Posted: 09 May 2012 01:51 AM PDT

Angry Birds Seasons

Quite a few readers sent in tips about this yesterday but we were trying to piece together a change log since Rovio failed to do that. Thomas and Rick confirmed for us (along with Zach from CrackBerry) that this update to v2.3 brings us some new levels. That means Angry Birds Seasons owners now have more levels to suck up every free moment they have.

Check out the latest Angry Birds Seasons update for $4.99 in App World

RIM Makes BlackBerry Curve 9320 Official With BBM Button

Posted: 08 May 2012 03:03 PM PDT

curve-9320-2

RIM practically announced this device a few times but now they have made it official. They have officially announced the low cost BlackBerry Curve 9320 on their website (no press release yet) and it confirms much of what we have already heard. The device is packing OS 7.1 along with an FM Radio, BBM dedicated button, and some slick styles:

curve-9320-1

Check out the announcement below:

Hey #TeamBlackBerry, we've got someone we want you to meet –- the newest member of the BlackBerry® Curve™ family of smartphones! We're very proud to present the BlackBerry® Curve™ 9320, a stylish new smartphone for the socially-connected. I've got my hands on one of these smartphones right now, and I wanted to give you the heads up on three things you should know about this new BlackBerry Curve smartphone:

Style meets practicality

The first thing I noticed was just how well the BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone fit in my hand, and how good it looks at the same time. If you're someone who's really into messaging and social networking this BlackBerry smartphone is a wise choice. You get the best in class QWERTY keyboard for easy typing, a dedicated button for BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) — !!! — and it's available in multiple colors so you can express your personal style. (Note: Please check with your carrier for color availability.)

Next Generation BlackBerry 7.1 OS

After you turn the BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone on and start it up, you'll notice that it's runningBlackBerry® 7.1 OS. It gives you a smooth and fast BlackBerry smartphone experience, which I noticed most while I was browsing the web. The new OS adds features like Mobile Hotspot (Wi-Fi® sharing), which allows you to connect up to five additional devices*. It also has FM radio so you can tune into your favorite local radio stations.

Peace of mind at your fingertips with Parental Controls

For you parents out there considering the purchase of a smartphone to stay in touch, rest assured that your child or teen can safely use their BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone to have fun while giving you peace of minds thanks to new parental controls. With Parental Controls, you have the ability to limit or restrict certain phone numbers, websites, and various social networking apps.

Well, there you have it: three things you should know about the BlackBerry Curve 9320. It's designed to make messaging and accessing social networks incredibly easy, it's running the latest BlackBerry OS, and it features handy parental controls for peace of mind. I think this may just be one of the best BlackBerry Curvesmartphones for someone who is considering their first smartphone.

Pricing and availability of the BlackBerry Curve 9320 will be announced in conjunction with RIM's distribution partners. For more information please check here.

Let us know what you think of it in the comments below!

* Mobile hotspot feature may require an additional data plan. Please check with your service provider.

First BlackBerry 10 Jam Conference a Success?

Posted: 08 May 2012 02:45 PM PDT

IMG_6523c

I was speaking to Kevin yesterday at an event and we were discussing one of the main vibes at BlackBerry World and BlackBerry Jam. I simply called it BlackBerry DevCon 2012 part one and Kevin called it the twilight zone. For the first time in as far as I can remember BlackBerry developers at BlackBerry Jam were excited about the development tools, functionality, and in general they were very happy. Alec Saunders from RIM summed it up really well in his "BlackBerry 10 Jam, Rocked because of You" post stating that:

This was a moment we'd been working toward since before DevCon Americas in the fall. I know there was a lot of pressure to show a phone last fall, but until the SDK's were ready, and developers could actually use them, there would have been little point. Instead we steadily built first the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ OS 1.0 SDK, the PlayBook OS 2.0 SDK, and the PlayBook OS 2.0 software release, knowing full well that these releases, accompanied by the over 20,000 BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablets we had seeded into the market, would be a good foundation for the next phase – the actual BlackBerry 10 devices.

I have to say I am excited to see how this all plays out. Apps will not be the reason why customers buy BlackBerrys but it will build the ecosystem. Now we just need RIM to hit the messaging and PIM functionality out of the park with BlackBerry 10.

Viber Releases Viber Messaging App for BlackBerry With Voice Coming After

Posted: 08 May 2012 07:11 AM PDT

Viber2 Viber

Viber is hugely popular internationally and they have been working on a BlackBerry client for awhile now. They just let us know this morning that they have released the first public beta of their BlackBerry client. Keep in mind that this beta initially only offers Viber Messaging which allows you to send text and picture messages. Here is how they describe it:

Both Viber for BlackBerry Beta and Viber for Windows Phone 7 Beta initially offer Viber Messaging, allowing users to exchange text and high-quality photo messages and share locations with other Viber users. Viber seamlessly integrates with the devices' interface, instantly identifying existing contacts who already have Viber installed so users do not need to go through a "friend request" process. The full release for both platforms, including Viber's signature HD-quality free voice calling, will be released as soon as it meets Viber's quality standards.

