Free qPDF Viewer is a Solid PDF Reader Alternative for the PlayBook

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 12:50 PM PDT

qPDF

The PDF viewer on the PlayBook is pretty good but it is missing some ancilliary features that I wish RIM would add soon. Until then qPDF has stepped in by Qoppa Software. They have ported their Android apps to the PlayBook and their free qPDF Viewer is a solid back to the PlayBook PDF viewer. Sadly it still does not remember your last page but hopefully they will add that. qPDF also has a premium version called qPDF Notes ($9.99 in App World) that supposedly allows you to also edit PDF's but I tried the free trial and it is very buggy.

Free Google URL Shortener Makes “Goo.gl” Links

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:46 AM PDT

Google URL Shortener

David pointed out to me a quick short URL app that was just released in App World called Google URL Shortener. The small app simply adds a new menu item in the BlackBerry Browser allowing you to create a shortened URL using Google's shortening service. That will create URLs using goo.gl urls and will automatically put them in the clipboard for you to paste wherever you need.

Free Seagull Poop Onslaught Game for the PlayBook

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 08:39 AM PDT

Seagull Poop

I am truly at a loss for words. The developer of Seagull Poop Onslaught, Allen Hwang, summed up this game in three words "SEAGULL. POOP. TERROR." Its not much but that won't stop you from laughing your head off as you try to tap the poop before it gets to the bottom of your screen.

Win a Chance to Learn PlayBook Native Game Development from RIM in NYC & San Francisco!

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 08:24 AM PDT

PlayBook Gaming Development COntest

RIM is really starting to ramp up their campaign to jumpstart native development on the PlayBook. They let us know that this time they are focusing on BlackBerry PlayBook Native Gaming Development with a brand new contest. RIM is offering developers a chance to win one of 12 spots at BlackBerry Native Gaming Development training in either San Francisco (March 28/29) or New York City (April 9/10). This will be an intense two day hands on training from RIM on the fundamentals of the BlackBerry Native SDK for gaming and each attendee will also receive a free PlayBook.

The bootcamp conference will cover how to:

  • Set up a development environment to create a Native BlackBerry PlayBook tablet game
  • Create, compile package and deploy a Native (C/C++) BlackBerry PlayBook tablet game
  • Incorporate 3rd party libraries into your app
  • Interact with different BlackBerry PlayBook tablet components such as accelerometer, keyboard, etc.
  • Have a solid understanding of the available native networking components
  • Setup a system for in-game purchases and subscriptions
  • Use the Scoreloop™ SDK to share gamer scores and achievements

The contest is open to residents of the US along with Canada (excluding Quebec) and must have C or C++ experience with OpenGL experience being a plus but not required. Check out the full details at blackberrydevtraining.com where you can make your pitch to RIM describing why you want to go, outline your C or C++ developer experience and demonstrate that you are capable of building, testing and deploying a mobile application to the BlackBerry App World storefront. More details are also available at the RIM developer blog.

Preorder the Jorno Folding Bluetooth Keyboard for March 31st Shipping

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 07:55 AM PDT

Journo Foldable Keyboard

In our discussion of the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook Mini Keyboard case combo Papped mentioned another alternative called Jorno. This yet to be released product called Jorno is a foldable Bluetooth Keyboard that is set to work with both BlackBerry smartphones and a whole slew of other devices including most likely support for the PlayBook. Personally I will be getting the BlackBerry PlayBook Mini Keyboard case for the mouse gestures and 30 day battery life but it does not hurt to have options!

Check out Jorno's foldable keyboard which is available now for preorder for $99 for shipping on March 31st. This device has seen a few delays over time but hopefully this time it will launch on schedule.

A Maze Ninja! Labyrinth Game for BlackBerry Smartphones.

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 07:01 AM PDT

Maze Ninja Maze Ninja2

I have been a huge fan of BerryBlow's Labyrinth game for BlackBerry smartphones for years but there have not been many similar games. Jerry pointed out to me Mobile Reason has a game called A Maze Ninja! that was released last year with similar gameplay. It offers up 30 levels of accelerometer controlled puzzle play with you guiding your ball around the maze. They promise in the description to add 50 more levels but it has been awhile since the game has been updated.

You can find A Maze Ninja! for $1.99 in App World.

NOTE: Since the game uses the accelerometer it only works on devices that have one which is most of the BlackBerry 7 devices, Storm series, and Torch series devices.

Sketch With Friends is a Real Time Multiplayer Pictionary Game for the PlayBook

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 06:50 AM PDT

Sketch with Friends Sketch with Friends3

Xlabz let us know about their latest BlackBerry PlayBook game that is also available for iOS and Android called Sketch with Friends. It is a real time multiplayer word guessing game based on the classic Pictionary and Charades games and can be played cross platform. You draw something while others guess what your sketch is and vice cersa. It is definitely nice to see a solid game like this come cross platform.

Check out Sketch With Friends in App World for $1.99 or check out the iPad demo trailer below to get an idea of how the gameplay works. Personally I am hoping they add a free trial soon!
