Free OverDrive Media Console for the PlayBook Gets Small Update

Posted: 14 Mar 2012 01:55 AM PDT

OverDrive OverDrive2 OverDrive3

Thomas let us know that OverDrive has updated their popular OverDrive Media Console eBook and audio book app for the PlayBook. The app is a port of their Android app that runs in the PlayBook Android player so its nice to see it getting bug fixes instead of just being left as is. There are still areas of the app that need improvement which can cause it to hang so I hope they keep working on it.

Official OS 7.1.0.284 From T-Mobile for The 9900 and 9810

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 08:31 PM PDT

ScreenShot_2012-03-13_21-28-59_by_s4bbT-Mobile has officially made OS 7.1 available for both the Bold 9900 and the Torch 9810. The OS brings quite a few features you been waiting for. My favorite is Wi-Fi calling. Note that if  you are using Wi-Fi calling and you step too far from the signal your call will drop unlike the old UMA technology where it would hand off the call to the wireless network. You can download the OS by pointing your browser directly to the T-Mobile webpage at this link and select your device.

You can also do the upgrade over the air but if you are running a beta OS it may not work.

New features:

  • Wi-Fi Calling
  • Mobile HotSpot/USB tethering: (I was recently told by T-Mobile that with my 5GB plan I don't have to pay extra like the other carriers may try to make you do.
  • Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS): A personalized emergency alert system designed to alert people of nearby threats or emergencies.
  • BBM Music
  • Bing search
  • BlackBerry Device Analyzer with this you can use it to analyze your device battery drains, network, GPS, and much more.

Thanks to Sruly for the screenshot and letting us know.

BlackBerry Wallet Gets Small Update to v1.2.2.6 – No Change Log

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 03:00 PM PDT

BlackBerry Wallet BlackBerry Wallet2

I am only mentioning this one because I am curious what has changed. After not seeing an update for over a year RIM has updated BlackBerry Wallet to v1.2.2.6. This new version is just a small bump over the previous v1.2.1.2 and as usual there is no change log or even a change in the documentation release notes. I always thought that BlackBerry Wallet was a promising app that RIM never fully developed into a proper feature but I do know some people who still use it religiously.

Check out the updated BlackBerry Wallet in App World. Thanks Frank Chen for the tip!

Whatsapp

WhatsApp just updated their BlackBerry smartphone app to v2.7.5032 from v2.7.4675 that was recently released. I am hoping this update fixes some of the bugs that cropped up in the previous release where they revamped the UI.

Check it out at www.whatsapp.com/ota and let us know what you find. Kudos to @berryfornoobs for the tip!

Free Reddit in Motion by Domisy Released for the PlayBook (Native)

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 01:13 PM PDT

Reddit in Motion Reddit in Motion2

We mentioned Reddit is Fun being ported to the PlayBook using the Android player but Daniel let us know that there is another alternative for the PlayBook. Domisy has released Reddit in Motion as a native app for the PlayBook. It does not have all the features of Reddit is Fun (Login support mostly) but it is way faster and takes advantage of the PlayBook browser.

Features include:

  • Browse all reddits, and subreddits
  • Fun and easy to use ui designed specifically for the Playbook
  • Supports both landscape and portrait orientations
  • Search capability
  • Full web view for watching videos and flash content
  • Coming soon: In-app log-in support

One of the main things holding it back is in app login support but hopefully that is coming soon. Until then you can check out Reddit in Motion free in App World.

Free Reddit is Fun Android App Ported to the PlayBook

ZV let me know that the popular Android Reddit website reader, Reddit is Fun, has been ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The app is not as good as a native app but it is fairly feature full for regular Reddit users. It lets you login to your Reddit account and use the websites features with a relatively solid interface. Hopefully we will get a solid native app soon!

