RIM Gets Reeled Into Another Patent Lawsuit Over Music Playlists

Posted: 08 May 2012 01:54 AM PDT

RIM Playlist patent

I would have never thought of RIM first when it came to patent lawsuits over music playlists. GigaOm got word that a shell company, Point Ventures of Seattle (aka the patent troll), has chosen to sue RIM of all people. This lawsuit is over Point Ventures wildly innovative "System and method for musical playlist selection in a portable audio device"

You can read the whole patent here (US Patent 7667123) but essentially Point Ventures thinks it has a validly awarded patent on creating an audio playlist on any device with song titles created on the device or built out of a search and editing them. Sound like every music player? You got it!

Anyone want to take a gentleman’s bet on how this one plays out?

Alien Attack Alien Attack2

ToySoft is once again pushing the limits on BlackBerry smartphones with their latest Alien Attack game. It is an augmented reality game for some BlackBerry 7 smartphones (9900, 9810, 9850, etc…). It overlays alien attackers over the images from your camera with you and you need to move around the blast them into oblivion.

PhotoClub

MMMOOO has added a new trick to their popular PhotoClub app we mentioned previously. The new v2.4 adds the ability to create photo collages in the photo editor. They even have a cool promotion now offering PhotoClub for free but I am not sure how long that will last before the price jumps back up.

Check out PhotoClub (currently free) in App World

QNX Porsche 911 Sporting Citrix Receiver and SAP Dashboard Video

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:44 AM PDT

BBW12_GeneralSession_10

Mark pointed out to me a fun little quirk in this video of the Porsche 911 with QNX powered BlackBerry technology from BlackBerry World. RIM filmed this video with Morgan Parker of RIM Product Marketing and Jon Wong, Sr. Product Manager showing off Citrix Receiver and SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards on the built in PlayBook mount in the Porsche. The best part is when they pull out a Porsche P'9981 to use as a remote control for Citrix Receiver in the Porsche after pairing it using NFC. Is this the future?

Or at the very least a future in which I could possibly afford a Porsche?

RIM also has a good walkthrough of their booth at the show where they are showing off how BlackBerry integrates into the home with different concepts:

NodeBeat Lets Anyone Create Music Visually on Their PlayBooks

Posted: 07 May 2012 07:49 AM PDT

Nodebeat NodeBeat2

RIM's Senior Director of Open Source, @Pelegri, pointed out that NodeBeat has been ported to the PlayBook. The developer ported the open source crossplatform OpenFrameworks toolkit to the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 to make this happen. This allowed the dev to bring his intuitive and fun visual music app for all ages to the PlayBook. It makes your music sound good and is built on some simple yet hard to explain principles. Here is how the developer explains the generation process:

Generators and Notes make up the two types of nodes. Generators pulse and play Notes within proximity. A Note is played in sequence, based on the distance it is from its connected Generator. Pause nodes to create your own beats or let them roam free to have them generate their own.

Check out NodeBeat for $0.99 in App World or more info at http://nodebeat.com

We told you back then that the countdown was set to end right after BlackBerry World and now the Wake Up, Be Bold website is live.
