RIM Applies for Patent for Automatically Drafting a Blog Entry

 BlackBerry Auto Blogging Patent2

It seems like RIM want to make writing articles for BerryReview easier from BlackBerry devices. Engadget spotted a new patent filing from RIM for a "System and method for automatically drafting a blog entry." RIM describes this invention as:

There is disclosed a system and method for automatically drafting blog entries. In an embodiment, the method comprises: defining a triggering event for generating a draft blog entry; detecting the triggering event; and upon detection of the triggering event, automatically generating a draft a blog entry in a predetermined format. The triggering event may comprise, for example, capturing an image, video clip, sound clip, or a browsing a webpage having a URL on the wireless mobile device, and the method may further comprise automatically inserting the captured image, video clip, sound clip, or URL into the draft blog entry in the predetermined format together with automatically generated text. Some of the text may be generated in dependence upon the triggering event.

In other words RIM is trying to patent a faster pre-populated way to create blog posts from a "triggering event." In other words you can take a picture , sound clip, video, or even a url and it will automatically turn it into a blog post draft for you to easily post. I am guessing RIM is thinking of some sort of travel blogging app since that is what the drawing seem to indicate. Also worth noting is that the images seem to be of older BlackBerry Pearls and old BlackBerry interfaces so I wonder how old this filing is…

Check Your LinkedIn Account From Your PlayBook With inLink

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 08:37 AM PDT

 Promo

Due to the lack of a LinkedIn client for the PlayBook many people have been using the functional LinkedIn website. inLink is hoping to fill that gap by using the BBUI.js framework to create what starts to look like a BlackBerry 10 app. It allows you to check your latest info on LinkedIn along with finding and applying for jobs. You can also view your mail and quite a few other functions. In short I find it better than the sideloaded Android app I was using until now.

If you want to try another way to access LinkedIn on your PlayBook then check out inLink for $1.99 in App World.

Watch Out for BlackBerry ID Malware Email Trying to Spread PC Viruses

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 08:14 AM PDT

BlackBerry ID Malware Campaign

Every year Malware email gets more sophisticated and harder to spot. RedNightHawk let us know about one of the latest malware email campaigns spotted by Websense ThreadSeeker Network. They have been intercepting fake emails that claim the recipient has just successfully created a BlackBerry ID. According to Net-Security the email asks recipients to open an attachment "To Enjoy the full benefits of your BlackBerry ID."

The scary part is that the malicious email seems to be a copy and paste of a legitimate email from BlackBerry with an attachment containing what looks like a PC Trojan. The attachment drops other executable files and modifies the system registry to automatically start them on boot.

If you see one of these emails I highly recommend deleting it or reporting it as spam.

RIM Calls BlackBerry 10 Homescreen Widgets "Active Frames"

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 07:33 AM PDT

BlackBerry 10 Active Frames

While flipping through RIM's just released BlackBerry 10 roadmaps I ran across something interesting in the Cascades roadmap. It made mention of a new feature called Active Frames that seem to be the same homescreen widgets they have shown off in the past. Here is how RIM describes this new Active Frames feature:

The new homescreen in BB10 enables applications to show relevant UI when mimized, (sic) a feature called Active Frames. Cascades lets the developer use static images or a completely dedicated UI tree to present itself when minimized.

When we first saw these homescreen widgets in mockups and demos many asked if they were set or any application could create one. It looks like any developer will be able to use either a static image or complete UI tree when it is minimized into these active frames. It will be interesting to see what RIM has in store for these when they come out next month! From what I am hearing the Active Frame can be updated at a lower frame rate so you won’t be able to do video but you should be able to get some live content.
