Anyone who loves gadgets probably knows well that gadgets and hard surfaces are not the best of friends, specially for some of those glossy/glassy toys. BlackBerry devices are built tougher, and beautiful but that does not mean they will not get damage if you do not take care of them. That is where Otterbox is usually comes in, they offer protective solutions for your favorite devices, and a style that fits your needs.  They offer several different types of cases depending on your needs. The OtterBox commuter case is by far one of my favorite designs from OtterBox.  It offers protection without making the device uncomfortable or bulky. This design allows you to easily place in your pockets, purse, or simply carry it on your hands.

Design: The Commuter series is a "sleek, slim and tough" design, featuring a silicon mid-layer that hugs the devices with access to all your ports, and a solid outer layer shell that encases your devices. Combined with a self adhesive screen protector the three layers form a strong protective case that keep the device looking like new, till it is time to move on to the next BlackBerry.

Placing/Removing the case: The commuter series features a two piece easy to assemble; one is the silicone mid-layer that wraps your device and the second piece is the smooth outer layer shell that wraps around the BlackBerry device.  OtterBox has also included a piece of protective film that is easy to apply to your BlackBerry screen. The commuter slick design allows the device to be protected without adding too much bulkiness to it.  This combination makes it extremely easy to place your BlackBerry in the case as well as removing. The silicon part is very flexible allowing the user to easily apply it around the BlackBerry device. Once the silicon part is in place the hard shell piece snaps around the BlackBerry with little effort.  Removing the case is just as easily and allows the user to simply apply a small amount of force to remove.

FEATURES

  • OtterBox RBB4-9900S accommodates BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 and 9930 smartphones
  • SCREEN PROTECTION: Self-adhering clear protective film
  • (cleaning cloth and installation card included)
  • INNER LAYER: Durable silicone absorbs bump and shock
  • OUTER LAYER: Polycarbonate shell protects from impact
  • Access to all side button features
  • Silicone plugs allow access to all ports

This case makes a perfect case for those that travel or want a good case when they are out and about. If you have more than one case your use for your device the commuter case is also easy to place your device into it or remove it. The only thing that might keep you from not liking these case is if you like a case with a belt clip, but they got you cover with the defender series if that is more your style.

RIM Shares Fundamentals Guide for Using jQuery with WebWorks on BlackBerry

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 12:30 PM PST

jQuery

Erik O from RIM's Developer Relations Team shared a new fundamentals guide that RIM has created for WebWorks developers. This new guide seems to cover everything from the basic jQuery knowledge of what the framework does to getting a hello world app created from the provided sample. It has something for beginning devs to intermediate devs though the resource list is a handy one even for hardcore developers.

Check out the full Fundamentals Guide from jQuery to WebWorks from Oros & Mahrens on the official BlackBerry Forums.

MobileVoip App Lets You Make VoIP Calls Over Wi-Fi Using Certain SIP Services

 MobileVoip MobileVoip2

Finarea has released a relatively nice looking VoIP client that supposedly works with 55 or so different VoIP providers. My gut feeling is that these VoIP brands look awfully similar to be actual different companies but the service actually works. It allows you to make VoIP calls over Wi-Fi connections (no 3G VoIP support) and it seems to work for most. There are some people complaining in the reviews but I had a friend try it and call me and he had no problem.

MobileVoip3 MobileVoip4

The MobileVoip app is free in App World but you need to buy minutes from one of the VoIP carriers supported by the app. Check out the details here in App World.

Kudos to Shahzoor @BBin.in for pointing this one out!

It has been awhile since XIMAD released their popular Brain Cube game for BlackBerry and then made a free version available. Now Boris from XIMAD has let me know that their sequel, Brain Cube Reloaded, is their best game by far. It also supports BlackBerry OS 7 so you can play it on the latest devices. They even created a promo video for the new Brain Cube Reloaded:

RIM Releases Analytics Service WebWorks Extension for Smartphones

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 08:44 AM PST

BlackBerry Analytics Service

RIM released their useful analytics service awhile back but limited to Java developers on BlackBerry smartphones. Now a member of RIM's developer relations team, Tim Windsor, has released a new WebWorks extension for smartphone app developers to track analytics. That means devs can use it to track events like clicks and purchases and everything in between.

The extension is available here in RIM's GitHub WebWorks Community APIs repo. Integration is pretty easy and explained in the readme. Kudos to Pelegri for pointing it out!

The Podcasts app for BlackBerry has been a bit buggy searching for new feeds for awhile now so hopefully this update fixes that.  FEMA APP4 FEMA APP2 FEMA APP3

FEMA, the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, rounded out their app portfolio this week with the release of a BlackBerry smartphone & PlayBook app. Both apps seem to be WebWorks apps which probably helped them launch them together. The apps contain emergency preparedness information for different types of disasters along with loads of information including:

  • an interactive checklist for emergency kits
  • a section to plan emergency meeting locations
  • information on how to stay safe and recover after a disaster
  • a map with FEMA Disaster Recovery Center locations (one-stop centers where disaster survivors can access key relief services) and Shelters
  • general ways the public can get involved before and after a disaster
  • and the FEMA blog

A friend of mine recently mentioned to me that Ion Factory has some VERY slick PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphone cases. They are very bold looking and I was shocked that it was the first time I had heard of them. For example, they have this slick carbon cover for the PlayBook along with a carbon jacket for the 9900. Also slick are their Bold Ring and Grand Prix Bold Ring cases.

Check out their whole line here or some samples below:
