You can have it lock the screen through the icon or when the screen shuts off which is nice. It has a slick design so it looks like its a native app.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.0.6149 Developer Beta Brings Loads of Goodies!

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 09:26 PM PST

Gift PlayBook

We are just starting to play with the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.0.6149 developer beta and you can see that RIM is starting to make some nice changes. My buddy Shahriyar pointed out to me that it supports Bluetooth headsets along with auto correct outside of bridge. He also noticed that it scores a 308 on the HTML5 test site.

Keep in mind this update may patch the current DingleBerry jailbreak so if you have been relying on that you may want to wait until we get confirmation one way or the other.

app-world-content-ratings-5

RIM has made their new version of App World publicly available tonight. This new version adds all of the features we have been telling you about like begging/gifting apps and Wi-Fi use along with content ratings. The update should also fix a few other bugs but RIM still has a way to go.

You can download the latest version of App World from your BlackBerry at www.blackberry.com/appworld

Sprint Rolling Out OS 7.1 for Bold 9930 & Torch 9850 – Curve 9350 Coming Soon?

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 09:15 PM PST

BlackBerry 7 Family Part 2

Sprint has quietly started rolling out OS 7.1 for both the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and the BlackBerry Torch 9850. My guess is that the Curve 9350 will probably follow up but maybe not today since mine is not showing an update. This OS version 7.1 adds Wi-Fi hotspot functionality along with loads of other fixes that RIM finally got around to.

To get the update just go to your Options –> Device –> Software update

RIM Earnings Call Questions and Answers Highlights & Tidbits

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 03:00 PM PST

Hey everyone,

This earnings call was ANOTHER tough pill to swallow for us RIM faithful.  I cataloged the different items that came up in the Q&A session after the earnings call. Here are the highlights:

Here are the highlights:

  • BB10 Devices hitting mid-late 2012 due to lack of integrated LTE/Dual Core chipsets
  • Starting in the beginning of 2012, RIM will be dropping an estimated $100 million per quarter
  • This $100 million will go to aggressive advertising, promotions to decrease costs of phones, discounted apps.. .pretty much everything is on the table
  • OS 2.0 still on track for February, no delays there
  • Mike and Jim are reducing their salary to $1 effective immediately
  • Mike and Jim say its impossible to be in the Smartphone/Superphone business and NOT be in the Tablet business
  • Mike and Jim repeatedly acknowledged RIM sucks in America and the $100 million dollar quarterly budget is specifically designed to address the American market
  • A lot of the right words being said… but in the end, not much new information beyond the above

Overall the tone was very subdued and clearly no one was happy.

It will be interesting to see how the aggressive ad campaign in the US of A will change things.  I don’t think anyone at RIM is crazy enough to think they can really recapture much market share, but, maybe the a NEW BIG ad campaign, combined with great phone pricing will stop the bleeding a little bit more than if RIM sat back and did nothing.

Jim and Mike also gave the impression the discounts on the Playbook will continue into the new year and that they are 100% viewing the Playbook as a development base for the BB10 phones.  I agree with this sentiment and I think its an overall good move.

RIM is going for broke and their words suggest they want to get it RIGHT this time as opposed to rushing something.

RIM Confirms BlackBerry 10 Phones Only Coming in Second Half of 2012

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 02:52 PM PST

BlackBerry 10 smartphones

RIM just delivered some sad news during the BlackBerry earnings call that is currently going on. Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis confirmed that BlackBerry 10 phones will not be available until the second half of 2012. They say this is because the BlackBerry 10 LTE phones are held up by a chipset that will not be available until Mid-2012. They say this chipset is needed to offer the battery life that customers expect.

While some of that is definitely true it is really going to hit RIM hard that they are missing the first half of 2012. The story is still developing so expect more…

Thanks Phil for the screenshot!

* Total of cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments of $1.5 billion

Q3 Results:

Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 was $5.2 billion, up 24% from $4.2 billion in the previous quarter and down 6% from $5.5 billion in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 79% for hardware, 19% for service and 2% for software and other revenue. During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 14.1 million BlackBerry smartphones and approximately 150,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

“Despite the challenges faced in the third quarter, the BlackBerry subscriber base grew to almost 75 million customers around the world. In addition, RIM launched a range of new BlackBerry 7 based smartphones globally and introduced holiday promotions that helped drive growth in the installed base of BlackBerry PlayBook users,” said Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEOs at Research In Motion. “RIM continues to have strong technology, unique service capabilities and a large installed base of customers, and we are more determined than ever to capitalize on our strengths to overcome the recent execution challenges surrounding product launches and the resulting financial performance. As part of our commitment to improving our performance to better meet the expectations of shareholders and customers, we continue to evaluate ways to improve in several areas of the Company’s operations. It may take some time to realize the benefits of these efforts and the platform transition that we are undertaking, but we continue to believe that RIM has the right set of strengths and capabilities to maintain a leading role in the mobile communications industry.”

The Company’s GAAP net income for the quarter was $265 million, or $0.51 per share diluted, compared with GAAP net income of $329 million, or $0.63 per share diluted, in the prior quarter and GAAP net income of $911 million, or $1.74 per share diluted, in the same quarter last year. Adjusted net income for the third quarter was $667 million, or $1.27 per share diluted. Adjusted net income and adjusted diluted earnings per share exclude the impact of pre-tax charges of $54 million ($40 million after tax) to revenue related to the service interruption experienced in the third quarter, $485 million ($356 million after tax) for the PlayBook inventory provision taken in the third quarter and $7 million ($6 million after tax) for the Company’s cost optimization program that was implemented in the second quarter of fiscal 2012.Q4 Outlook

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2012 ending March 3, 2012 is expected to be in the range of $4.6-$4.9 billion. Gross margin percentage for the fourth quarter is expected to be approximately 38%. BlackBerry smartphone shipments are expected to be between 11 million and 12 million units. RIM Reporting Q3 Fiscal 2012 Results Today at 5PM EST

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 07:45 AM PST

RIM Stock

RIM is going to have a pretty interesting earnings call today at 5PM EST. They recently issued a revised forecast for this quarter and the year saying that Q4 will not exceed shipments of Q3. The RIM stock is currently the lowest it has been in 7 years which is pretty crazy and is down 74% for the year. RIM really needs to start hitting investors hard with proof and execution showing how they plan on getting out of this slump and instilling confidence. We all know RIM has a plan for BB10 but RIM will need to wow investors.

You can join the conference call yourself from RIM's website today at 5PM. We will recap what is said once RIM releases the results.
