Jingu has created quite a few popular social BlackBerry apps in the past and their latest one takes things in a different direction. Jingu Text replaces the letters in the text you type out with stylized equivalents. In other words 'whats up?' turns into 'ωнαт’ѕ υρ?' I tried the app and it works nicely though it is a bit slow.

Jingu Text comes in both a free and premium $0.99 full version for you to check out:

RIM Gives an Update on PlayBook Developer Offer – 6,225 Apps Submitted

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 12:26 AM PST

PlayBook 2.0 Question

RIM's offer of a free BlackBerry PlayBook to developers who submit PlayBook apps to App World is almost over. We have been getting reports from developers who are in many different stages of the approval process asking if there were any updates and thankfully RIM has finally offered one. My buddy Alex Kinsella broke down some of the main questions and answers along with stats on the BlackBerry Developer Blog. Here is a quick summary:

  • Your app may be held up because you did not sign the code or your app targets the wrong OS version (Must target OS 2.0) !,200 app submissions have one of these issues and RIM is waiting for devs to fix them.
  • As of yesterday 6,225 apps have been submitted. 4,777 have submitted at least one app and received the email saying they completed the first step for the offer.
  • 1,827 apps have been approved and 1,283 devs have been asked for their shipping address
  • Over 3,000 apps remain to be reviewed
  • RIM is currently averaging 250 app reviews a day but have added staff to be able to review 400 per day.

Lastly if you have not received an email from RIM yet check your Spam/Junk folder for an email from RIM or TMG Ideas.

Interview With PlayBook Product Manger Michael Clewley

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 03:03 PM PST

best-buy-playbook-os-2-602x505I had a chance to talk to Michael Clewley Product Manger about what PlayBook OS 2.0 brings to the PlayBook community including users and developers. The PlayBook OS 2.0 has been out for over a week now, according to a new report a large percentage of PlayBook owners have upgraded to the new OS which is good news. Here are some of the questions we asked Michael:

How did you guys decide who stayed up late to make a successful launch?

We are a big company we have folks in different time zones around the world to be able to ensure that things launched successfully. There were those who did have to wake up earlier, but we have a really dedicated team that want the company to succeed. People have passion for the job and go the extra mile.

Did you guys have a code name for the OS launch?

No, it was OS 2.0, we didn't need a code name for it.

I can see that specially with us reporting about it almost every day.

What is your favorite new feature on 2.0?

The social everywhere integration, being able to see the social integration in the message app, the contacts, calendar, even in video chat. Being able to see who I have relationships with and able to see what is going on in their lives.

I see the different inputs from all the companies RIM has acquired, and they're are in different parts of the world, how did you manage that?

Yes, they are geographically spread all over the world, we have Tungle in Montreal, Gist in different parts of the U.S, and we have TAT in Sweden we been very successful at organizing the teams to build a fantastic products from various regions across the globe.

Going forward with RIM transition to BB10, how does the PlayBook and OS 2.0 fit in the picture?

PlayBook is essentially the foundation for BlackBerry 10, it is the OS that will evolve into BB10.. there is a lot of pieces that will stay the same in BB10 that come from OS 2.0. All the platforms support that we have in OS 2.0  is there and will continue to be there as we evolve into OS 2.0. QNX allows BlackBerry to developer to built great native applications, and the social experience will continue to grow as well in BB10.

Are we going to be seeing similar OS on both devices the PlayBook and BB10 devices?

Yes, that is the goal with BB10, is essentially "a single Platform and OS for multiple devices".

What did you guys do different with developers to have the OS 2.0 launch, with apps flowing to app world daily?

We launch the OS 2.0 developer beta back at DEVCON America in October 2011, and since then we had two other in Asia, and Amsterdam, and since then we just continued to grow dev. interest in OS 2.0 by improving beta releases and worked with Handster to bring a catalog of Android applications into the store front and since the beginning February we ran a promotion for developers who submitted an application into app world before the end of this month will get a PlayBook. So we are deeply committed to the developer community to keeping them engage and PlayBook OS 2.0 is the foundation for BB10 so the success they have now will only continue success in the BlackBerry going forward.

What you are saying is Devs. should look forward to the transition where they will have more opportunist by releasing an app on both devices?

