Free Balloon Gunner 3D Game for BlackBerry 7 Bold & Torch Devices

Posted: 05 Jun 2012 02:13 AM PDT

 Balloon Gunner Balloon Gunner2

I have been playing Balloon Gunner 3D on my PlayBook and loving it. Zach at CrackBerry noticed that LanguageBug has brought the awesome game to BlackBerry smartphones and it is free. The game is only available for BlackBerry 7 devices (Bold & Torch models) which probably requires the OpenGL and faster 1Ghz+ processors. Just like the PlayBook game this also offers a Stereoscopic (red+cyan glasses) 3D experience if you set the 3D option though you can play it either way.

If you have a BlackBerry 7 Bold or Torch I HIGHLY recommend checking out Balloon Gunner 3D in App World. Check out the video demo below to get an idea of the game:

TalkBox Releases BlackBerry Beta For Their Voice Messenger App

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:42 AM PDT

Talkbox

TalkBox launched a new BlackBerry Smartphone client in beta last week and it seems to be working nicely. The apps allows you to send voice messages back and forth in an instant messaging fashion. In other words think of it as a walkie talkie service that works cross platform from iOS, Android, Windows Phone and now BlackBerry.

Check out the beta at this link as long as you have OS 5.0+ and an SD card. Thanks Terrence for pointing it out!

Alec Saunders Talks About BlackBerry 10 in Indonesia

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 07:39 AM PDT

BBW12_JamSuperSession_1

Alec Saunders has been doing a solid job since he took over as RIM's head of developer relations. He has become the developer advocate at RIM and has been laser focused on drawing more developers to BlackBerry 10. He recently sat down with the Jakarta Globe at a MobileMonday event in South Jakarta about BlackBerry 10 and the phones coming out later this year. Alec is tasked with the difficulty of getting developers to develop for a platform before it reaches the consumers even though they already have a taste for it with the PlayBook.

I found the interview very interesting especially when you see the questions and perspective coming from a country where RIM is still thriving. Here are some choice answers below but I highly recommend catching the whole interview at the Jakarta Globe.

How would you describe BlackBerry 10?

We're trying to take things that people love about BlackBerry and modernize that experience. BlackBerry 10 devices are about sharing and [being] social. The keyboard learns how you type and adapts to the way you work. The device can be used with one hand. You're sitting at a meeting, your phone buzzes and you can check it casu ally.

With so many sophisticated operating systems out there, will you be a little late with BlackBerry 10?

If you rush an operating system to market, it's a bad idea. … I don't think too much of the Android and the iOS devices at this point. I think iOS is designed for five years ago. … It was designed with the idea that Steve Jobs had, that it would be a media consumption device. And that's not what a BlackBerry is. It's not for sitting on the train and watching TV.

And Android, there are now 3,977 different Android devices out there in the marketplace. For developers, it's a nightmare. It's impossible to test them all. So developers now are getting to the phase of, 'Hey, maybe there are some things better than Android.'

Another thing about Android is — and Google even admitted it — it's a rip-off of an Apple experience. So Apple is a five-year-old experience, Android is a clone of that five-year-old experience. We're a new way of thinking about what a smartphone is. We're going to take the smartphone back to a communication device, not something you sit around and watch movies with.

Kudos to Spence for pointing this one out via N4BB

Another Patent Troll Hits RIM With Lawsuit

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 06:58 AM PDT

Innovative Pager

I am not sure what it is recently but it seems like the whole tech industry has been subjected to parasitic patent trolls. The latest in line is Mobile Telecommunications Technologies who has sued RIM using their acquired portfolio of former SkyTel Communications patents including five patents. Here is how TheStar describes the patents in question registered between 1996-1999:

The patents cover several software functions including those that store and resend undelivered data messages, that handle call back numbers, and which allow a server to process extra-large emails. MTEL also says the BlackBerry calendar infringes a patent that covers prewritten messages.

I really want to see that patent for allowing servers to process extra large emails from pre 1999. Its almost like being sued for patent infringement is proof that you are doing things the right way. Anyone want to take bets on how this one plays out? I wonder where SkyTel and Mobile Telecommun ications have been sleeping for the last 12+ years.

Thanks JD for sending this one in!

RIM Prepping Its Infrastructure For LTE Devices

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 05:45 AM PDT

We know that RIM is working on LTE version of the PlayBook and future BlackBerry 10 smartphones that are scheduled for later this year so this is really no surprise. Lately we have been hearing from multiple sources that RIM has been piling on the software and hardware upgrades to its network to improve both performance and efficiency. The latest bit of news we are hearing is that some of the latest upgrades they are performing is to provide support for future Long Term (LTE) products. Hopefully this means RIM is going to be launching BB10 devices with LTE soon.  RIM has always been behind on faster data support, some of their reasoning is because of lower battery performance,  but from what we can see these days users don't really care because they are buying battery eating devices as soon as they hit the market, android devices and the iPhone's are some examples. I happen to see people charging their iPhones at restaurants all the time, mostly women since it is easy for them to carry a charger in their purse Smile.

RIM was late to the 3G market, they were also sort of late to the so called 4G market as well now LTE there are only a few devices out there so it be nice to see them catch up and perhaps offer a more efficient LTE device than the competition.