FileScout Demo’s Upcoming Wi-Fi File Sharing Plugin for Smartphones

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 08:53 AM PDT

FileScout Wifi sharing

One of my favorite features on my PlayBook is the ability to easily access my PlayBook's files from my PC over Wi-Fi. There have been a few apps that do this for smartphones but the hugely popular FileScout app is about to get a similar feature. Matthias from EmacBerry sent me this demo video of his upcoming Wi-Fi File Sharing plugin for both FileScout and FileScoutLite. It lets you easily access the content from your BlackBerry smartphone from your PC over Wi-Fi and if you are using Google Chrome you can simply drag and drop files to upload or download them.

I am not sure if it will be a premium or free plugin but we should know soon. I also asked if the app will use your current CellID to turn on Wi-Fi and sharing when you are home and Matthias confirmed that a HotSpot monitor is already integrated to turn on the Wi-Fi file server if  it sees your home Wi-Fi network. Check out the video below of the Wi-Fi server in action:

BlackBerry 7 OS Awarded TÜV Security Certification

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 08:05 AM PDT

BlackBerry Security

I am not sure if this will shock the world but RIM's BlackBerry 7 OS just got lauded for its security again by TÃœV Rheinland i-sec GmbH. This certification means that RIM's security functionality has been confirmed by yet another third party. This includes "range of security functionality", "security functionality effectiveness against non-destructive physical access", "security functionality effectiveness against access via user interfaces", and "security functionality effectiveness against access via software installed on the device (apps)." Also interesting is that TÃœV Rheinland recommended what I have been saying for ages which is "advanced secure wipe function for microSD cards that would complement the existing encryption capabilities available for external storage on BlackBerry smartphones."

Check out the announcement below from RIM:

BlackBerry 7 OS Awarded TÃœV Certification

Dusseldorf, Germany – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced that the powerful BlackBerry® 7 Operating System (OS) has been independently evaluated and awarded a security certification by TÃœV Rheinland i-sec GmbH. The TÃœV Rheinland i-sed GmbH certification attests that the security functionalities which are integrated into the BlackBerry 7 OS provide an effective protection of data processed in the device and that a satisfactory security level is met based on the configuration settings recommended by TÃœV Rheinland.
The BlackBerry 7 OS passed the checkpoint tests for "range of security functionality", "security functionality effectiveness against non-destructive physical access", "security functionality effectiveness against access via user interfaces", and "security functionality effectiveness against access via software installed on the device (apps)". TÃœV Rheinland also made suggestions for further developments such as an advanced secure wipe function for microSD cards that would complement the existing encryption capabilities available for external storage on BlackBerry smartphones.
The certification is based on tests conducted by TÃœV Rheinland as well as existing certifications including "Common Criteria EAL 4+ Maintenance Report BlackBerry® Device Software 7.0.0 v1.0 and referenced documents" and "FIPS 140-2 certification No. 1669."
"As a market leader in delivering secure, mobile solutions, RIM is committed to achieving independent, third party approvals of the BlackBerry security architecture," said Marcus Klische, BlackBerry Security Advisor at RIM. "We view security as being fundamentally important and we are proud that the BlackBerry 7 OS has been awarded with this certification."
Next Generation BlackBerry 7 OS
BlackBerry 7 powers the new generation of BlackBerry® smartphones and includes significant performance enhancements as well as many new features and functionality out of the box. It also notably features BlackBerry® Balance technology, allowing users to enjoy the full BlackBerry smartphone experience for both work and personal purposes without compromising the IT department's need for advanced security and IT controls.