Exactly

With this new OS it is easy to be socially connected with contacts, video chat, specifically video chat offers a great experience, and an improvement in 2.0!

This an area that we paid attention ensuring that we scan your address book to scan for BB ID addresses, BlackBerry has always stayed a step ahead of the user on what they want to do and video chat is no exception and we detect video IDs that are active to video chat.

You know lately in the news we have seen Apps get in trouble by accessing users private information without user consent. As far as the PlayBook OS that is not the case right?

We are not uploading any information to the cloud is all being done locally in the device, and is not uploaded to a cloud.

can you elaborate on the new browser, is a far better browser than most of the other mobile browsers out there?

The team has done a lot of work to continue to keep up to date and ensure we are in the leading edge from that perspective as well as some of our own optimization and the power that comes with the hardware in the PlayBook. We essentially achieve the top rated browser in HTM5 in both mobile and tablet devices. We rank in the top 3 for desktop devices on HTML5.

As far as using HTML5, many developers are interested in developing with it, how do you see RIM using that to their advantage?

HTML5 is an excellent way for developers to target multiple platforms, is definitely one of the recommendations we give devs today who want to develop for BlackBerry OS, and our PlayBook. Is a flexible language, allows devs. to developer rich application and easy to test anywhere on the devices or the Browser. BlackBerry is able to cater to this developers.

For developers what are some key points you want to point out to them?

Depending on what type of developers they are, the conversation and the way I approach them will vary. If they have a native app in another OS I would approach them on how easy it would be to port their application to the PlayBook OS. As a web developer we talk about how powerful the browser is, and the capability including things under the hood, like webGL.

If you are on Android I tell them a story about a Tweet I saw yesterday of a developer who had more downloads in 24 hours when they ported their App to the PlayBook than they did in android in 24 days. Developers targeting BlackBerry is real, they are successful and making more money, regardless if is BlackBerry OS or PlayBook OS.

For new users what if any tips you can give them on using the PlayBook?

For users there are a lot of great things they can learn with the tutorial out of the box. We have a great app on app world called discover now that allows the user to continue to learn more on the device to maximize the experience. Is a great thing to see the social community educating users on what they can do as well.

So there you have it guys, if PlayBook 2.0 is a good indication of where BlackBerry 10 is headed, I can't wait.

LensBoost Adds OS 6.0 Support to its Image Filtering App

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 11:49 AM PST

LensBoost2 LensBoost3

LensBoost by Mblware has been one of the more popular image filtering apps for BlackBerry smartphones. It riding the craze started by Instagram and seems to be doing a nice job. Originally when LensBoost launched it was limited to OS 7.0+ but this new update that came over the weekend lowers that requirement a bit. You can now run LensBoost on OS 6.0 devices though it will run a bit slower from what I hear.

Check out LensBoost for $1.99 in App World

Unannounced BlackBerry Curve 9320 Caught on Camera

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 07:41 AM PST

blackberry curve 9320 pics

We saw some spec sheets leak for two upcoming BlackBerry Curve devices leak a bit back. Both the BlackBerry Curve 9320 and 9220 are targeted at emerging markets and that is exactly where they were spotted. Rajat @BGR.in managed to catch the yet to be announced BlackBerry Curve 9320 in two pictures showing off the device. He remarks that the "9320 feels just perfect – neither too tiny, nor too large." The only differences between the 9220 and 9320 is the lack of 3G and camera in the 9220. The 9320 also has a BBM shortcut button on the left side.

The device will run OS 7.1 and easily lasts over a day of heavy calling on 2G and pricing for both devices seems to be targeted at emerging markets where phones are not subsidized.

Carrier Billing Accounts for 34% of App World Paid Downloads

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 07:32 AM PST

App World

RIM released some more numbers around BlackBerry App World at MWC that get very interesting if you compare them with their previous announcement earlier this week. In a slide deck at MWC Peter Valin, Sr Marketing Manager of BlackBerry App World at RIM, showed a breakdown of global paid downloads by payment type. The slide shows that carrier billing accounts for 34% of paid downloads with PayPal taking 23% and credit cards getting the lion share at 43%.

