Box.net Releases Free Cloud Storage BlackBerry PlayBook App

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 01:01 PM PDT

With SugarSync and DropBox yet to release an official BlackBerry PlayBook app its nice to see that Box.net just put one out. Their app lets you access their cloud storage service to store, send, and access files from your PlayBook. It actually has a pretty slick interface that I hope SugarSync and DropBox are paying attention to. The Box.net app for the PlayBook comes with 50GB free storage for you to kick the tires and includes features like:

  • View your files from anywhere directly on your BlackBerry PlayBook
  • Share files easily with a link
  • Upload files from your device to Box
  • Save content to your tablet for offline access

Keep in mind you need their premium service to sync files from your PC for offline access. You can check out their PlayBook app in App World or learn more about the service at www.box.net.

OEM BlackBerry Micro USB Power Plug Charger ~$5 @ Amazon

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 10:36 AM PDT

Power Plug Charger

A friend of mine asked me to pick up a couple BlackBerry chargers for him and I noticed that the prices had dropped for the relatively new Power Plug style OEM BlackBerry charger. We mentioned the prices of the folding blade OEM wall charger a bit back but these Power Plug USB chargers that come with the newest devices were still pricey. I am not sure when that changed exactly but you can now pick up one of these Power Plug USB charger with the accompanying MicroUSB cable for $5.11 @Amazon with free shipping for orders over $25. It is sold by The Mobile Solutions Company but is fulfilled by Amazon. If you would rather the classic folding blade wall charger you can also get it for $4.59 on Amazon.

Let us know if you find any better deals!

Giveaway: Win One of 20 Copies of Beinfo

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 09:45 AM PDT

imageUsually I am not a huge fan of application that monitor BlackBerry usage or performance but I did like Beinfo. One main reason I like this application is because it integrates into the notification system of your device giving you updates of your battery power, and device performance. The application runs on the background, which makes it less intrusive.

Application description:

BeInfo is designed to give you information about the performance, and the availability of resources on your BlackBerry.

Features:

  • Notifications with Scheduled rotation 10, 20, or 30 second in the notification icon bar includes charge, battery temperature, and flash memory status
  • Main screen displays temperature, load, voltage, average consumption, remaining power duration.
  • Flash Memory  shows memory consumption, available memory, and variation of memory usage.
  • Device information: Date of last reset, time since last reboot, reboot number, mobile number, signal strength, and installed OS version
  • 146 kb
  • Screen capture option
  • BBM integration
  • Free trial ‘

The application does not seem to be a resource hog, and I like the fact that it tells you how much battery time you have left before your device goes . It can be purchase for $2.99 but you can always try it before you purchase at this link

GIVEAWAY: The developer reached out to offer our readers 20 free copies. Simply leave a comment below and let us know why you want to try this app or any feedback you may have for the developer. Good luck, remember only one comment per  person. Giveaway ends Sunday 11 at 11 PM EST US time.

Review: Etymotic Research MC2 Noise-Isolating In-ear Headset and Earphones

Etymotic Research MC2 Noise-Isolating In-ear Headset and Earphones
Cost: $99 @ Amazon
Rating: 7 out of 10 stars

Etymotics is well known as the company with a CUSTOM-FIT program for personalized ear molds that provide a perfect fit. They also happen to sell earphones. Their newest release, the MC2 (a universal follow up to their MC3 iPhone version), claims to be the world's most accurate noise-isolating headset + earphones under $100 for the cost‑conscious consumer.

As far as noise-cancelling, when the earpieces are properly in the ear, you are happily removed from the noise around you. It blocks out most of the sound and allows you to clearly hear your most recent playlist. I have tested these earphones while listening to my latest obsession, Adele, and I have been able to hear her croon to me perfectly clear, well below maximum volume on both my phone and my computer. Using these definitely prevents me from hurting my eardrums on the subway. They are a bit on the pricier side. A non-audiophile like me would normally think twice about spending that much for earphones. Additionally, there is a nifty Send/End Button that, depending on your device, may also mute a call. Always a pro to have an option like that attached to your earphones.

