How Will RIM Differentiate the 6 BlackBerry 10 Models?

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 02:29 PM PDT

who what where when why

One of the recent details that RIM released was that the first two BlackBerry 10 devices are part of a planned lineup of 6 upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices. We already know that the first will be a full touchscreen device and the second will be a QWERTY model but we don't know much about the remaining 4. I have been discussing with a few friends that I really hope RIM has a slider model in the mix but signs are not pointing in that direction.

This has me wondering how RIM will be differentiating the six BlackBerry 10 models in the planned lineup. They have already confirmed that they will all have standard screen resolutions so that takes away one of RIM's common differentiators. They also will all probably be packing things like NFC, GPS, Accelerometer, etc. The only real things I see left to differentiate on are storage capacity, size, and processor speed.

I don't think that storage capacity is enough of a differentiator to warrant different models but that’s a question mark. CPU's have to be dual core but possibly they can be slightly faster or slower though there would have to be a minimum baseline for compatibility. The only real solid differentiator I can think of is size with possibly a lineup of lower cost Curve models that eschew higher end aesthetics like stainless steel banding. On the other hand we have already heard from reporters that got a first hand look at the BlackBerry 10 models that the touch model looks like the Dev Alpha or even the iPhone 5 rumored mockups. Also the QWERTY model is supposed to look like the Bold without the silver metal RIM on the 9900.

So lets throw the question out to all of you. How do you think RIM plans on differentiating the BlackBerry 10 lineup?

RIM Explains How Recent Contact Manager Works

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 12:46 PM PDT

Recent Contacts Manager

One of my favorite little improvements that RIM added in the past year or so especially in BlackBerry 7 builds is the ability to have it remember recently used contacts. This meant that the BlackBerry email client would suggest addresses you may have emailed previously even though they are not in your address book. The feature actually worked nicely but RIM never really explained what criteria was used to place an address in your recent contacts list.

Jason pointed out to me that RIM has posted a knowledge base article detailing exactly how an address gets on the recent contacts manager list and how it gets removed. Here is how it breaks down:

In order for a recent contact to expire from the list it will need to match the following criteria:

  1. If the last time the contact was used (sent or received a message with this contact) exceeds 30 days.
  2. The average use (number of times per day) of a contact has dropped below 1.

Recent Contact Manager will only allow for the device to maintain a maximum of 250 contacts.

Single contacts in the Recent Contact Manager can be deleted by highlighting the name and hitting the delete key or clicking the menu button and choosing "Delete".

You can also clear the entire list by clicking the menu button and choosing "Clear List".

Nothing groundbreaking but good to know. If you don't already have recent contact manager enabled on your BlackBerry you can check if it is available by firing up Messages –> Menu –> Option –> Message Display and Actions and then selecting the option you see in the image above.

Skylab Compass Pro for BlackBerry Smartphones & PlayBooks

I was looking for a compass app for my PlayBook and happened to get an email from Skylabs about their updated Compass Pro app. Their Compass Pro app is available both for the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones but the native compass on my Bold 9900 does fine. On the other hand Skylabs Compass Pro looks absolutely beautiful on my PlayBoook. Their new update adds 6 different compass skins from pirate antique to modern white and silver for the PlayBook. It also offers up full 3D viewing for the compass which is really slick.

Check out Compass Pro in App World for BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook for $0.99

Wificheema

Umaircheema let us know about the release of their free Wi-Fi remote desktop app for BlackBerry smartphones that uses their own clients and servers. This is not based on Microsoft's remote desktop but rather requires you to install the WiFiCheema server on your Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop. You can then download their clients for your BlackBerry smartphone or Android device to remotely control the computer over Wi-Fi.

You can check out the free WiFiCheema app in App World or learn more on their website. The server downloads are also available on the WiFiCheema website. I have not had a chance to try it yet but let us know how it works for you!