In other words we have to wait for voice calling. I am just hoping they are ready at launch for BlackBerry 10 support! Viber for BlackBerry Beta runs on BlackBerrys with OS 5.0+ and you can get it in App World or directly or get redirected from Viber at www.viber.com/blackberry.

RIM Announces Partnership With TomTom for Traffic & Maps

Posted: 08 May 2012 06:59 AM PDT

RIM TomTom

RIM and TomTom made an announcement at CTIA today that they have signed a deal for mapping and traffic data. BlackBerrys will be using TomTom's real time Traffic HD services in BlackBerry apps including BlackBerry Maps, BlackBerry Traffic, and the BlackBerry Locate Service for developers. My guess is that this will extend further into a mapping deal for BlackBerry 10 devices but they are staying mum on that for now. What I would really love to see is an offline mapping app on BlackBerry 10…

Check out the announcement below:

RIM selects TomTom HD Traffic

~HD Traffic provides real-time traffic information for BlackBerry apps~

CTIA WIRELESS 2012

NEW ORLEANS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TomTom today announced that Research In Motion (RIM) is using TomTom's award winning real-time traffic services for BlackBerry® applications. BlackBerry® Traffic is now powered by TomTom HD Traffic, giving customers access to the most accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date traffic information on the market. Additionally, TomTom maps and location content is used in BlackBerry® Maps, and for BlackBerry® Locate Services, which gives 3rd party software developers access to the mapping and traffic information for their own apps.

"TomTom's market-leading real-time traffic information will provide BlackBerry customers with the best mobile travel experience."

"Through our strategic relationship with RIM, we are enabling the future of mobile travel with powerful location content and real-time information, including HD Traffic," said Nuno Campos, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for TomTom Licensing. "TomTom's market-leading real-time traffic information will provide BlackBerry customers with the best mobile travel experience."

"We're thrilled to work with TomTom to leverage their industry-leading traffic and travel content for BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Maps, and to enable access to those capabilities for BlackBerry developers as well," said Martyn Mallick, Vice President, Global Alliances and Business Development at Research In Motion.

According to a recent study, TomTom's traffic information saves commuters 50 minutes of travel time per week or approximately 40 hours per year. With HD Traffic, BlackBerry customers will be able to select the best route to their destinations in an effort to not only save time but also fuel.

Thorsten Heins hinted that this was happening any day now at BlackBerry World and the time seems to have come. RIM has appointed a new Chief Operating Officer and Chief Marketing Officer. They are bringing wireless industry veterans Kristian Tear as Chief Operating Officer and Frank Boulben as Chief Marketing Officer. We will be doing a bit of background ourselves shortly but RIM has provided quite a bit of it themselves:

"Kristian and Frank bring extensive knowledge of the rapidly changing wireless global market and will help RIM as we sharpen our focus on delivering long-term value to our stakeholders," said Thorsten Heins, RIM’s President and Chief Executive Officer. "Most importantly, both Kristian and Frank possess a keen understanding of the emerging trends in mobile communications and computing."

I also look forward to helping RIM attract a brand new generation of BlackBerry users."

Mr. Boulben is the former Executive Vice President of Strategy, Marketing and Sales for LightSquared. He joined LightSquared after serving as Global Director of Commercial Strategy for Vodafone Group and Executive Vice President of Brand and Consumer Marketing for Orange Group. Mr. Boulben will oversee global marketing efforts at RIM.

"RIM is a pioneer in the mobile world and the BlackBerry brand is a global icon," said Mr. Boulben. "We all know how fast the mobile arena evolves and with the BlackBerry 10 platform, I believe RIM will once again change the way individuals and enterprises engage with each other and the world around them. I could not resist the opportunity to be part of that transformation."

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins Clarifies His Stance on Licensing BlackBerry 10

Posted: 08 May 2012 05:45 AM PDT

QNX Auto

I have been asked about RIM licensing BlackBerry 10 many times since Thorsten Heins took the reigns at RIM. At BlackBerry World Heins clarified his stance on licensing the BlackBerry OS which some in the financial industry have been pushing RIM to do. Heins response to one of the reporters asking "What RIM's stance was on licensing BlackBerry 10" was right on the money stating that:

RIM wants to provide the best mobile computing platform. RIM is investigating many options around the segmentation of BlackBerrys to see how would they position BlackBerry 10 in the high, medium, and low end market. There are many discussions about it but we have not made a decision. It is all about where the right entry point is for licensing if they do it. First RIM needs to prove BlackBerry 10 then they will continue discussions.

Heins went on to state that RIM's main discussions with licensing were mostly in terms of licensing to verticals. This is exactly what QNX does currently with cars, routers, and more in different industry verticals. I think RIM is on to something with that since they could bring the front end experience of BlackBerry 10 and Cascades to many other industry solutions.

RIM realizes that for other vendors to want to license BlackBerry 10 for phones they have to first prove the platform on their own. RIM is having the discussions that will continue after the launch of BlackBerry 10 but even then Heins was saying RIM needs to find out where it would fit in their portfolio. For example, would they license the OS for vendors to make lower cost smartphones for the emerging markets or headlining ones.
