RIM Explains How to Use BlackBerry Tag NFC Features in OS 7.1

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 02:20 PM PST

 nfc-1 nfc-2

While most carriers have not yet released OS 7.1 RIM added a slick new feature for NFC in the OS update. They are calling it BlackBerry Tag and it essentially lets you do things like send files to your friends device by tapping your phones. What this does is essentially add a new option in the "Send to" menu called Tag that syncs over NFC and then initiates a quick secure Bluetooth connection. So say you want to send a video, picture, or contact card to a friend who also has an NFC BlackBerry on OS 7.1 you can just select the tag option and tap your phones together.

nfc-3 nfc-4

It will ask you to turn on NFC when you select the Tag option in the send menu but the reciever will need to turn it on manually. Cory from RIM has been kind enough to walk us through a regular scenario of how we can use BlackBerry Tag now. Check out their tutorial and let us know how it works for you.

As we mentioned before RIM plans on using BlackBerry Tag to allow you to:

  • Invite your friend to BBM
  • Share contact information
  • Share content from the media applications
  • Share voice notes
  • Share documents from within Documents To Go®
  • Share a URL from the browser
  • Create Bluetooth® pairing with ease
  • Transfer files

PlayBook OS 2.0 Advertisements Showing up in Stores in the UK

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 09:57 AM PST

The guys over at N4BB spotted something interesting today. It seems like stores in the UK are starting to put up advertisements for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0. This is definitely a good sign that the PlayBook OS 2.0 launch is just right around the corner. Now, considering that the PlayBook OS 2.0′s official release should be just weeks away, things are looking positive!

PlayBook OS 2.0 will finally bring some features that we have been patiently waiting for: native PIM apps with email, calendar, contacts, and a video store. The update will also bring a revamped UI and quite a few other improvements. I am pretty confident that they won;t let us down. I’m excited, are you? With DevCon on going, hopefully we do get some nice little positive surprises!!

PlayBook OS 2.0 Displays Arriving in UK Stores

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 09:54 AM PST

 PlayBook 2.0

We know that the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 update is right around the corner and RIM plans on doing a big refresh campaign for it with its new features. N4BB has scored an image of a store in the UK showing off the PlayBook OS 2.0 features with its new email, contacts, calendar, and video store. I am hoping RIM has finally also thrown in a store demo mode so that devices stay up to date and do not get vandalized. Lucas also noticed that RIM's latest blog post about free PlayBooks for Android developers shows a refreshed look for App World.

Updated App World

Anybody else excited to see PlayBook OS 2.0 launch?

RIM Shares How They Torture BlackBerrys to Test Their Durability

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 08:36 AM PST

 BlackBerry Torture Testing

I love when RIM gives us some insight into how they make our favorite devices. Their latest interview is with Ryan who is a a Hardware Engineering Technician in the Hardware Support Lab at RIM. His job is to test BlackBerrys to ensure they are durable and reliable. The best part is he shares some videos of how they perform some of these tests. This sort of reminds me of the testing demos you see at Ikea stores where they open and close a drawer 2 million times.

Check out the videos below but here are some of the tests RIM performs on devices:

  • Moisture Ingress test to see where water enters a BlackBerry
  • Digital signal tests
  • Drop testing – dropping every BlackBerry hundreds of times to make revisions that improve its design. (Its cool how BlackBerrys are actually designed to absorb the impact wave and absorb the shock)
  • Bend testing to see what will happen if people sit on their BlackBerrys. (They know who you are!
  • Electrostatic discharge test to make sure you don’t shock your BlackBerry dead.

Check out the videos of the BlackBerrys being tortured in these tests below. Warning: The videos below depict graphic violence against BlackBerrys.

Ekboo Encrypts Your BBM Chats for Total Privacy & Security

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 08:11 AM PST

Ekboo encrypted chat

I tend to not discuss national secrets over BBM but there seems to be quite a bit of demand for encrypted communications. As we mentioned before BBM conversations are not encrypted but are rather scrambled using a key that is found on all BlackBerrys. Ekboo has decided to take things quite a few steps further using RIM's BBM SDK to create some serious privacy protection when both of you have the Ekboo chat app installed using their BBM plugin.

Here is a breakdown of some of the features:

  • 512 bit RSA encryption
  • You invite friends to chat over Ekboo and it automatically exchanges encryption keys on the fly
  • It still has the read/delivered notifications of BBM
  • Textbombs let you send temporary messages for a preset time and then are automatically deleted. You can make a single message delete or the whole chat.
  • Remote clear chat lets you delete the conversation off your friends device remotely
  • A Panic button lets you select a key to hold down which will cancel and close all your current conversations
  • You can put a pin lock code on Ekboo to lock others out
  • When you reboot every conversation is automatically deleted

So what do you have to pay to be a super spy? Ekboo is asking for $14.99 per user in App World with a 30 day trial available. More details are available at www.ekboo.com and they say encrypted file transfers are coming soon. I am hoping this will be used for good purposes like allowing users to bypass government oppression and censorship instead of nefarious purposes… Let us know if you plan on using it and what for.

RIM Finishes BlackBerry Theme Studio Unofficial Hack Tutorial for BlackBerry 7 Themes

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 05:51 AM PST

Theme Builder 6

We told you last week that RIM had started an official tutorial that was essentially endorsing the current way theme developers are hacking Theme Studio 6 themes onto BlackBerry 7 devices. Thomas let us know that Garett from RIM has now completed the third part of what seems to be the full three part tutorial so you can now read it all. This seems really similar to what theme devs were already doing but check it out for yourself and let us know!

Here are the three parts of RIM's tutorial:

Posted: 06 Feb 2012 04:42 AM PST

Emulator

Trevor Nunes has updated his awesome SEGA Genesis Megadrive emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook over the weekend. This new version adds the key rom cycling feature that I have been waiting for. It also adds some other goodies you will appreciate. It looks like Trevor is actively working on the port so hopefully more goodies are coming!

Features include:

  • rom cycling!
  • new gfx and gfx effects buttons
  • tv icon selects scanline, blur, interlace ‘tv’ modes
  • start button on right hand side of screen, top left is rom cycler …
  • HQX button cycles through HQX scaling but currently not scaled, so kind of useless ;-)
  • missing roms message sticks on screen if no roms are found
  • dirs are created for you

Check out the details here on Trevors Blog where you can also find the download links for PlayBook OS1 and OS2.