RIM Makes Cosmetic Changes to App World Website Product Pages

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 07:45 AM PDT

App World Cosmetics

I am not sure exactly when RIM started rolling out this change but I did not notice it yesterday and it is not documented in RIM's App World Storefront release notes. If you check out an App World app product page today you will notice a few small cosmetic changes that RIM made with the pages. Some of these are older like listing compatibility with the PlayBook separately from smartphones but the new ones allow you to:

  • Collapse the product description by default to only show the first few lines
  • Show five of the latest reviews instead of only 2
  • Instructions for how to use the QR codes

Personally I am hoping RIM keeps on rolling out these iterative updates. Some of the key areas they need to focus for the website are:

  • Larger screenshots. Better yet use a lightbox to show them.
  • Larger font for descriptions (11pt Arial is tiny for a website)
  • Allow at least basic HTML in descriptions
  • Start using AJAX to load content instead of requiring a page reload on every link (Reviews, screenshots, etc)
  • Let developers post videos of the app
  • When PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphone apps are combined on a page detail the different release dates and version numbers

Let us know if you noticed anything else or want any other updates from RIM's App World team!

PlayBook Mini Keyboard

The signs were all pointing towards the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard for the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet launching shortly and it is almost here. RIM has made the PlayBook keyboard case official and has opened up preorders on ShopBlackBerry and TheSource.ca in Canada. All the features we reported on earlier are there along with the $119.99 price tag and a March 23rd shipping date.

The main features outlined by the BlackBerry Business blog are:

  • Multi-touch Control – BlackBerry Mini Keyboard comes equipped with a touchpad to allow you to navigate your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Tap the touchpad to simulate a mouse click, tap with two fingers to right-click, and scroll vertically using a two-finger up or down swipe. These gestures make it a breeze to get up and running and begin interacting with the device as well as apps like the Citrix Receiver.
  • Ultimate Portability – The portability of the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard with the convertible case provides a mobile computer solution that's easy to take with you. An added benefit is the screen real estate available to you when using the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard with your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
  • Security and Power – BlackBerry Mini Keyboard is designed to connect via Bluetooth® to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, and features 128-bit encryption to help keep the connection secure. You can charge your BlackBerry Mini Keyboard using your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet charger to keep things simple and remove any need for extra wires and equipment. But that's not even the best part – the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard can last up to30 days on a single charge depending on your usage!

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – March 13, 2012) -

Editors Note: A photo for this release is available via Marketwire on the picture wire of The Canadian Press and AP PhotoExpress.

Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today introduced the BlackBerry(R) Mini Keyboard(TM), a new accessory for the BlackBerry(R) PlayBook(TM) tablet.

The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard is ultra portable and comes complete with a stylish convertible case that doubles as a stand for the tablet. In addition to a full QWERTY keyboard, it offers an integrated touchpad that allows users to navigate and control the BlackBerry PlayBook as easily as using the touch screen on the tablet itself. When the keyboard is active, the PlayBook tablet’s virtual keyboard remains hidden, freeing up 100% of the display for the task at hand.

"Whether you’re typing email, creating documents, surfing the web or using other apps, the BlackBerry Mini Keyboard and its integrated carrying case is an ideal accessory," said James Poulton, Director, Advanced Accessories.

-- Powerful Multi-touch Control - The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard comes equipped with a touchpad that supports BlackBerry PlayBook gestures. The touchpad also offers additional gestures similar to the standard mouse and touchpad controls on a laptop, including a single tap to simulate a mouse click, a two finger tap to right-click, and a two-finger up or down swipe to scroll vertically. -- Ultimate Portability - The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard is ultra-portable and lightweight, measuring less than 6mm thick. -- Security - The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard connects to your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet via Bluetooth(R), and features 128-bit encryption to keep the data passed between keyboard and tablet secure. -- Powered and Ready When You Need It - The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard conveniently uses the micro-USB charger that comes with the BlackBerry PlayBook (one less charger to carry), and the keyboard battery lasts up to 30 days on a full charge. -- Third Party App Support - The BlackBerry Mini Keyboard is a great productivity enhancer. It works with the new BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 Messages, Contacts and Calendar apps as well as Documents To Go, and provides an optimal user experience for third party apps such as Citrix Receiver, which allows users to remotely access their Windows desktop and apps from the tablet.
