Verizon Joins in – Makes Calls to Japan Free Until April 10th

verizon-wireless-logo

It is nice to see carriers helping out customers with family, friends, and loved ones devastated by the earthquake in Japan. Verizon has joined AT&T in offering free calls to Japan from March 11th until April 10th which is later than AT&T. Most wireless and residential customers can make free calls to Japan as long as they are post paid customers. The calls will simply be rated at $0.00 per minute and customers with the Verizon World Plan can call without it using their minutes. They will also be waiving charges for phone card users making long distance calls to Japan.

Media Sync Screencap Shows a BlackBerry PlayBook PIN

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 09:05 PM PDT

Desktop Manager BlakcBerry PlayBook PIN

It has been a point of contention for some to know if the BlackBerry PlayBook will have its own PIN number. We have seen that the developer API's have a way to ask for a PIN number but the lack of native email/BBM/PIM on the PlayBook lead some to believe it may not have a PIN. Others think that 3G and 4G versions will have a PIN but not the original Wi-Fi version.

While this will be easily proven for the Wi-Fi version when it comes out I noticed that the latest video by IntoMobile showing off the BlackBerry PlayBook Media Sync in Desktop Manager has a PIN. I tried sending a message to the PIN in the video (pin:FFFF06AC) from my BlackBerry but it did not get delivered or at least a delivery confirmation.

With that stirring the pot what do you think? Will the BlackBerry PlayBook have a PIN number?

BlackBerry PlayBook Media Sync Caught On Video

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:21 PM PDT

PlayBook Media Sync

We know from RIM already that there will be some Desktop Manager integration for the BlackBerry PlayBook and part of it will be Media Sync. Marin @IntoMobile managed to snag some video footage of the BlackBerry PlayBook synching media with Desktop Manager. The version of Desktop Manager looks very similar to the current Desktop Manager and the process also looks similar.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

Some things to note:

  • You can use the PlayBook while synching
  • No word on wireless sync which is what I am waiting for
  • Sync will be for Music, Pictures, and Video
  • The PlayBook automatically checks for duplicates which is nice for music
  • The PlayBook calculates available space in real time

Kudos to LaoWang for the tip!

Sprint Offering $125 Rebate for Individuals Porting to their Smartphones

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 02:50 PM PDT

Sprint Change Credit

It has been awhile since carriers were offering incentives for customers to defect from another carrier. Sprint has been bleeding customers and their latest initiative is offering customers with single lines a $125 service credit if they port their number to Sprint and get a smartphone. As long as you port your number to Sprint by April 16th you can get a $125 credit applied to your bill after 60 days if you get a smartphone. If you get a dumb phone it is only $50.

There are a few caveats but you can read all the details on Sprint's website. via Engadget

Verizon Calls Out AT&T on 4G Claims Through Twitter

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 11:59 AM PDT

Boxing Executives

I was really enjoying the Verizon/AT&T wars last year where they bashed each other on coverage. It seems like 4G claims may start that up again! I noticed that VerizonWireless pointed out an article by PC Magazines Sascha Segan titled "How AT&T Totally Flubbed 4G." Verizon's Twitter account chose this quote "AT&T is lying about 4G Shamelessly" from their Twitter account.

Verizon calls out ATT 4G

The PC Magazine article is an interesting take on the subject since nobody truly has a 4G network in the US. Still that has not stopped every carrier from calling a service on their network 4G. According to the standard there really is no 4G network though LTE and even WiMax are at least a new generation of technology.

What do you think? Is it time for carriers to prove their 4G network is actually worthy of the title or will it just be marketing speak?

InstaRead App Brings InstaPaper Items to Your BlackBerry

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 10:55 AM PDT

InstaRead

I have been using Jason Emricks free (GitHub) Send to InstaPaper app on my BlackBerry for awhile to bookmark pages I need to visit from my desktop. We have been lacking a client to read InstaPaper items on your BlackBerry until InstaRead came out. InstaRead is sadly not free but is available for $1.99 on sale from $3.99 in the store.