App World2  App World4

The interesting part is that carrier billing is only available on 40 carriers in 34 countries. That means carrier billing is taking a third of payments even though BlackBerry App World is available in 164 markets. That may be in part because of RIM making carrier billing the default payment options but still its significant that making purchases easier through the carrier drives sales.

App World5 App World3

Another interesting tidbit was that since the launch of BBM connected apps in July of 2011 just 568 BBM Connected apps have generated over 140 million downloads… In other words developers should get their apps BBM connected!

RIM “Committed to Helping Our Developers Transition to BlackBerry 10”

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 07:15 AM PST

 BlackBerry Transition22

I am not sure what to make of this commitment by Tim Neil, RIMs Director of Application Platform & Tools Product Management. In the same slide deck from Mobile World Congress Developer Day he points out that RIM is "committed to helping our developers with the transition to BlackBerry 10." That is a pretty strong statement from RIM since they have not really provided a direct path from BlackBerry 5/6/7 to PlayBook OS 2.0 yet beyond offering HTML5.

BlackBerry Transition2

I am very curious to see what Tools, docs, best practices, and support RIM will be offering developers to make the transition. Let us know if you learn more or find more details!

PlayBook Makes Up 22% of Paid App Downloads in App World

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 06:42 AM PST

RIM shared this little tidbit during a presentation at Mobile World Congress and it really has me wondering. According to them BlackBerry PlayBook apps made up 22% of paid downloads in App World from November 1st until February 1st. That is mind blowing when you consider that there are 75 million+ BlackBerry smartphone users and an unknown number of PlayBook owners… If developers needed another reason for putting effort into making an awesome PlayBook app then look no further…

RIM Lays Out BlackBerry Platform Roadmap – BB10 to Add Super App Capabilities

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 06:36 AM PST

 Platform Roadmap2

During a presentation at MWC Tim Neil, RIMs Director of Application Platform & Tools Product Management (Here at Slide 26), laid out a platform roadmap for BlackBerry ranging from BlackBerry OS 7 through the PlayBook to BlackBerry 10. This is the first time I have seen anything in writing from RIM about this and I found it enlightening. I recommend you check out the slides for yourself but here are some of the highlights I can derive from the slides:

Platform Roadmap

  • BlackBerry 10 is where the Cascades UI framework fits into RIM's roadmap. Devs are waiting for this to easily create User Interfaces.
  • BlackBerry 10 is shown as where Cascades/TAT meets HTML5 for "SuperApp Integration"
  • RIM will be adding the BBM Social Platform and Push services in BlackBerry 10
  • Cascades will allow both 2D and 3D elements in app UIs
  • Cascades promises built in signature effects

I am hoping RIM details more about the SuperApp API's they plan on adding in BlackBerry 10 shortly. Hopefully we will see a beta that is available for the PlayBook soon!

Nobex Radio BBM Integration Increased Daily Downloads by 50%

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 06:21 AM PST

Nobex Radio Downloads

RIM's opening up of BBM with their BBM Social Platform is paying off in spades for developers. The latest example of that comes from the popular streaming radio app Nobex Radio. During a presentation at MWC they said they did not have exact statistics on how much of their growth is attributed to BBM integration and viral distribution. On the other hand since they added BBM integration they saw the average daily number of downloads increase by 52%. That is compared to the usual increase of no more than 10% when they released updated versions in the past.

Now that RIM has added a bit more origin statistics into the BBM SDK allowing developers to see if App downloads are being driven by BBM I am curious to see what can be verifiably attributed to the BBM SDK. Check out Nobex Radio's MWC slide deck here for all the info.

Hurry! Free PlayBooks for BlackBerry Developers Promotion Ends March 2nd

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 05:27 AM PST

IMG_5767

RIM extended their promotion offering free BlackBerry PlayBooks to developers who submitted BlackBerry PlayBook apps but that new deadline is fast approaching. Developers must submit their apps by March 2nd to be considered. The extended dates required developers to register as an App World Vendor by February 15th so if you have not done so already I am not sure if there is a way around that. All vendors (new and existing) then have until 11:59 EST on March 2nd to submit their application to BlackBerry App World to get a free PlayBook.

Check out the details here
