Are Canadian Carriers Responsible for RIM’s Data Efficiency Focus?

Posted: 26 Aug 2011 05:54 AM PDT

Bold 9900 Shrunk

RedNightHawk pointed out a very interesting article Michael Geist in The Star. In it Michael tries to explain why the Canadian government stepping in to help RIM is not exactly what it should do. Instead he flips the argument on its head claiming that RIM is partially a victim of its Canadian environment. I don't know enough about the Canadian market but his argument definitely has some truth to it.

Geist points out that RIM has been catering to carriers which is why they had such a focus on data efficiency. This was to please carriers especially Canadian carriers with limited spectrum and limited data plans. While limited data plans are coming to carrier in the US Geist points out that RIM used data efficiency to make their products attractive to carriers while others focused on customers "compared to bandwidth hogging deices such as the Apple iPhone.

Definitely worth a read. Check out "RIM's woes partly based in Canadian telecom policy" and let us know what you think.

Review: OtterBox BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 Series Defender

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 02:58 PM PDT

I always have the urge to protect my new devices, and the one case that I always revert to is the OtterBox Defender Series cases. I love them for their full protection, its exactly what someone who suffers from mild OCD needs to make sure their new investment stays in perfect condition. Mine just arrived for my BlackBerry Bold 9900 this week and here are my thoughts so far.

I ordered it 10 days ago, and it arrived this morning. Upon unboxing, one of the immediate things I noticed was the improved holster from the 97xx series. I ended up giving my Defender to a friend because every time I knocked in to something, I would have it unlatch. Doesn’t sound too bad when you notice it, but I had a bad experience Christmas shopping, where thank goodness I had my ringer on loud when in a large department store.

The case design is the classic Defender standard, screen protector, hard plastic shell and a nice rubber overlay for a little bump protection. Another design change is that the hard plastic shell does not have the line of plastic across the screen like it has in the past. As well as they put a shield over the camera and flash, where as in the past it was left open, or the membrane would cover it and get grimy.

My first impressions were that it doesn’t feel like a defender, coming from past series’ of Defenders, they felt clunky, and too big for some of the smaller BlackBerry’s. This one feels like it matches the size and feel of the 9900 perfect. The width and depth of the 9900 really helps. With the 9900 having a bigger physical keyboard, the indent from the plastic to the keypad isn’t nearly as visible to touch as it has in the past. One more thing I really liked is how the volume +/- and mute key now all feel like their own buttons, and on the naked device I always found myself muting when changing the volume.

The holster clips nicely to a variety of belts and on to my laptop bag strap.  As stated above, the actual fit of the device in to the holster is superb, and I have had to use force to remove it from the holster twice this morning. The flaps over the side ports feels very tight, and close nicely. And the grip of the case in my hand feels a lot better than the slick feel of the naked 9900.

Overall I would say it is a great fit for anyone looking to protect their 99xx phone the best they can, without feeling like they are over doing it. The case does not feel clunky and really works well with the new slim design of the 99xx phones.

You can get more information and purchase info directly by visiting the OtterBox website

BlackBerry Desktop Software 7 Beta Screenshots

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 01:29 PM PDT

DM3

One of our tipsters finally got access to the BlackBerry Desktop Software 7 beta and sent us some screenshots. At first look Desktop Software 7 is VERY similar to Desktop Software 6. It updates your Wi-Fi Media Sync app but that’s about it. The one place that seems to have gotten a major overhaul is the Organizer Sync section. I didn't notice any crazy new features but it seems more user friendly, organized, and streamlined though it only supports 32-bit Outlook for now. Will let you know as we learn more.

New organizer options:

Android Copyright Notice Now in Latest BlackBerry OS 7.0.0.353 Leak?

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 12:39 PM PDT

UPDATE: Bla1ze pointed out that this might be related to the new BBJapanese fonts in BlackBerry OS 7. The odd thing is I am running a 9930 on Verizon and it has those fonts in the official .254 OS and it does not have this copyright notice…

Android Copyright BlackBerry 7 Leak 2 Android Copyright BlackBerry 7 Leak

Here is a new head scratcher. Amir pointed out to us that the latest leak of OS 7.0.0.353 on the BlackBerry Torch 9810 includes an interesting new copyright notice in the "About Device Versions" settings page. If you go to the 4th page of that you will see a new copyright notice that was not there before crediting the "Android Open Source Project" with all their rights reserved. We have seen RIM add in these sorts of copyright notices before for WebKit, fonts, and even the new Qualcomm snapdragon processor but where does Android come in? Maybe RIM is using some of their source code in some part of BlackBerry 7? If so why start putting the notice in later builds?

Some might even take it far enough to speculate that some part of Android might be making its way to BlackBerry 7 but who knows… Let us know if you spot anything else or if you have some fun speculation (or conspiracy theories) to add!

More Screenshots of BBM Music Show Off Features

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 08:22 AM PDT

bbm-music-1

We told you quite a bit about BBM Music earlier today but we only had 4 screenshots that RIM provided us. We asked them for a video but sadly they did not have one at the time. Hopefully they will release the app into the Beta Zone ASAP for us to try but until then we have some more screenshots thanks to the official BlackBerry Blog's coverage. Over there Doug managed to snag some more screenshots of the app in action. Looks slick right? In my opinion it kind of looks nicer than the BlackBerry 7 music player… :)

Wal-Mart to Offer Lower Pricing For 9900 on New Lines

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 07:15 AM PDT

If you are waiting for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 on T-Mobile you likely heard of the absurd $299 pricetag with a new two year contract. The guys over at BBempire notice that Wal Mart is offering the device at a much lower price only for new lines.

Pricing:

  • New 2-Year Service Agreement: $119.99
  • 2-Year Contract Renewal: $314.99
  • Phone Only Price: $549.99
Not for sure if they will carry this device in store but if you are looking to adding a new line this might be the better way to go.  If not the price at $314 is still a bit higher than what T-Mobile is asking for. Not really sure on the reasoning for this higher price when every other carrier is launching the device at a lower price.

The pricing mentioned is for online orders you can visit the website at this LINK

US Cellular Confirms BlackBerry Torch 9850 Launch Date & Price

Posted: 25 Aug 2011 06:25 AM PDT

US Cellular 9850

US Cellular has been pretty quiet during the BlackBerry 7 device rollout. Now we have them coming out and announcing that they will be getting the BlackBerry Torch 9850 (All Touch). They will be selling the device in stores on August 26th for $199.99 after a $100 mail in rebate. That is a bit pricier than what others are charging but they do have some perks like battery swap and rewards program for paying bills on time, adding a line, or referring new customers. They are also offering a switcher credit of $100 per line for users who switch to US Cellular and activate a new smartphone.

Check out the details in their press release
