RIM Continues BlackBerry Messenger Flirting Lessons in Latest Videos Posted: 18 Mar 2011 01:33 AM PDT I am getting a real kick out of RIM's latest BlackBerry Messenger promotional videos. The latest ones provide advice and suggestions from 20-somethings on how to flirt using BBM. Its an interesting idea especially with RIM expanding BBM in an upcoming release with the new Social Platform API. The videos are a bit repetitious but each one has a few more scenes. Check out the videos below:

BlackBerry For Business Webcast Provides PlayBook, BES Hosted Service, and Other Details Posted: 17 Mar 2011 01:35 PM PDT Today, RIM hosted a new webcast, “BlackBerry for Business”. The highlights of this presentation were RIM’s upcoming cloud offerings and Playbook in the Enterprise. Cloud Services Highlights: As you well know, RIM currently offers most of its services via “cloud”. They are transferring around 15 Petabytes of data monthly. They have mentioned three services today. 1. BlackBerry Protect RIM recently went to public beta with their BlackBerry Protect product in North and South America. It is a great product that enables you to remotely backup your data, locate your device and wipe. Today, RIM announced the beta will be extended to Europe, Middle East and Asia very soon. The BP public beta exceeded their expectations. With this product they are targeting individuals and small business owners. 2. BlackBerry Management Center This is a new product that is targeted for SMEs who host their emails with ISPs, Google, Yahoo and such and want to manage their BlackBerry devices from a central location. This product will have features such as device lock, remote wipe, etc. The time frame was given as “later this year”. 3. BlackBerry Enterprise Service This is another new offering from RIM. It will have feature set similar to BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express. It is a hosted BES solution, directly hosted by RIM. The basic offering will be for FREE (or as they called it in the presentation $0.). As a part of recent agreement with Microsoft, RIM will be offering this service to the upcoming Office365 customers. Also Microsoft is changing the pricing of BES service for current Business Productivity Online Service (BPOS) customers to $0 as well. RIM is getting more attractive to end users who can use ActiveSync freely on other platforms with this BlackBerry Enterprise Service offerings. We are expecting more partnerships with other providers to offer it to wider reach of customers. It will offer all the latest and greatest BES offers, including upcoming BlackBerry balance. The service will go into closed beta in the next few months, then to open beta and a general release in late 2011. Playbook Highlights: After talking about the cloud offerings, the presentation moved onto the upcoming Playbook. There really isn’t anything new on this front, it is pretty much reiteration what they had shown in earlier presentations: The first release of Playbook (Wifi only) will bring Personal, Bridge and VPN modes of connection. Interestingly, we were told Balance mode will be supported even on the wifi model very shortly after release: When the models with mobile data connection, such as 3G, 4G, LTE, etc released, RIM will start supporting more features/capabilities, such as provisioning and IT policies. We have asked several questions that you are probably dying to know. First one was of course the release date. We got answer of “very soon” with a laughter. I don’t know if they were being sarcastic or rumors of March 27 still hold. Our bet is on April release. Also questions about release dates of other Playbook models went with “no comment”. On a good note to enterprise admins, you will be able to get an IT policy update (without the need of a new MR or SP release) and allow/disallow BlackBerry bridge mode. This is a good news for security concerned admins. As the release date coming near, we will continue to monitor what is going on with Playbook release. Hopefully RIM will not make us wait too much longer. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Find Slick Wallpapers For Your BlackBerry Posted: 17 Mar 2011 01:05 PM PDT With many themes, they come with a stock wallpaper, that goes best with the design of the theme. Personally, I like to change my wallpaper every few days to keep my homescreen fresh. One of my favorite sites for doing this is imageboard scraper. The imageboard scraper takes the images off many image boards and compiles them into a nice webpage that is search-able and customizable. The unique thing is, it is ever changing as the image boards get new images. They are not put into categorized, but there are plenty to choose from.
There is a nice search tool at the top that enables a keyword search for all the images it has scraped, and also lets the user choose how far back you want to search(time period). The site also has a filter for NSFW(Not Safe for Work) which enables safe browsing. The Raw list lets you set how many you want to display per page. It also lets you determine your own sorting method, so once you familiarize yourself with the site, searching becomes faster and more efficient. One thing you will have to keep in mind while browsing these images, is that there is no next or previous page link, but the box beside the Raw List entry box is a page # entry spot, so you can choose yourself which page you would like to browse. All of the wallpapers posted are desktop wallpaper quality, so the quality will always be the best it can on a BlackBerry or other devices. I hope everyone enjoys! Dislaimer: you should clear your browser cache and cookies before opening this site on mobile, and then once it loads, change the Raw List to 10, this will only display 10 images per page and you will not get the Page is too big error in the webkit browser. A few of my favorites: If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

