Have You Tried BlackBerry Protect? What Do You Think? Posted: 18 Mar 2011 10:58 AM PDT
The current BlackBerry Protect public beta is the culmination of a long project at RIM. I think it is a feature that RIM needed 5 years ago yet held out on doing since it slightly cannibalizes their enterprise business. As we have seen from the proliferation of BlackBerry backup (and even synchronization) apps users want help backing up their critical data from danger. I have spoken to many friends and readers about their trials with BlackBerry Protect and so far things have been pretty positive. I have heard some resentment about it not working on devices already connected to a BES but that looks like it may be fixed soon. The only other complaint I heard was that RIM has not made it available worldwide yet but for that I blame the idiots at RIM legal. So I thought I would simply ask all of you what you think of BlackBerry Protect? Give us a quick review in the comments on how you think it stacks up. Is it the best thing since sliced bread or is it a waste of memory. Let us know! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

RIM Hunting for Name & Numbering Manager for Products and Services Posted: 18 Mar 2011 09:02 AM PDT It was just last week when I pointed out that RIM is running out of model numbers in their current numbering scheme. Then @Cathystaylor pointed out that RIM is looking for a "Name & Numbering Manager" or a "Naming Architecture Manager." This persons responsibility will be to "Help generate and facilitate the naming of new BlackBerry product and services." Talk about a cool job! Whomever they choose probably needs to come up with 5-15 names a year max and he is golden. Check out the responsibilities for the job:
Always thinking how you could have come up with a better name that RIM for a device or service? Think even a monkey can come up with sequential model numbers? Check out the job listing today and apply to prove yourself right! I would apply but I am not sure I could survive the weather in Waterloo. If I could my first order of business would be naming all prototypes after characters from Greek mythology. Codename Zeus or Thor would be sweet! GetGlue for BlackBerry Comes Out of Beta Posted: 18 Mar 2011 08:01 AM PDT In case you don't know (I didn't last month) GetGlue is a social network for movies, tv shows, music, and books. It lets you check in and rate items and see what friends are into along with "getting stickers" that you can have delivered to you for different check-ins. I have yet to want to use any of these check-in apps but this one at least has a slick interface and beta users have good things to say about it. You can pick up the free GetGlue app in App World at this link. Tell us what you think of it! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

First Article About QNX From 1983? Try to Prove QNX Wrong! Posted: 18 Mar 2011 06:52 AM PDT Paul Leroux from QNX went on a hunt into the history of QNX this week on their blog. He was looking for the first magazine article about QNX and he thinks he found it. Back in 1983 InfoWorld wrote an article about QNX v1.0 which is almost 28 years ago. That was back when Windows 1.0 was still vaporware and Windows was released in 1985 just to give you perspective. QNX was actually called Quantum back them and the QNX OS v1.0 only ran on x86 machines and took up 96kb of memory. Paul points out a highlight from the article saying:
That puts the roots for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS and future BlackBerry smartphones to the dawn of consumer operating systems. Talk about some vision. Paul put out the challenge to see if you can come up with a QNX article from before 1983. It was initially released in 1982 so there is not that much time to look for. Let us know if you spot anything! If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:
