Sprint Will be the First Carrier to Integrate Google Voice Posted: 22 Mar 2011 02:37 AM PDT I have to commend Sprint on this one. While most carriers are afraid of Google Voice (or any change) Sprint seems to embrace it. They just announced that they will be launching an integrated Google Voice experience on their network. They will allow customers to set their existing Sprint wireless number as their Google Voice number. You will then be able to use Google voice without having to port your number which will be available to all Sprint CDMA phones. This means you will be able to use Google Voice for call routing, screening, blocking, recording, voicemail, and more. You can sign up to be notified when this feature is rolled out at this link though more details can be found in the press release. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

T-Mobile 3G BlackBerrys Will Need to be Replaced With AT&T Merger? Posted: 21 Mar 2011 01:55 PM PDT From what AT&T is saying now they plan on repurposing T-Mobile's AWS 1700Mhz 3G band for LTE services. From what I understand that means that T-Mobile 3G BlackBerry owners will have to change phones to keep their 3G connection. This is because current BlackBerrys do not have both T-Mobile and AT&T 3G bands enabled. From what I have heard from my RIM contacts the difference between a T-Mobile 9700 or 9780 and an AT&T one is simply a software change. Still it will be interesting to see how AT&T-Mobile handle this change. Will they simply tell users to upgrade to keep 3G? Will they just upgrade the firmware somehow? via Yahoo – Thx Corinne for the tip! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Charted Representation of Radiation Doses Exposure Posted: 21 Mar 2011 12:46 PM PDT One of our readers, Phoenix, let us know about a graphical representation created by Randall Munroe to chart out ionizing radiation doses from different sources. With all the talk and scare about radiation going around from cellphones to nuclear meltdown I found it gave me some perspective. Keep in mind the creator did put disclaimers about the accuracy. Still it is kind of interesting to see how cellphone radiation (which does not produce ionizing radiation) figures into the grand scheme of things. Check out the original chart here and sources here If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Sued Over Wi-Fi Patents Along with 16 Other Companies Posted: 21 Mar 2011 10:55 AM PDT A friend told me recently that it is impossible to design a cellphone or practically any mobile device without infringing on some companies or individuals patent. That was just proven correct again with Mosaid suing 17 companies over Wi-Fi patents including RIM. These companies are supposedly infringing on six patents used in Wi-Fi systems such as how it finds networks and the multiplexing technology that allows for the newer 802.11n speeds. Mosaid wants everybody to pay them for using their patents unlawfully and obviously wants to ban the sale of everything ever made with Wi-Fi in it. Something tells me this will lead to a whole new round of settlements. The odd part is that Mosaid actually makes hardware and devices unlike other patent trolls though it is focused on flash memory. Anybody for some patent reform? via Electronista If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Xobni for Gmail Plugin Beta for Chrome and Firefox Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:56 AM PDT I know quite a few Xobni users who have one problem with their pro service. It only works with Outlook. That has all changed over the weekend with Xobni announcing Xobni for Gmail. They have made it now possible to tie in Xobni with your Gmail and Google Apps account for free to find and manage your contacts. The plugin simply shows a sidebar in Gmail to help you find and search contacts just like you can currently do from Outlook.
So now that you can use your BlackBerry, Outlook, and Gmail does that make you hooked on Xobni? Have you tried the app/service out? Check it out at www.xobni.com and sign up for the Gmail beta at this link. Here is an idea of what it looks like. I am going to give it a spin and report back what I think! The Inevitable NFC Payments Battle Between Carriers and RIM Starts Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:54 AM PDT Carriers in the US have a history of killing any mobile payment technology. They did it first with SMS payments and then with carrier billing by charging upwards of 50% as a transaction fee. They have slowly seen the light on app stores since Apple took the market by storm and cut out the carriers from any profit. Still it took RIM over a year to finally force carriers to preload App World on BlackBerrys and RIM had to up their App World cut to 30% to cover the much higher carrier billing option they now offer. This war seems to be brewing again with NFC (Near Field Communication) payments with carriers and manufacturers on either side. For once RIM is trying to run around carriers by baking the NFC tech into the phone itself and cutting out the middle man. Carriers are not happy with this and are trying to bake the NFC tech into the SIM card. These battling views will really heat up in the next 6 months since NFC looks like it stands a real chance.
According to the WSJ, North American carriers have been telling RIM to stop trying to run around them. Canadian carriers are supposedly telling RIM "Guys, you won't be doing this." It will be kind of interesting to see which way RIM goes. They have usually bowed to every carrier demand even when it hurt RIM. For example, RIM allows carriers like AT&T to push out 25+ spamware preloaded icons on my BlackBerry every time I register. Its horrible for the user experience! The thing is that carriers control the mobile handset sales. If they don't like what RIM is doing they could simply not offer BlackBerrys with NFC. That would put RIM in a real pickle. I kind of understand carriers wanting to make the NFC chip mobile and easy to swap between phones. On the other hand I can see carriers killing this by once again wanting 30%+ fees on each transaction. What do you think? Thanks to everyone who sent this in! QNX Proved Wrong – First Article Mention in 1982! Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:01 AM PDT Last week we told you that Paul of QNX was doing some digging into the history of QNX back when it was called Quantum. He was hunting for the earliest mention of QNX in the news and what he found was an InfoWorld article from March 21, 1983 about QNX v1.0. He then said:
It looks like Paul will have to do some bowing to one of our readers Win Decker. He spotted an earlier article in InfoWorld mentioning Quantum Software Systems from October 11, 1982. The odd part is that they talk about the "unveiled multitasking, multiuser version of it QUNIX operating system." Does that mean QNX used to be called QUNIX or did they simply get the spelling wrong! Check out the InfoWorld article from 1982 at this link and kudos to Win Decker! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

BlackBerry Protect Beta Now Available in Europe, Middle East, and Africa Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:47 AM PDT The response from current BlackBerry Protect Beta users has been overwhelmingly positive. The only people I have seen say anything bad about it was for the lack of support for BES enabled devices or they are on a limited data plan. All in all I think RIM has a real hit on their hands to almost match with BBM as a must have app. Our buddies over at MiBlackBerry noticed that RIM has fixed one of the flaws in the BlackBerry Protect launch which was the limitation to certain countries. RIM has now extended the beta to users in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East which is nice! Just as a reminder BlackBerry Protect will backup your:
RIM has posted a great guide for getting you started on BlackBerry Protect and I highly recommend reading it. Head on over to the BlackBerry Protect website to get started. There are still some limits on the countries where it is available in App World and it requires OS 4.6+. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