InstaRead simply lets you view your bookmarked articles from your BlackBerry that you have stored in InstaPaper. It will save and sync the read process so your workflow is not lost. The only complaint I really have is the interface looks like BlackBerry apps from 4 years ago.

Let us know if you spot any more elegant solutions. Alternatively you could simply use EverNote. via BBGeeks

BES 5.0.3 Documentation Released – BlackBerry Balance Controls Detailed

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 09:09 AM PDT

New in BES 5.0.3

A buddy let us know that RIM has published up the documentation (or at least most of it) for BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) 5.0.3. The release has been delayed a few weeks but it should be out very soon. I was scouring the documentation looking for any mention of the BlackBerry PlayBook but could not find any. (Let me know if you do) On the other hand I did find some more details on the BlackBerry Balance features that RIM is trying to roll out.

They have combined them into a new Employee Liable IT Policy that lets BES admins restrict certain things on these devices. For example, there is a new Individual-Liable Devices Policy by default. Here is how RIM describes it:

Similar to the Default IT policy, this policy prevents BlackBerry device users from accessing organizer data from within the social networking applications on their BlackBerry devices.

This policy permits users to access their personal calendar services and email messaging services (for example, their BlackBerry® Internet Service accounts), update the BlackBerry® Device Software using methods that exist outside your organization, make calls when BlackBerry devices are locked, and cut, copy, and paste text. Users cannot forward email messages from one email messaging service to another.

You can use the Individual-Liable Devices IT policy if your organization includes users who purchase their own BlackBerry devices and connect the BlackBerry devices to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance in your organization’s environment.

This new policy includes rules such as Disable Forwarding Between Services and Disable Organizer Data Access for Social Networking Applications. When you wipe a employee liable device remotely it will wipe the information contained in the chart at this link.

You can check out the release notes for BES 5.0.3 at this link or simply all of the available documentation here.

Rumor: BlackBerry PlayBook Launching on “Major Retailer” on March 27th

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 08:49 AM PDT

PlayBook Major Retailer

It is sad that RIM still has us guessing on the launch date for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Earlier this morning Babisboi pointed out in the forums that PreCentral (Via AndroidCentral) got a hold of a document from a "Major Retailer" which shows the BlackBerry PlayBook coming on March 27th. It has the pricing set at $499, $599, and $699 for the different sizes which jives right.

Keep in mind this is about as sketchy as a rumor gets but PreCentral is pretty reliable though the tipster was anonymous. So what do you think of the March 27th launch date rumor? How about the $499 price point?

PS: Aren't rumors fun?

Press Release: Momentem Rewards Their Top User of Their Expense Management Software

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 07:55 AM PDT

Ronen mentioned a few expense apps this past few days and one application we have mentioned in the past is a mobile expense management application. The application allows you to tag calls, emails, expenses and your activities in real-time. They let us know that they have announced their top user of their service for 2010 and also awarding him with a free one year service .

To find out more about this service use this link.

Press release below:

momentem app announces Top Tagger for 2010

Business professional uses the momentem™ BlackBerry app for 32 hours per week

John Wu, an IT Consultant based on the East Coast of the USA, is Momentem's Top Tagger for 2010. He has won this title as a result of him tagging 32 hours a week of his time using the service throughout 2010. As the Top Momentem Tagger, John will receive his 2011 momentem subscription for free.

Like so many busy professionals, John depends on his BlackBerry.  Every month he makes and receives hundreds of calls, reads and sends thousands of emails, and logs all of his meetings, keeping track of it all with Momentem. Always running in the background, Momentem pops-up after each event on his phone inviting him to assign it to a specific client or project and to add any additional notes. When John needs to collect all of the information he has logged via the app he uses the Momentem hosted service to generate Excel spreadsheets, neatly sorted by client and project, which he can use to generate his invoices and timesheets.

