MyCityWay Urban Reference Guide for the PlayBook (Limited US Cities)

Posted: 22 May 2012 12:55 PM PDT

MyCityWay MyCityWay2

MyCityWay announced at BlackBerry World that they launched their urban reference guide for the PlayBook with plans to bring it to BlackBerry 10 devices. The app currently is only available in select US cities namely: New York, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, and Chicago. We held off mentioning it because it seemed like more cities (68 of them) would be launched shortly but learned recently that it is still a ways off.

MyCityWay helps you find local news, transit updates, gas prices, hot sales, restaurant deals, movie tickets or even the closest free Wi-Fi spot. The MyCityWay Snapshot scouts the city scene and tells you where to be. Check out the MyCityWay app on your PlayBook free in App World. The app has a really slick interface that is impressive but it can be a bit laggy. Still it has some decent info about NYC.

Full press release below:

MYCITYWAY PARTNERS WITH RIM TO DEVELOP NEW APP FOR PLAYBOOK AND BLACKBERRY 10 PLATFORMS

Real-time urban reference app from MyCityWay for the PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry 10 users features a customizable live Snapshot and an intuitive color psychology-based user interface

NEW YORK CITY (May 1, 2012) – For the first time, the all-new MyCityWay offers its personalized, real-time, all-access Snapshot on BlackBerry® PlayBook™ and BlackBerry 10 later this year.  The newMyCityWay is highly optimized for the BlackBerry PlayBook platform and transforms your tablet into a comprehensive, yet intuitive urban reference guide. Whether you are looking for local news, transit updates, cheapest gas prices, the hottest sales, restaurant deals, movie tickets or just the closest free Wi-Fi spot to get some work done, the Snapshot immediately scouts the scene and finds it for you.
The BlackBerry platform's reputation as the de facto choice for business users combined with the way MyCityWay's apps serve business travelers, city residents and tourists made this partnership a perfect match.

"Whether you are a business person on a plane planning your itinerary or a busy mom looking after the kids, MyCityWay will transform the PlayBook into the all-inclusive metro utility for your needs," said Puneet Mehta, co-founder of MyCityWay. "We are highly impressed with how easily the BlackBerry developer tool kit allowed us to customize MyCityWay for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to offer users a truly enriched in-app experience."

This spring, MyCityWay will be available on PlayBook for five cities including New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and Austin, and will expand to over 20 cities by fall 2012.  This first of its kind mobile urban reference app offers a personalized, real-time, all-access Snapshot that instantly connects you to local news, transit updates, hottest sales and all the up-to-the-minute usable information you crave. MyCityWay is also the first city guide app to display information in a visually intuitive menu. You'll know when to hit-up a venue, where a deal is being offered and receive practical transit advice, like "you're fine to walk to the restaurant from here" or "better take a cab." Available now for New York City residents and travelers, MyCityWay will expand to include cities across the entire U.S. by the end of May, with international cities to follow.

"The MyCityWay app provides PlayBook users with incredibly useful info to make the most of their time in a city and it is a must-have app for both locals and visitors," says Martyn Mallick, VP, Global Alliances & Business Development at RIM, "We are also very excited to be working with MyCityWay to bring their app to the BlackBerry 10 platform later this year."

Free Offline Pocket Dictionary for BlackBerry Smartphones

Posted: 22 May 2012 10:45 AM PDT

Pocket Dictionary Pocket Dictionary2 Pocket Dictionary3

I have been simply using Google for years as a dictionary on my BlackBerry but Jason introduced me to Pocket Dictionary from SRID Games. This is in no way a comprehensive Oxford quality dictionary but it does work well and best of all it works offline. You only need an internet connection if you want to play the pronunciation of a word. It offers up over 1 million words and gives you the ability to set your own user defined list of words to come back to.

Stellarium Brings a 3D Planetarium To Your BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted: 22 May 2012 07:55 AM PDT

Stellarium Stellarium4

Stellarium is an amazing 3D planetarium software that was just ported to the PlayBook. The app is based on the open source Stellarium Linux/Windows project and does a great job of making it all touch friendly. I am not sure if the developer is associated with the Stellarium project but either way I have to say I am impressed with how this app packs the whole view of the sky into your PlayBook.

Features include:

  • GPS and magnetometer(compass) support for automatic location detection and point-and-view functionality
  • Asterisms and illustrations of the constellations
  • Realistic Milky Way and images of nebulae including full Messier catalogue
  • Azimuthal and equatorial grids
  • Celestial object search, powerful zoom
  • Configurable location, landscape, projections,…

If you are an astronomy buff of simply want to learn more check out Stellarium for $1.99 in App World

Store, Search or Share Your Text Messages with Free Uppidy Service

 Uppidy

I was reading the WSJ this weekend and ran across an article about Uppidy and its BlackBerry. They have created a free service that backs up your text messages from your phone and view them on their website. This lets you sort them and manage your messages and even share them with others. Right now the app only backs up your SMS since you have installed the app so older SMS are not backed up. After you install the app it will sync your messages at a interval you specify.

Check out Uppidy free in App World or at www.Uppidy.com. Check out a video intro below:

Free Noiz2 Game Ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook (Android)

Another fun Android port made its way to the PlayBook this week. This time we have Noiz2 originally created by Kenta Cho and then ported to Android and now the PlayBook using the Android Player. The menu screen is a bit buggy requiring a few screen presses to get the game to start but after that the gameplay is super smooth and addictive.
