harbingers for PlayBook OS updates in the next day or so. Anybody excited?

You can pick up the new BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.5.6 in App World. I also noticed that rr_yy already managed to get OTA's up for it at rroyy.com/ota/

Leaked AT&T Q4 Roadmap With BlackBerry Torch 9860 & Curve 9360

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 02:45 PM PDT

ATT-Roadmap-2H2011

I have been waiting patiently for AT&T to get off their lazy… and release the BlackBerry Bold 9900. Until then we have a leaked AT&T roadmap showing off their Q4 launch devices with the BlackBerry Torch 9860 (all touch) and BlackBerry Curve 9360 on schedule for Q4 whenever this roadmap was created. Sadly my beloved 9900 is not on the list but maybe AT&T was planning for a Q3 launch? :) It would be really sad if AT&T released the 9360 before the 9900 but with AT&T they might just roll like that.

Awesome BlackBerry PlayBook Ad for Airport Domination!

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 12:30 PM PDT

 PlayBook AIrport Ad

I am not sure exactly what the story is with this advertisement (Is it new or old? Where is it?) but Gokulesh sent it in to us and I love it. The video was just uploaded by Monster Media and was done in partnership with Starcom and Razorfish. I really want to find this airport and experience some "BlackBerry PlayBook Domination!" The most I have seen about it is MonsterMedia pitching it as one of their non-traditional advertising methods along with their portfolio. Video below:

The tree is shaking now that RIM has announced the new Curve lineup and carriers are falling out confirming the BlackBerry Curve 9360. Other than Sprint they are not talking launch dates but they are confirming the device. You have to love how US carriers are always the quietest. Here are the latest confirmed carriers:

ZAGG "Not So Invisible" invisibleSHIELD Screen Protector

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 10:12 AM PDT

ZAGG Not So invisibleSHIELD ZAGG Not So invisibleSHIELD 2

It has been awhile since I purchased a ZAGG invisibleSHIELD screen cover for my BlackBerry but it is still one of the most popular options available. Tom let us know that he just placed an order for two invisibleSHIELDs for his new BlackBerry Bold 9930 and was shocked to discover that the shield is no longer so invisible. It now has the companies name "ZAGG" stamped on the bottom left part of the screen protector. This branding might not be that bad if they did it over a unusable part of the screen but it clearly covers the screen. That is a real shame since they could have at least taken usability in mind when they performed their branding decisions.

When he first contacted ZAGG they offered to give him a 25% off coupon and compared the branding to the Nike or Apple logo on their devices but Tom pointed out they don't cover the screen with it. Here is Tom's response to that:

  1. You market ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD as "an exceptionally clear and virtually indestructible film" (from your website’s FAQ) and go on to state that "because the protective film is optically clear, it does not distort the images" — it is no longer clear with the "ZAGG®" marking (i.e., "clearly" FALSE ADVERTISING).
  2. In my opinion, this is a significant change to the product — there has been no disclosure to customers of this change.
  3. The customer service supervisor said that the change was made at the beginning of the year — I have bought several ZAGG invisibleSHIELDs since the beginning of this year (check my account), and this is the first with the logo!
  4. The logo could have been easily moved to the right (i.e., over the black screen margin) so that it did not impact the actual use of the device, although it may have been necessary to use an alternate color (e.g., white) for it to be visible.

Tom did escalate this to the ZAGG Office of the President and they have kindly offered to send him replacements without the branding. It is nice to see that ZAGG is doing the right thing for Tom but we still think it is worth mentioning for others who may be considering the purchase of a not so invisible invisibleSHIELD.

Let us know in the comments if you ran into the same issue or have found an alternative. Hopefully ZAGG realizes the error of their ways and stops putting their branding over the screen. Avoiding poor usability should always trump marketing.