Consistently logging 32 hours per week throughout 2010, it is clear to see that Momentem, and John's BlackBerry, are used for the vast majority of his working week.  John is one of a growing number of smartphone users worldwide who depend on Momentem to accurately capture their calls and time, enabling them to bill more time and recover more costs.

Momentem, powered by parent company Wmode, has received several awards and appears on many "Top 10 apps" lists including IT Pro, MSN Tech and Gadgets, and Fierce Wireless.  As well Momentem was a regional finalist in the 2010 BlackBerry Super App contest.

A user since Momentem was launched in 2008, John tried several other name brand solutions with little success because they were either too complex, did not integrate well enough with BlackBerry, or required too much set-up.  With Momentem John was up and running within minutes and hasn't looked back since. In 2010, John upgraded to the Super App version of Momentem, which enables him to tag more events in more ways, allowing him to do more with his tags such as adding them to his calendar or tasks list.

Providing users with even more flexibility and convenient access to their tagged data, Momentem will be releasing a web portal in March 2011. This will complement the on-handset Excel reports to give users, like John, a real-time synopsis of his tagged activities – viewable as pie charts, lists, and spreadsheets.  Within seconds John will be able to analyze his time and costs spent on any contact or project.

"I rely on my BlackBerry for my business and I like how Momentem is always there in the background instantly prompting me to log my calls and activities, and as all those valuable records are securely stored in the Momentem service, there's no need for me to sync or back up my phone to get at the data." said John Wu. "The strength of Momentem is that you can track and tag work on your phone at anytime, anywhere. I haven't seen anyone else who has been able to do what Momentem does and I was looking for years. Of all the companies you'd expect to be able to do this type of function, all fall short, they weren't even close.  The Momentem team also provide great support and they really understand the needs of consulting businesses like mine."

Talking about the Momentem service, Terry Hughes, Head of Market Development at Wmode, said "Congratulations to our Tagger of the Year 2010.  John has illustrated what I have been saying for so long; that busy people will embrace and pay monthly for apps like ours as long as we deliver something that's easy to use, and which delivers an outstanding return on investment.  We are getting huge demand from Android users for our service, and for integration with QuickBooks and FreshBooks, so watch this space as we continue to deliver a compelling proposition to business users of smartphones worldwide."

To download and try Momentem for your BlackBerry go to www.momentem.net.

A LinkedIn group has been set up for Momentem users and fans which provides participants with time tracking tips and a chance to engage with the team. Search for "Momentem user group" on LinkedIn to join.

With the devastation in Japan just a few days behind us it is heartwarming to see companies step in to help. AT&T Wireless postpaid customers will not be charged for long distance or text messages to Japan from the US or Puerto Rico. Residential wired customers will be able to get up to 60 minutes free too but you will have to call in to be credited for them.

Angry Farm Gets Another Small Update to v1.1.4

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 05:45 AM PDT

9800-slingback 9800-explode

I have been playing Smarter Apps Angry Farm for almost 2 weeks now and while fun the game is riddled with more bugs than an unsavory bachelor pad. They made some nice improvements in version 1.1 but this v1.1.4 is supposed to add more of the same. Sadly I am still struggling to get past level 10 on the game but I finally found a good description of what each animal does:

  • Goat -  The goat is a hard headed animal and is used to crash through objects. The goat uses no special power ups when clicked it is the first line of attack against the invading pirate foxes.
  • Pig -  Pigs have curly tails and like to bounce. Use the pig in situations where they have to bounce around objects to get to the foxes.  They aren’t very powerful but are effective for getting around objects with their bounce without a click.
  • Chicken – The chicken lays eggs like any other chicken. However this chicken shoots out eggs as it fly’s through the air letting you break multiple things at once. Not as powerful as the cow but still very effective with most objects.
  • Cow – The cow is the heavy and super charged animal. When clicked the cow will have a burst of speed and smash through   everything. Theres not much that can stop a large super fast flying cow.

You can pick up Angry Farm 1.1.4 in the store for $4.99 at this link and get the upgrade if you already purchased it. Thanks Ricky for the tip!
