RIM Announces Three More Cities for BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 10:05 AM PDT

BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour Montreal

RIM has been getting some pretty strong demand for their BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour and they are responding with some more locations. These three new stops are in Canada and the Netherlands. This will give people on the west coast of Canada a chance along with those of you in Amsterdam to get in on the ground floor of BlackBerry 10. It was also cool to see RIM finally do one of the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tours in their hometown of Waterloo.

Registration details for all three cities are at:

RIM Denies Reports That it Gave Indian Government Access to BES

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:56 AM PDT

BES Express

RIM once again had to vehemently deny senseless reports coming from mainstream Indian media that RIM has handed over BES corporate email access to the Indian Government. Anyone who knows how BES works would know that RIM does not have the keys that the government would need to be able to read BES email. Mainly because RIM cannot hand over keys it does not have access to.

The Economic Times in India cited claims from telecom department officials and documents saying that RIM gave India access to corporate emails. This is not the first time that RIM has had to deny doing this and you would think the Indian media would get the hint. Especially since every time RIM reconfirms that not only have they not done it but they CANNOT do it.

Hopefully David Paterson, RIM's head of government relations set the record straight (via Reuters) once and for all by stating that:

"The fact is that BlackBerry enterprise communications in India remain secure and encrypted. No change has been made or ever can be made in India or anywhere,"

Hopefully Indian officials will soon realize that this monitoring is relatively pointless since it can be circumvented by anyone willing to pay $10 a month for BES or other secure email solutions. Maybe their security model is counting on terrorists to be idiots?

Thorsten Heins Reiterates that RIM is Considering Licensing BlackBerry 10

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Thorsten Heins RIM

RIM and Thorsten Heins have made it clear multiple times in the past that they are considering licensing BlackBerry 10. Today the news seems to have made a resurgence thanks to an interview with Thorsten Heins with the Telegraph. When I read that section of the interview I did not think twice about it but since it is news today I thought it would be worth sharing a few tiny details that Thorsten added. We now also know that RIM is still strategically considering licensing.

Here is what Thorsten told The Telegraph:

Indeed, RIM will launch BB10 with two devices that are crucial to its survival and only one will have a keyboard. The more expensive device will be a touchscreen. Heins is keenly aware that he must get cheaper devices into the mainstream. "We don't have the economy of scale to compete against the guys who crank out 60 handsets a year. We have to differentiate and have a focused platform. To deliver BB10 we may need to look at licensing it to someone who can do this at a way better cost proposition than I can do it. There's different options we could do that we're currently investigating."

That raises the prospect of a BlackBerry phone that is made by, say, Samsung or Sony. "You could think about us building a reference system, and then basically licensing that reference design, have others build the hardware around it – either it's a BlackBerry or it's something else being built on the BlackBerry platform. We're investigating this and it's way too early to get into any details. We have to also model this from a finance perspective – that's why we're working with the financial advisers to see if we do this where would it take the company. Either we do it ourselves or we do it with a partner. But we will not abandon the subscriber base."

Thorsten Heins Shares A Wide Variaty of Details in Latest Interview

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 08:37 AM PDT

BBW12_GeneralSession_2

Earlier this week The Star published an interesting article about RIM trying to compare it with Apple's comeback but it was a bit all over the place. Its saving grace was some solid quotes from RIM executives including Thorsten Heins. Now Thorsten Heins has sat down with The Telegraph for a much longer more cohesive interview that I think is well worth reading. In it Heins discusses how BlackBerry is not "in a trough" and details some other quote-able quotes. He even shares a bit about how his BlackBerry 10 device has never reset on him and other details. Here are some of my favorite:

  • "We don't have the resources like a Microsoft; we have to place one bet and make it right; we don't want to go for an intermediate step. It comes out in the first quarter and I think a lot of people are going to be surprised."
  • He claims that the last major release, the sixth of eight milestones on the way to the final version, was the biggest and the most disruptive. "We were not happy that this had happened. But we were satisfied with the software being built. Am I disappointed? Sure I am but if you build a whole new platform it's a different size of a task."