Shrinking your BlackBerry OS 6 with BB Boss Posted: 17 Mar 2011 11:04 AM PDT I have been using BB Boss since its release by the BDHP team to help with the shrinking of OS6 for more free memory on my 9700. It is a wonderful tool that keeps getting updates making it better and better as an all in one PC app for BlackBerry's. Before we continue with BB Boss let me throw in a DISCLAIMER, if you are not comfortable removing OS Files, and even maybe bricking your BlackBerry (if you shrink or delete the wrong stuff) please use the app with caution. BB Boss allows the user to Shrink the OS to a reasonable size, removing all bloat like fonts, languages, applications and more. They have added Hybrid installation, File system, and also the ability to help create OTA downloads in the JAD/ALX creation. For today, we will just stick with OS Shrinking. As you can see from the image above that BB Boss lets you really customize what files will be installed when upgrading your OS or just even freeing up space.
I personally shrink out everything except for BBM and Memo Pad in the normal menus. I have been able to get my install files down to 36.3MB Pre Install. I am using BB Boss 1.1 right now because i do not use the other features. From the image you can see that my starting folder size was 146MB and I was able to remove 109.6MB of unwanted install files. Also note, that what you shrink out will not directly add to that many MB in file free, but when i load my 9700 for the first time with no apps, I have 110MB File Free and after all my apps are installed I am down to 95MB. Everyone will want to shrink out different things, and I would stay away from the 'Advanced' section, until you read up on what those functions do. We can start by downloading BB Boss (Download links will be posted at the bottom of the article) and install which one you wish to use, as I stated above, I use 1.1 as it has all the features I need for now. Second you will want to uninstall all unneeded OS's for your device off of your computer, and make sure the one you want to use is install. Run BB Boss, and at the top you will see that it lets you select which OS you are wishing to work on, and from there you can start removing things that you will not want to use. You will see that I take out the default ringtones as well, I use MP3's as my ringtones or custom tones saved on my media card and don’t need them. From here, click carefully before you shrink, unlike the OS5 tool Shrink a OS, BB Boss does not(not at least in 1.1) save the deleted CODs for future addition and you will need to re install the OS on your computer to restore the deleted CODs. Once you have your selected items, click Auto Add/Remove and after 30 seconds it will tell you how much you have shrank out. This will be the button 'OS on Disk' in Version 2.2.2. The Next step is determined by what you're looking to do. If you are upgrading your OS, you can continue by clicking File and Launch AppLoader, this will launch RIMs AppLoader.exe and continue through the upgrade process. If you are looking to shrink out the OS that is on your phone (only do able in version 2.2.2) click Direct Shrink on phone, and follow the prompts. With version 2.2.2 you can really play around and have fun with shrinking, as you can directly modify the OS on the phone, and it eliminates having to Wipe and Reload the OS if you want to shrink it, as has had to be done in the past. As mentioned above, please be cautious with your removal of items in the 'Advanced' section and have fun! DOWNLOAD LINKS – Windows only You will also need the Desktop Manager USB drivers installed to complete these operations. If you liked this article, you might find these interesting:

PingChat Updated to v2.4 With Emoticons and More Posted: 17 Mar 2011 07:55 AM PDT I am not sure if many of you remember PingChat but it is one of the few cross platform IM clients out there. Terrence let us know they have updated to v2.4 this week which adds quite a list of new features and fixes to the platform. I am not that well versed in all of these alternatives but I tried PingChat for a bit and it worked well. The thing I have with most of these apps is that they do not have a real differentiator. Here are the updates in v2.4 of PingChat:
You can pick up the updated v2.4 of PingChat in App World at this link if you have a compatible device. Alternatively if you just want to find a random BBM hookup check out the reviews for PingChat featuring amazing reviews like:

Video: PlayBook Run-Through Featuring Elmo! Posted: 17 Mar 2011 07:00 AM PDT This video is a few days old now but I know how ravenous I am about all things PlayBook. I also know there are a lot of you guys out there that foam at the mouth at the mere thought of fresh, juicy PlayBook footage…too much? I think not. I really enjoyed this run-through as it is similar to what I imagine/dream about every night when thinking about my first moments with a PlayBook. It is also refreshing to see a demo by someone other than a RIM employee/demonstrator. No agenda or specific things to highlight. Just simply checking out what the PlayBook can do. Other highlights for me are when he is looking for the 'pause button' on Need For Speed, and when Elmo gets a note! Check out the video and let us know your favorite parts! Dear QNX, Please Send Me One of These BlackBerry PlayBooks (video) Posted: 17 Mar 2011 05:53 AM PDT Long time reader Jordan sent us a link to a CTV Ottawa video where CTV takes a look behind the scenes at QNX. I have been waiting for a news site to finally do this and while I was watching the video one thing kept going through my head. These luck duck engineers have 6+ BlackBerry PlayBooks sitting on their desks! Can't they easily ship one my way? I am very envious of my RIM friends who get to take these devices home with them every day and get almost daily OS updates.
You can check out the CTV Ottawa video from your desktop at this link which also has a transcript of the cheesy voice over audio used in the video. Feel free to join with me in disgust at the waste of 6 PlayBooks on one engineer. They even get to ride around in Corvettes and Audis powered by QNX not to mention gamble at work!
