BB-Freaks Carbon Theme for OS7 Bold, Curves, and Torch Series

We’ve seen Magmic releasing some themes for the OS7 platform. Mainly these have been for the Bold series as the work arounds have been created using old templates. BB-Freaks has now released their Carbon series for the BlackBerry CURVE 9350/9360/9370, BlackBerry BOLD 9900/9930, BlackBerry TORCH 9810, and BlackBerry TORCH 9850/9860 devices running OS 7.0. Carbon comes in green, red, blue, pink, and orange for $1.99 each. You can pick them up in our store here.

webOS Now Opensource, Developers to Focus on Other Platforms??

We all know that Research In Motion is trying to expand it’s customer base by bringing the Android Player to the PlayBook. Which for me, is something exciting. It can only be a win/win for developers and end users if applications, games, and utilities are available on all platforms. Yesterday, Meg Whitman, CEO of HP, announced that the webOS platform would be going open source, and that all hardware is, as of now, dead. If HP’s Developer Relations team is actively working with the community and is open sourced focusing on being the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable, then it would certainly could lead to webOS’s flirtation on the QNX backbone. Yes, this is truly speculation (and maybe a little hopeful on our parts).

In this day and age of jailbreaking, hacking, side loading, whatever you want to call it, open sourcing allows those very gifted end users to use the platforms provided by companies and build better applications. As I said, this is purely speculation at this point, but we are curious what our readers think. Would you like to see webOS applications ported on the PlayBook? Do you think that it’s a viable route to allow the PlayBook to be all encompassing? Or would doing this make RIM and the Playbook be too open and be too much of a risk?

Today, we announced that HP will contribute our webOS software to the open source community and support its development going forward. We believe that this is the best way to ensure the benefits of webOS are accessible to the largest possible ecosystem.

Since we announced the discontinuation of our webOS devices last August, the executive team has been working to determine the best path forward for this highly respected software. We looked at all the options in the market today and we see a clear need for a platform that is both open and has a single integrated stack.

webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected, and scalable. By providing webOS to the open source community and other hardware vendors we have the potential to fundamentally change the landscape.

HP engineers, partners, other developers and hardware manufacturers will be able to contribute to the development of webOS. Together, we have an opportunity to make it the foundation of a new generation of devices, applications and services to address the rapidly evolving demands of both consumers and enterprises.

I would like to thank the webOS team for continuing your efforts under very difficult circumstances during these last couple of months. Your dedication is very much appreciated.

This is a very positive move for the development of our people, our software and HP overall.