I highly recommend checking out the full interview here at the Telegraph

Research In Motion has finally let the cat out of the bag on the release date of the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook. The 4G LTE PlayBook will be available in Canada starting August 9th! Yes, you read the title correctly. The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet you know and love is now even better, with a new model available in Canada on select carriers beginning August 9th that has built-in support for ultra-fast 4G LTE™ networks.

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – August 02, 2012) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM)(TSX: RIM) today launched the new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with built-in support for cellular networks. The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook maintains a sleek and ultra-portable form while delivering overall faster performance over the original BlackBerry PlayBook, as well as support for blazing fast 4G LTE networks. Launching in Canada first, the new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook allows customers to work more productively and connect to the Internet, as well as access their email, on-line apps, media and content, from more places than ever.

"We're excited to bring customers the first BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with support for 4G LTE networks," said David J. Smith, Executive Vice President, Mobile Computing at Research In Motion. "The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook offers a broad range of premium features, including a stunning 7 inch display, front and rear facing HD video cameras, HDMI out and stereo speakers, and it also offers premium performance on high speed cellular networks, helping customers to be more productive than ever and to make the most of their time on the go."

Featuring the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2 software, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet gives customers access to high speed mobile networks around the world (LTE and HSPA+)(1) and offers an exceptional, high-fidelity, fast web experience that supports more HTML5 functionality than any other native tablet browser on the market(2). The powerful unified inbox allows users to easily manage multiple personal and work email accounts, as well as messages from Twitter®, Facebook® and LinkedIn, all in one place. The built-in Calendar and Contacts apps offer features to help customers better manage schedules and prepare for more effective meetings. Plus, the apps' unique integration with social networks can provide customers with a wealth of information about their contacts at their fingertips.

The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is also enterprise ready. It can be easily managed with BlackBerry Mobile Fusion and includes BlackBerry® Balance technology, which allows a user to use a BlackBerry PlayBook for both work and personal purposes by keeping business information highly secure and separate from personal information.

Out of the box, the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet comes preloaded with the tools customers need to be productive as well as to have fun, whether in the office, at home or on the road. Thousands of apps for work and play are also available on the BlackBerry App World storefront, such as the recently launched BlackBerry Video Store for all PlayBook customers in Canada, bringing additional functionality and value to customers. The BlackBerry Video Store offers a catalog of thousands of movies and TV shows. Customers can begin watching media as soon as they start to download a file, so they won't have to wait for the entire file to transfer before they can begin enjoying great entertainment on the tablet's high resolution display or on an HDTV using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's HDMI output. Canadians can download the free Video Store app on BlackBerry App World.

The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will come with 32GB of memory storage and will be available from Bell, Rogers and TELUS in Canada on August 9, 2012. Additional variants of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet supporting various high speed cellular networks are expected to be available in the coming months from carriers in the US, Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Stereo Shower Speaker

Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

After iDevices finally announced that their iShower shower Bluetooth speaker was now available I immediately headed to Amazon to see if any new competition has popped up. Turns out that there is a pretty solid shower Bluetooth speaker available now from Amazon from Hipe. The Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Stereo Shower Speaker is only $69.99 compared to the iShowers $99.99 which is a nice touch. Also worth noting is that the Hipe has a built in rechargeable battery that has a runtime of 25 hours though according to the reviews on Amazon it could use a bit more power management. It is worth noting that while the description says it is waterproof that still does not mean you can dunk it underwater. :)

If you are in the market for a shower radio with Bluetooth check out the Hipe Waterproof Bluetooth Stereo Shower Speaker. Let us know if you pick one up!

WebWorks Push Capture App BlackBerry 10

RIM just added push service support in their latest SDK updates and its a big move for BlackBerry 10. Push is one of the key features of current BlackBerry devices and RIM is doing something similar with BlackBerry 10 though reworking some of the specifics to modernize it. RIM already offered a sample app for push in the new WebWorks SDK called Push Capture but Matthew D'Andrea followed up with a nice tutorial on how to get it running.

Check out how to setup a BlackBerry 10 WebWorks Push app here
