Pinbook Beta Wants to Help You Meet People on BBM

We knew when RIM released the BBM SDK that there would be many apps jumping on the bandwagon to help you meet new BBM friends. The latest comes from S4BB and promises to help you "reach out and meet new people" through BBM. You setup characteristics about yourself including age, country, gender, interests, language, location, and time zone and the app will match you up with new friends.

Pinbook seems to be free during the beta period but the description says it has a "30 day value back guarantee" which hints that it might not remain free. Check out the Pinbook beta for yourself in App World.

The Rugby World Cup 2011 is currently going on down under and ends on October 23rd. RIM is one of the official sponsors of the event and they are there in full force and even giving away BlackBerry PlayBooks. They have thrown up a dedicated landing page for their Rugby World Cup 2011 activities at www.blackberry.com/rugby. There is also a BlackBerry Smartphone and PlayBook Rugby World Cup app in App World that we mentioned previously.

Last but not least my favorite part is their BlackBerry Australia and New Zealand Face Pain Facebook app that they have going. On the respective Facebook pages you can show your team colors by painting your face though sadly it crashed my browser before I could get a screenshot. Check it out here or all the details on the Inside BlackBerry blog.

Doodle games seem to be popular now and Doodle Run by TwinPinStudio does not disappoint. The game has you moving Doodle around a monster infested jungle or city collecting diamonds along the way. You simply move the doodle around avoiding monsters while collecting his diamonds sort of like PacMan.

BBM Music UK Launch Party Gets Video Remix by EMKWAN

 BBM Music Launch Party

I am not sure why RIM is already throwing a launch party for BBM Music when it is still in beta but at least they are having fun. @emkwan of the EMKWAN PROJECT let us know they made a remixed video montage of the BlackBerry BBM Music PR event in London. Check it out below or the pictures on Facebook and let us know what you think.

Newspile Offers Another Google Reader App for the PlayBook

Posted: 22 Sep 2011 06:54 AM PDT

newspile newspile2

I am really loving the number of apps that are coming out for the PlayBook for Google Reader. The latest to join the fray is Newspile by Dennis Schneider. This new app "focuses on simplicity and design" and seems to hit that target but it is missing offline caching which is what I want.

The feature set of Newspile includes:

  • offers a huge pile of news articles you love.
  • synchronizes two ways. This means that all changes you make within Newspile (i.e. read, star, or broadcast an news item) appear in your Google Reader and vice versa.
  • allows easy, touch optimized pull-to-refresh synchronization
  • lets you view embedded videos in fullscreen mode.
  • lets you share news items via Google.
  • is optimized for low CPU and Memory consumption to increase the battery life of your BlackBerry PlayBook.
  • stores news items locally, for a faster reading experience.
  • has a intuitive and clean layout.
  • opens embedded links in your BlackBerry PlayBook Browser.
  • supports GZIP – Compression, which makes fetching news items efficient, fast and bandwidth friendly.

You can pick up Newspile in App World for $2.99

YouMail for BlackBerry Updated With Visual Caller ID & More

Posted: 22 Sep 2011 05:49 AM PDT

Youmail BlackBerry

YouMail updated their BlackBerry app this week with some sweet new features. Their latest v2.5.17 of their app adds an interesting new concept they are calling Visual Caller ID. It identifies both missed callers and callers who have left messages with a name along with an image and city/state info about the call even if they are not in your address book. They also updated the app to be "more reliable, faster, and better looking" which is always good. Here are the new features:

  • Visual caller id. Now you'll really know who your callers are – even when they're not in your address book! You'll see a picture, name, city and state, and number for almost every call!
  • Contact uploads. Now you can upload your contacts, link them to Facebook, and get even better Caller ID and smarter greetings. To upload contacts, hit Menu, Settings, and Upload Contacts. To connect to Facebook, hit Menu, Settings, Account, and Connect to Facebook.
  • Faster playing. You can now hit the "space bar" to play a message- no more scrolling to the play button.

You can get this latest version of YouMail in BlackBerry App World the only catch is it is only OS 5.0+ for this update.