Curve Hands on

RIM has been showing off the BlackBerry Curve 9360 that they just announced. The first to post a hands on preview of the release device is Engadget which got a nice gallery full of images. Many of you are also probably wondering what the difference is between the BlackBerry Curve 9350, 9360, and 9370. RIM Shows Off Law Enforcement Concept Car with BlackBerry PlayBook

There has been a very interesting push from RIM to integrate the BlackBerry PlayBook into cars for law enforcement. I have not been able to tell if all of these concepts are related or separate but RIM has shared some info on their latest concept car for "serving and protecting… With a BlackBerry PlayBook. The concept of using a PlayBook with all of its security certifications and BlackBerry integration is a strong argument. I love the mount they have setup in this car and it makes me wish I had a car of my own to try it out on. Until then I highly recommend checking out RIM's setup if you have any aspirations of creating your own PlayBook connected car. Video of it in action below!

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 Internet Speedtest!

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 07:08 AM PDT

9900 SpeedtestI know there are reviews all over the internet but perhaps this might be something new. I borrowed my friend’s phone for an hour to play and… I’m shell shocked. On my 9780, using the SAME sim card and at the SAME location, I’m only able to achieve about 200kbps. But look at the 9900!

The first tests I ran was loading of the BerryReview website. (I was trying to find the desktop mode to no avail..)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTGJSM4kPsQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcsRO0ZA6wY

After which, I ran the mobile speed test via www.mobilespeedtest.com

In the end, for the largest file available (7mb) the speed was the astonishing 7789kbps.

The Result

In order of the file size being tested here are the results (taken via the playbook):

And now, VS the 9780 (taken via the Blackberry 9900):

Rest assured, I have more retro videos for a shootout coming your way this weekend :D

Coming your way

SugarSync for BlackBerry v2.1 Adds Local Folder Sync!

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:29 AM PDT

SugarSync Folder Sync SugarSync Folder Sync2

For some reason SugarSync has not yelled this from the rooftop but thankfully @diegonei pointed it out. SugarSync for BlackBerry has been updated to v2.1 and it adds a brand new feature that I have been begging them for years to add. It now lets you sync folders to the SD card and memory of your BlackBerry. Sweet right? I also notice that this new version looks much better on my OS 7 BlackBerry Bold 9930 so it could be they tweaked it for new devices too. Either way this is yet another reason why you should be signing up for SugarSync now. As SugarSync says "If you like DropBox you will love SugarSync!"

You can pick up SugarSync for BlackBerry 2.1 in App World and sign up for a free SugarSync account if you don't already have one. Official change log after the jump:

Direct Folder Sync to BlackBerry for Offline Access

BlackBerry users have always been able to access all of their files and folders from the Cloud via SugarSync's app. But today, BlackBerry users can now select any folder on any computer and sync it locally to their BlackBerry for offline access. Are you about hop on a plane, but need to review and edit some files on your BlackBerry while disconnected? Just sync the folders to your device before getting on the plane, and have access throughout the flight. As soon as you get off the plane and connect to a network, you can re-sync all your changes to the Cloud and your other devices.

SD Card Sync Enables Syncing of Photos and Folders to the Cloud

The new SugarSync for BlackBerry app includes support for syncing the SD card on BlackBerry devices. This enables users to select their photos or other folders on their BlackBerry's SD card and sync it to their computers and the Cloud. Do you snap a ton of photos with your BlackBerry, but hate the process of plugging your device into your computer to get the photos off your device? SugarSync's SD card sync for BlackBerry enables you to select your Photos folder (or any other folder) and sync it to your computer from anywhere. No wires required.

Additional Security with Application PIN Code

All SugarSync mobile transactions have always been encrypted and secure, to make sure you can securely sync and access all of your files and data no matter where you are. Today, SugarSync for BlackBerry adds an additional layer of security by providing the user the ability to set a PIN code in order to access the SugarSync app. Did you leave your BlackBerry in the cab again? With the PIN code enabled, you have added security from someone accessing your SugarSync app if they find your device.

The new SugarSync for BlackBerry app is the latest update in SugarSync's line of mobile apps, which cover 95 percent of all mobile devices in the world including iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Window's Mobile, and Symbian devices.