There is much left to be desired when it comes to the fit of these earpieces. Etymotics gives you an array of buds to try to your liking, but I have yet to find one that fits me best. I have not tried their custom fit program. There are two sizes of the 3-flange eartip, or what I refer to as the plunger type buds that seal in very tightly. Etymotics explains you must take out very gently and slowly to break the seal. There are people who may prefer these tips, but it’s something you must get used to. The Foam eartip you must rub between your fingers to compress the foam before inserting into your ear. These fit and block out all noise from the surrounding, but I wish they were shaped a little less boxy and a little more rounded on the edges to fit more comfortably in the ear. The Glider eartip Etymotics states must be pushed in simply to the ear canal. These are the least fitting buds, as they fall out almost immediately, every time.

In short, it’s worth a shot to try the earphones out, especially if you are inclined to try or have used Etymotics Custom-Fit Program. They are a bit on the pricier end, so if you are having trouble with the ear pieces, you may not benefit from the noise isolation. All in all, these are far superior than the typical iPod pain-inducing earphones.

Out of the Ordinary Fun…… (Pranks)

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 08:01 AM PDT

You know, occasionally I like to play pranks and have a little bit of disruptive fun...  Thankfully, the BlackBerry can be party to this…  This one, is just a quick and easy prank that usually gets some very fun comments….  This will work for anyone on a blackberry model that allows you to use voice and BlackBerry Messenger at the same time, while you talking with someone else on a BlackBerry, who is on a model that will do the same.  (Meaning mainly 3G/HSPA devices). Now, this does not work 100% of the time, but the 90%  sure is fun, because most people never modify their profiles enough to nullify this one… :)

To Start, you will need to place a phone call to the person you intend to try this on, while you are using a headset, Hands-Free Bluetooth or the BlackBerry Speakerphone.

Now for the fun partWhile you are on the call with them, you will need to ask if they are on their BlackBerry with it held up to their head and if not, convince them to use their BlackBerry that way.  I’m sure you can come up with your own line for this, without causing much suspicion…

Next, while you are talking to them, open up your BlackBerry Messenger and PING them…. A Ping will cause their blackberry to vibrate against their head, usually leading to some very interesting return comments………  (I’ve noticed for a few, that it sometimes takes 2 or 3 PINGS before they react….)

That’s all there is to this one.  Have fun and please leave a comment on the reactions during those calls…..  LOL

Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 Delayed Until October 2nd Due to “Unexpected Circumstances”

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 06:23 AM PDT

 Sprint Curve 9350

The Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 was supposed to launch today but it has been delayed. At first it was a rumor caught by PhoneArena but Engadget has confirmed it on Sprints boards. Sprint's official statement says:

Due to unexpected circumstances, Sprint shifted the launch of the BlackBerry® Curve™ 9350 smartphone beyond the planned Sept. 9 availability date. It will now go on sale in October with a specific availability date shared at a later time.

The leaked memo PhoneArena received changed the launch date from September 9th to October 2nd. I am really curious to know what these "Unforeseen Circumstances" are. Still I would recommend the 9930 if you can afford it either way.

FAQ: Are BlackBerry Torch 9800 & Torch 9810 Cases & Accessories Compatible?

Posted: 09 Sep 2011 05:45 AM PDT

ACC-14396-313 (Blackberry 9800 Sync Pod

I have been asked this question multiple times in the last few weeks so I thought it would be best to lay the question to rest. Many users have been asking if the accessories for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 are compatible with the new BlackBerry Torch 9810. I have tested out multiple accessories on both devices from Case-Mate, OtterBox, and other vendors and so far they have all fit like a charm. RIM confirms that the dimensions of both devices are identical and their accessories like the SyncPod clearly are for both devices.

The easiest way to confirm this and lay the question to rest is to look at RIM's official ShopBlackBerry store which seems to have simply changed the description of every 9800 accessory to say 9800/9810. Even the battery (F-S1) is the same on both devices. In other words this is more of an upgrade like the 9780 was for the 9700 instead of the incompatible Storm 9500/9530 to the Storm 9520/9550.

Let us know if you run into any accessory or case that does not work between the two devices!
